32  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Crafting for Chimpanzees! on: March 01, 2007 11:31:43 AM
Hi all,

I caught a documentary on Chimpanzees on PBS a while back, http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/chimpanzees/

I was on the website of one of the organizations the show mentioned, www.savethechimps.org.  They mention the need for crafty stuff on their website and I thought of Craftster.  Grin

Specifically, the chimps that the rescue cares for in New Mexico (who are waiting to be moved to the Sanctuary they are building onto in Florida), need some pretties to look at.

Make decorations. The chimps in New Mexico don't have much of a view, so we hang decorations outside their cages to brighten up their home. We have volunteers who make wall hangings, wind chimes, and other decorations that we use. If you are artistic or creative and would like to make decorations for the chimps, please send them to our site in New Mexico where they will be hung up for the chimps to enjoy!

They also ask for non-toxic paints & supplies, books, magazines, stuffed toys, and other items that crafty folks might have on their wish list:

Just wanted to pass along this.  Smiley

36  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: My granny's 80th birthday... Very stuck on ideas! on: February 15, 2007 01:36:42 PM
I usually make things for grandparents' gifts. Here are some I've done in the past:

Took a photo of her & her family (husband and kids) and did a drawing of it, matted and framed it (the drawing wasn't great, but she liked it anyway!)

Cross-stitched a pretty design on an afghan

Made a lap quilt

Embroidered a pair of pillowcases

Decoupaged picture frames

Did a painting of flowers

I think when I was younger, I made some wreaths and baskets.  Have probably also made some jewelry...

Items I bought:
Native American pottery
Pretty flowery wreath
Flowers (can't go wrong!)
Massaging pillow (if you have something like Sharper Image or Brookstone, they have great stuff for people who are hard to shop for!)
Corn pillow that you microwave to warm up

38  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: Why are you Vegetarian/Vegan? on: February 08, 2007 10:09:46 AM
Meat is gross.

Animals shouldn't die. They rock more than people, because as a species we kind of suck.

Couldn't have said it better myself, that's how I feel, too. Smiley

I've been ovo-lacto since I was 15 (almost 15 yrs).  I tried being veg a year earlier, but fell off the wagon. Then this environmental group came to my school and did a talk - included in their talk was the environmental and ethical aspects of vegetarianism. I think they showed a couple videos. That was it for me. Once I made the decision for keeps, I knew it was the only thing that really ever made sense to me.  Smiley

I would like to go vegan some day, and am sorta working my way there (I only buy soy milk and rarely buy cheese).
39  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: I need some MAJOR advice; Vegetarianism on the GO on: February 08, 2007 09:10:42 AM
Hi, I'm new around here, but have been a vegetarian for 15 yrs.  Smiley

In the morning I usually have an English Muffin with a soy sausage patty sandwiched in it.  If I'm out of soy sausage, I spread some peanut butter on it for a little protein.  You could also add a piece of fruit and a glass of milk or soy milk to make it a more nutritious meal.

For lunch, sanwiches or frozen meals are easy.

For dinner, a lot of times what I do is make a big batch of something and portion it out into tupperware for the week.  Then you can just toss it in the microwave, make a simple salad and dinner is done.

For snacks a lot of time I will just toss a veggie patty in the microwave.  High in protein and quite filling. Or marinate and bake some tofu to have on hand.  Some portable snacks: granola/granola bars, fruit, nuts, Ensure.
40  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / Re: present for tree hugger boyfriend? on: February 05, 2007 09:18:38 AM
Hi, I'm new here so please 'scuse me if this is dumb  Undecided , but I'm something of a treehugger myself, so I felt the need to chime in...

What about giving him an actual tree?  Like a small-ish one that you could plant together, maybe make a day of it. You could give it to him in a pretty pot that you decorate or something.
