1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Wedding Gift Overthink- Help me! on: July 15, 2013 06:10:34 PM
My coworker/work buddy invited myself and my spouse to her wedding in September. It's a smaller wedding so I was surprised, but very happy to be invited. My first thought was to crochet her a throw blanket as a gift. However, I'm wondering if that's too much. We've known each other for about 8 months and have only hung out outside of work once, but we really click. I'm no pro at crochet, so it's a big time commitment, plus I make 75% of my Christmas gifts (I've finished 2), blah blah blah.

Do you think a crocheted blanket is too over the top for the situation? If so, what's something else that I could make and gift them?

2  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Scarves, hat, neck warmers - 7 Christmas Gifts Done So Far on: August 29, 2012 09:07:52 AM
I've been making Christmas gifts since June, I've got 7 finished so far. The photos aren't great, but I think they're clear enough.

Note: I've technically been crocheting for 10 years, but I got all mixed up when I was taught by my right handed Aunt (I'm left handed) and while my stitches didn't look right I just kept going. It still made stuff and didn't look awful. Then I stopped for awhile. I finally found a video on youtube that made it impossibly clear to me why my crocheted stitches didn't look like crocheted stitches. So, ten years later I've finally got the single crochet down.

Navy blue and gray scarf for my brother-in-law's fiancee.

Gryffindor color scarf for my brother-in-law. I made him a red scarf 3 years ago for Christmas, but I ran out of yarn, so it was a bit short. I promised him I'd make him a proper one someday. Muahaha...

Brown 100% wool scarf for my Dad. It's lion brand fisherman's wool. He and I both really like wool. My Dad is a mail man and is very outdoorsy, so I always make him something warm, but I think this is my best yet.

Teal hat made with Stitch Nation yarn. This one's for my brother's (Twin B) girlfriend, whom he lives with. I made her some rice bags last year (first Christmas we knew her).

Ice blue, navy blue, and magenta/red scarf for Twin A's girlfriend. This is the first Christmas since we've known her. My brother says she likes all colors and I liked this combination.

Neck warmer for my Dad's wife. I made her a flannel scarf last year. Close ups of buttons, because I love them!

Neck warmer for my brother(Twin B) with close up of button. I made him a chestnut/dark orange one last year, so he requested another one for this year in another earth tone.

Me! I made a blue double wrapped cowl neck warmer for myself with Merino Wool Blend yarn. I love how it came out. Muahaha...

Thanks for looking!
3  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Painted Sunglasses Photoshoot! on: August 11, 2010 06:17:44 PM
I have not posted in SO LONG. I did a few series of photos just for fun and my blog, so here they are! These are some of my favorites and I can't wait to do more! Muahaha!

EDIT: I should probably mention that the model (my friend Andrew) and I painted all of the sunglasses. It was great fun going to 5below, buying a ton of sunglasses and then buying paints and just sitting on the floor painting away.

4  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / 10 y.o. boy with a past...what do I make for him for xmas? please halp. on: December 11, 2009 07:24:37 PM
I'm doing a mostly handmade Christmas and I am stumped on ONE person. My fiance's brother's wife's son...I think he is 10. He is a trouble maker, show off, a bit of a little thief, and he gets yelled at alot and his biological father is recently out of the picture. I want to make him something, but I don't know what. Last yea I got by with making a drawstring bag with candy and a little book of The Night before Christmas. Despite the fact that he is a brat he seems to like me, so I want to cultivate a reason to respect others thing here.

I don't know what his interests are, but is there any slightly generic gift that would be good for a boy like this? His older sister is getting either earrings or a t-shirt scarf. HALP!

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / The Crafting of a Harry Potter Wedding - PICTURE HUGE! on: November 03, 2009 10:49:04 AM
Well! I've been married since June 5th, so it's high time I post photos, especially since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows just came out and I've seen it twice including the midnight opening and I want to see it MOAR!!!  Grin Grin Grin

Also, sorry if the pics are huge.

We bought a ton of mismatched lanterns for the tables and made parchment cards with names of locations in the world of Harry Potter

I found a ton of vintage keys and tied velvet ribbon on each using colors from the Hogwarts houses for fast, but awesome boutennieres

Mike folded these origami flowers as well as hundreds of lucky stars. The flowers were made from pages of Harry Potter and the stars were house colors again

We found photoshop brushes of banners to make placecards and for whatever reason I went crazy and wrote them all by hand. Ouch.

I made all of our bouquets using Kangaroo Paw, Blue Thistle, orange spray roses, red and pink yarrow,

Cupcakes! I made two dozen cupcakes and several other people brought them as well. We had so many cupcakes!!!

Our handfasting cords. The green one belongs to Mike's parents and the red/gold one is ours. I bought the cord and added shells and other trinkets to it.

I don't think I've ever seen a guestbook at a married friend's house. It just takes up space somewhere, so we designed a poster for guests to sign that we'll frame and hang when we get a place to live Cheesy

My friend/bridesmaid(not shown) made these feathery hair clips the night before the wedding. Anxiety!

We designed and printed out all of our programs. You can't see it here, but I punched a hole at the top of each one and tied a piece of gold or purple ribbon.

We lost many people the year before we got engaged. Mike's dad passed away suddenly in the fall. My grandmother passed away on Valentine's Day. Mike's grandmother then passed away before Easter. My other grandmother has advanced alzheimers and is in a home. Amongst other losses from several years ago. So! We set up a small shrine to these relatives, to have a place for them.

I made all of our bouquets using Kangaroo Paw, pink and red yarrow, blue thistle, orange spray roses, wheat,

Our little lanterns girls and boy carried tiny lanterns we got at Target and we wrapped the handles in ribbon

Instead of slaving over favors we had a little fun and filled all kinds of jars with jelly belly jelly beans: Bertie Botts style! I stamped lots of little paper bags for people to fill up Cheesy We also had a bunch of jelly candies from Lindt and Lindt truffles I bought for half price!

I made all the jewelry for the bridesmaids, me(not pictured), lantern girls, etc...The first two earrings had no hooks when I took the pics...

9  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Yarn for Manly Scarves and a Hat. Halp!!! on: November 07, 2008 09:11:33 AM
I have been crocheting for a couple years, still suck at it, but good enough to make loved christmas gifts.

I am making some "manly" scarves this year. One for my boyfriend, one for my dad and one for each of my two brothers. Plus a manly crocheted hat for the bf's brother.

My question is this: What kind of yarn would you use for a "manly scarf"? I was thinking of using homespun, because I like the colors and how they aren't all solid and it's easy to work with, but I want to do a wool scarf for my dad cause well, he likes wool alot. Then my boyfriend and my brothers like soft scarves. They're very picky about how things Feel. So I need nice soft, manly scarves.

So any suggestions on what kinds of yarn you think are good for the Men in my life?
