1  The vomit-inducingly cute Strawberry Shortcake, Cherries and Flowers quilt... in Quilting: Completed Projects by Michela on: September 06, 2011 12:31:54 PM
...AKA the grown up blankie AKA my first quilt.

So I have finished my 20+ years of education (seriously, I counted.) and I have no job. So what's a girl to do in between job hunting? Take up quilting of course!

So here it is, the pinkest, cutest, most diabetic-coma inducing quilt ever to be made and not given to a small child. I'm not even going to pretend this is for my niece because even at 7 years old, even she's too cool for this quilt.

It's nothing fancy, but given the fact that the most complicated thingI had made before his was a blue jean apron, I am rather proud of myself.

The quilt is made of 10"x10" squares of 4 prints from my modest stash that I thought matched well enough arranged in a 6x6 pattern. It ended up being about 56"x56" after being assembled. My favourite squares are retro Strawberry Shortcake ones, though the cherries are very, very cute too.

Here you can see a glimpse of the backing (cotton flannel. Soooo soft!) and the binding; I cheated a little and used satin blanket binding resulting in a quilt that resembles a giant blankie but who cares, its soooooo snuggly! I tied it using cotton embroidery thread in the centre of each square and in each patchwork corner, so its nice and lofty. It's the perfect nap blanket for grown ups.

Sucky phone shot of the top just to give you an idea of the size.

Since I am a sucker for progress shots, here's the back side of the top just before I put all the pieces together. Since this is no way I could fit the quilt in my machine and there is no way on earth I was going to spent several days of my life quilting this by hand. I ironed down some heavy duty interfacing on the corners and stuck some heat 'n bond under the seams to keep them smooth after washing. Probably a little bit of overkill, but I liked the resulting super tidy seams.

6  31 flavours? How about 31 earrings! One for everyday of the month (IMAGE OBESE!) in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Michela on: July 30, 2010 02:19:20 PM
So I've been a little stressed lately. I haven't had a day off to recharge my mental batteries in more than 3 weeks, I'm getting ready to move away for post-grad in a massively stressful program and my grampa passed away last month. So to help cope, I got it stuck in my head to make a pair of earrings for every day of the month. So during my precious afternoon off last week I went to some bead stores (I love living in Toronto, 6 bead stores within 3 blocks) to get some supplies and sent to work. It took 4 days, more than 100 head pins and 62 earring wires but I did it. I made 31 one pairs of earrings. I've been waiting for some decent light to get pictures.

1 to 3: Teal faux pearl drops, volano quartz with various semi-precious beads (jasper, quartz, goldstone, jade), pink and yellow crystals in brass pendants

4 to 6: dyed quartz drops, pink and green howlite with turquois and flower, blue pink and green glass drops, dyed quartz and swarovski crystal drops

7 to 9: brushed pwerter charms on loop, white bows, snowflake charms

10 to 12: swarovski on 18k gold plated chain, fuzzy hearts with love charm, studio 54 inspired gold circles

13 to 15: heart shaped locks with keys (one of my faves!), eiffel tower with volcano quartz, apple charms

16 to 18: dyed quartz drops, copper chandielers with crystal, brass bird charms (another fave)

19 to 21: handmade yellow glass with silver and gold chain, chandilers with blue crystals, desert jasper on brass

22 to24: blue glass with feather charms, red foiled beads with love charm, faux pearl drop with copper caps

25 to 26: blue shells and jade with key charm, volcano quartz with brass

27 to 29: brushed silver leaf motif pendants, knitting charms with swarovski crystals, brass butterfly charms

30 to 31: My total fave, black bows with faux turquois and heart shaped lock charm, faux pearl with silver cap

Here is the whole lot. It really is a smack load of earrings. But now I have it stuck in my head to make 52, one for every week of the ear. How awesome would that be? Holiday earrings! Seasonal themes!

7  Re: Make me a Hat round 2. Sendouts Aug 16 in The Swap Gallery by Michela on: July 30, 2010 07:55:03 AM
I got my hat from Mamatomany days ago, however life and prevented me from getting a decent photo (I haven't had a day off in 3 weeks and I look like it. It's tres charming.) I manged to get a somewhat decent picture last night, but sadly I can't capture the nuiances of this hat on camera.

It's cloche style, one of my faves, and has subtle little eyelets all over. They yarn is lovely and sheepy (not too soft, so it actually stays on my baby smooth hair and still smells like lanolin, but not a barn.) It feels like its going to be the perfect fall hat; it's not to warm and won't give me hat hair!

I recived from crazy4bags today and my paackage is full of awesomness! Smiley

Heres the whole lot. She spoiled me a wee bit with all the extras. In addtion to the crafted stuff she sent 2 package of cupcake liners, 5 erasers (4 of which are scented), a dayplanner, a magnet, a stamp, a notebook and a rhinestone iron-on

Now for the crafted stuff:

She made me a set of 4 really cute cards. My fave is the purple one, I kinda want to frame it and put it on my wall.A cupcake pendant which is actually going to live on my keychain, bumblebee cupcake earrings (*squee!*) because I have a slight obsession with bees. It's a long story....., a cupcake pin cushion and a sweet little bag.

Thanks Dawn! I love everything!
