1  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Spyro the dragon! :D on: November 01, 2013 05:44:35 PM
This year, my daughter wanted to be Spyro the dragon from the Skylanders game. I was just going to buy her costume but I waited til Tuesday to go buy it and the store had none. I didn't want to disappoint her so I went home and ordered a purple wig with one day shipping and started planning. Wednesday night, I went to Walmart and bought 2 fleece throws and 3 yards of tulle and got to work with my sewing machine and glue gun. The wig arrived just in time on Halloween afternoon so it miraculously all got finished!

What's that? by Kimbosauruss, on Flickr
The wings were made with an orange fleece blanket, two wire hangers, and some craft foam all hot glued together.

The tail was attached with an elastic band around her waist. The tutu tied on with the opening left for the tail.

The horns were fleece and sewed into the wig.

The top was just a tube with a yellow strip hot glued to the front. The wings attached with elastic to the front of the top and the base glued to the back.

She was extremely happy with her costume and made sure to tell everyone at every house we stopped at to look at her tail. The tail and wings bounced around with every step. I tried to get a video but it was too dark Sad

Thanks for looking! Cheesy

2  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Coraline and the Other Mother on: November 01, 2012 01:47:10 PM
This year my husband couldn't get off of work for trick or treating so I had to think of a mother/daughter costume. What's better than Coraline and the Other Mother?

Cutie Pie by Kimbosauruss, on Flickr
I bought an adult sized raincoat at a thrift store and took it apart to make it her size. I couldn't find plain yellow rain boots anywhere for her so these are Spongebob rain boots that I painted to cover up the Spongebobiness.

I crocheted a Coraline doll for her and made them matching pipe cleaner dragonfly hair clips. I bought a big copper key at Michael's, painted it black, and used Crayola model magic to make the top of it a button.

For my Other Mother costume I bought a black skirt and long black sleeved shirt at a thrift store and shortened the sleeves, added the collar, and added a bustle. I painted on all the polka dots by hand. Turns out the dress in the movie is diamond patterned and not polka dots. Whoops!

There's a back view of my bustle squished from the car ride to our trick or treating location.

The buttons were stuck on with rolled up scotch tape after I failed at using spirit gum. The red choker is just a piece of red ribbon.

My shoes were painted red and our wigs are from eBay.

3  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Faun/Satyr Family on: November 07, 2011 03:33:31 PM
here's a photo of us at the Texas renaissance festival

renfest satyr family by Kimbosauruss, on Flickr

This year I decided my husband just HAD to be a satyr/faun. For once he actually agreed to wear a costume I made, I figured I might as well take advantage and do a family theme costume like I've been wanting. I looked at DOZENS of different tutorials, but for the most part went with http://youtu.be/vRMIo-lPp_8 for the way to do the padding. I tore apart shorts we all had for the top of the legs and for the bottom, I added two inches around the tracing of our legs with padding.

My husband and I had a party the Saturday before Halloween and it was too cold for me to wear the corset I customized. He's braver than I am obviously  Roll Eyes
My crayola model magic hooves didn't make it through the night so next day I had to redo mine and start my daughter's costume. I have a procrastination problem obviously. This time I made our hooves out of polymer clay like my husband's.

No hooves by Kimbosauruss, on Flickr
Unfortunately, she lost her hooves as soon as we stepped out of the car. On top of that, my husband's broke off at the last house we trick or treated at.
So I redid all the hooves this time out of paper mache and added the tail to my daughter's costume hoping to take better pictures at renfest, but those plans got cancelled on me. So you get pictures of the baby satyr in the living room!

And a side view to see her tail.

Mine and my daughter's shirts are store bought and her horns are from renfest. Everything else I made. Hopefully, I can update with pictures with my leafy corset and the new, less wonky horns I made for my husband.
Thanks for looking  Cheesy
4  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Pillows from highschool! Pic Fluffy on: September 11, 2009 12:55:27 PM
I made these almost 4 years ago in my Textile & Apparel Production class.
This is the first project we did in the class to practice applique.

It's made of craft felt and it's all pill-y now Sad
Next is a flamingo drawn on in puff paints. It has a really cool texture to it so it looks feathery IRL.

The back of the flamingo pillow is the first try of screenprinting in class.

This next one is my favorite. The moon, curly hill, Jack and Sally are screenprinted on. The blue was painted on (it used to be glittery too) and the lettering is stenciled.

And last is the pillow project from my Apparel class that almost made me fail. The fabric I chose was silky and frayed all over the place. Plus I had my best friend in class so our lollygagging made us finish our pillows the last week of the class.
5  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / Three dolls and a blanket! on: September 11, 2009 12:22:05 PM
This is my latest doll inspired by this post

Next is a doll made to look like one of my best friends Ashley when she was pregnant.

The belly is removable  Cheesy
This is supposed to be me.

I've been too lazy to add clothes  Embarrassed

And last but not least, the blanket I made for my daughter.

It's a darker purple but that yarn never photographs right.
6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Sealing in swarvoski crystals on: September 10, 2009 05:12:13 PM
I just bought this necklace and the crystals keep falling off Sad

Two fell off in the mail and I glued them back on, but then I wore it today and a different stone fell off. I can't glue it back on since I don't have it.

So I was wondering if there's a way to seal the crystals in that wont make it less shiny or anything or if I should just invest in some crystals and be ready to glue them on. It's made of Lucite if that helps with giving me ideas.
I've never messed with any kind of jewelry before and don't want to mess up this $150 necklace so feel free to tell me if this is too big a project for beginners  Wink
7  COOKING / Dessert / Yoshi cake! (pic heavy) on: March 22, 2009 10:22:03 AM
This was made for a friend of mine. We have a little bit of a joke between us with Yoshi   Cheesy

mushroom cupcakes

...and a picture of my first attempt at a 3D cake. I had my friends help with this but we're so ashamed of it. We didn't have enough fondant and had no time to get more and ended up only having maybe an hour and a half to build and decorate. It's supposed to be my brother-in-law's undead rogue on World of Warcraft  Undecided

we liked the cupcakes though  Smiley They have zombie finger cookies in them. His theme was supposed to be zombies
8  COOKING / Dessert / World of Warcraft cakes on: March 06, 2009 09:30:21 AM
my husband and all his friends play WoW, so for 2 of their birthdays i made warcraft cakes. These are the first decorated cakes i've ever made so please be gentle.  Smiley

Horde symbol cake for my husband.

I tried to use one of those cheeze whiz lookin frosting things with the decorating tips....it was horrible. I ended up having to use a toothpick to smooth the red frosting around. I used a ziploc to do the black frosting.

I also made him the WoW icon cupcakes.

and of course some hearthstones  Cheesy

For one of our friends, I made him a rogue cake....I didn't know he now prefers to play his paladin Sad

Thanks for looking!
