1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Simple men's sock pattern? on: December 22, 2007 06:32:17 PM
I got it in my head to knit my man a pair of socks for his birthday.
I'm looking for something very simple in design. I'd like to avoid chunky boot socks.

3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / shirred top! on: April 28, 2006 08:49:27 PM
I love tops like this but I never knew how to make them until I saw this tutorial. I made a few modifications, tho: I waited to sew the short ends together until after I had finished the shirring, this way I didn't have to worry about tying the elastic ends together.
The straps are a bit wonky since apparently it's hard to mark where they should go while you're wearing it. Overall, I'm pretty pleased. The best part is that it's totally forgiving and no one will be  able to tell that you've probably gained 5 pounds in the past week because it's finals and therefore you have horrible eating habits.
ignore the bedhead.

6  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / how to: jazz up your kitchen cabinets & still get your secrurity deposit back on: February 05, 2006 08:06:03 PM
About a month ago, I found some poor sucker to take over my lease at a "luxury student living complex" and moved into an apartment I can actually afford. The rent is half the price of the other place (for the same square footage), but the building is a little "dated" (euphamism for ugly). One night I was lying in bed wide awake listening to my then-boyfriend snore and contemplating my horrendous kitchen cabinets. I had considered contact paper, but my mother warned that it would leave the cabinets a sticky mess. I considered covering them with fabric but figured it would just make them uglier. And then! A stroke of genius. My cabinets would be cute, and I'd still get my security deposit back!
Here's what I did:
I measured the length and width of each door, plus 4 inches as an allowance for securing them on the inside of the door.
They are secured with some 3M Velcro-like strips, like so:
At first I was going to use 3M picture hanging strips, but I was going to end up spending a fortune. Then I found the velcro strips. Two 4"x1" inch strips per pack; I cut them to size to fit the width of the ribbon.
The total cost of the project was $10  ($5 for many yards of ribbon, $5 for 2 packs of the velcro strips) and about an hour of my time.
The velcro attatched to the cabinets should come off pretty cleanly when I move out, and if not, it's on the inside of the cabinet so it shouldn't matter.
I kind of wish I had stuck to just the striped ribbon and one solid color, but overall I'm pretty pleased with the result. And I don't notice the ugliness so much.
7  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: how di you guys get into knitting? how did you learn? im havin trouble on: December 05, 2005 11:44:12 AM
i took a class offered at my university. it was an informal class that met once a week for 4 weeks. best $25 i've ever spent. even learning from a real live person is frustrating at first. don't give up! once you get the hang out it, you'll be golden.
8  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / cuddlecore: recon hoodie with pink fleece-y hearts on: October 13, 2005 12:07:22 PM
this is the first time i've ever really attempted to reconstruct anything, so i was pleased with how this turned out, even though i didn't do anything major to it.

i started out with this gray zip-up hoodie from express, which i bought in 8th(!!!) grade. i'm now a junior in college, so you do the math. i really don't think there is anything better than a well-worn in hoodie, but i lost my desire to wear anything with a brand plastered across it a long time ago. also, the hoodie was a little big for my liking.
so, i ripped open the side seams and removed the sleeves. i took in the sides and sleeves so that they fit tighter. then i added little pink heart appliques from fleece to cover up the express logo on the right chest and to the back just to make it cute. this was the first time i did appliques and they didn't turn out as "neat" as i would like, but i think they still look pretty good.
here are the results:

the zipper pull broke off a long time ago, so i've been using a safetypin. which is really ghetto. is there anyway to fix this short of replacing the whole zipper?
9  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / wee baby booties on: July 16, 2005 03:45:18 PM
my first non-scarf project!

made for my friend's new baby, davan. i know i'm pushing it with the baby booties in july, but they are 0-3 months (and look a little on the large size, in my opinion) and she lives in northern california.
