"if at first you don't succeed, try, try again"

fantastic start! i'm nerdy, and i keep a craft journal, and the first few things that i made, well, not the greatest! this is what i do: draw a picture of what i want the final product to look like, then draft a pattern to make it work, follow my hand written pattern EXACTLY, then take a picture of the actual finished product. from there i will write in revisions if neccessary, and i photograph the "improved" versions as well. all of this, i keep in my craft journal.

its a great way to keep track of my sewing skills, especially when i learn a new technique - and when i'm bored, i'll flip through my older stuff, and apply my new skills to make a better version of it. i strongly suggest that you pick up a nice blank journal and start your own, because clearly you're on a great crafty path, and you'll enjoy documenting your own journey  Cheesy

Great job on the bag!  Looks great.

I've been wanting to experiment with vinyl, but I was wondering do you fold it over to hide raw edges like you would fabric? Also what kind of needle do you use?

I really love your bag!

thanks for your compliments! here are my answers for your questions:
+ you don't HAVE to fold over the raw edges, that's just personal preference there. vinyl doesn't fray, so it really is up to you!
+ some say to use a brand new leather needle, and heavy duty thread. though personally, i use my same old size 14 (i think it's 14?) all purpose needle and my normal threads. and honestly, i only change needles when i manage to bend one. everything i make is just as sturdy as the next, i've never experienced a product problem due to poor sewing that could be traced back to a needle or thread issue. my old faithful normal needle and thread work great for me, so i stick with it  Cheesy
+ get a teflon foot! unless you have a heavy duty/industrial machine, you're going to need a teflon foot to sew on the top of the vinyl. sewing the knit underside is just like sewing any other knit, but if you don't use a teflon foot when sewing the top side, the vinyl is going to accidentally get stretched as you stitch - because the metal foot grabs the vinyl, instead of gliding over it.

good luck!

Wow, that is a perfect bag! I like how it is on the bottom, definetly makes it look professional. I would of never known it was homemade.
April

thanks april! the bottom WAS a bit tricky, but i'm very pleased with the result too! Grin
