1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / SWS question on: January 31, 2008 08:45:56 PM
sooooo I made my mommy a Danica scarf out of paton's sws.
took my 5 days of class knitting and skipping out on smoking breaks.
it's done, pretty, and itchy.

what do you suggest for softening it?

honestly, i usually knit for dirty hipsters, so blocking and weaving in ends is something they don't want (they want it to look hand knit, maaaaan (ugh)).

ANYWAYS, thanks for the advice fellow craftsters.

2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Bike Help on: January 13, 2008 05:22:11 PM
Because I was accepted into college, parents bought me a bike. Here it is:

So far, I knit it a sweater along the top bar, teal and pea soup green stripes, and have a little basket for the front in the mail, I plan to sew a lining for it. Do you have any other ideas on how to make it cute?
Stereotypically I am a little indie girl, so like any other hipstah I crave to be original and creative. Fellow bike kids have adopted polaroids in the spokes and painting their bike neon colors. (I don't want to paint a brand new bike that I didn't buy.)

3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Knitting Scholarships? on: January 06, 2008 01:05:41 PM
I am currently applying to many (ugh many) scholarships. During my search, I stumbled across a scholarship for knitting a wool garment.

So, as strange as this might sound I wanted to ask two questions:
1) What do you suggest I knit?
2) Do you know of any other knitting scholarships?

*I thought there are also many other people interested in participating. Many of us are struggling college kids.  Wink

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / 2 questions (pattern help and advice) on: October 28, 2007 10:32:31 PM
Hi, I'm Ali and I've been knitting since January-ish. No problem so far except I'm knitting this hat:

Here's the link:http://knitonthenet.com/issue1/patterns/clochestashhat/

This is the part I do not understand at all: Change to 5mm DPN's by knitting across 48sts on first DPN, and the next 48sts with second, pick up and knit 20sts down open back seam of hat, then 20 up other side of open back seam with third DPN. (136sts).

Would you all mind helping me out?

Also, I have a question, I'm what you call a nervous knitter. Weird awkward social interactions result in me pulling out the latest project. People don't really care, but Dr. Shrink says that it's being used as an unreliable escape. But i disagree, it's relaxing and challenging, I could be smoking crack as such  "escape" What is your opinion? Do you knit to calm yourself and you're a tiny bit obsessed with yarn running through your fingers?

Thanks so much for any help offered, I appreciate it.

6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / grace? beret on: October 24, 2007 08:15:23 PM
a while ago, this pattern was posted for this beautiful purple hat. i think it was called grace or something..but my memory isn't very sharp, so probably not.  Wink

does anyone remember or have the link?

oh and it was worn purl side up. maybe that'll help. thank you thank you.
7  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / knitting club stress on: October 18, 2007 10:12:33 PM
at my high school, there is a knitting club and as the president (ha) i thought the products knitted could be donated, right? right. well we decided to make hats, but no one has circulars and when i tried to show them how to join in a round, they flipped and went on about garter stitch. blah!

so i was wondering if anyone had a flat hat pattern that can be sewn up the back? super easy peasy? something with needles on the large size too.

yes, thank you so much.
8  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / secret garden tam of stellar proportions on: September 19, 2007 09:35:46 PM
so i followed this most awesome pattern:https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=194445.msg2050958;topicseen#msg2050958. i just used size 11 circs instead...because i wanted it to go quickly.
i knitted it during all my classes and got yelled at every single time, so much grief. so worth it though

heh dork pose:

hat itself:

well i adore this hat and cannot wait to wear it tomorrow, show all my silly professors that only good things can come out of knitting.

love ali
9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / birthday present for my teenage girlfriend. on: August 09, 2007 06:31:26 PM
my girlfriend's birthday is like next week

age: going to be 17
sex: girl and yes, she loves it
interests: smoking, writing overdramatic screenplays, being wild, and her cats. she doesn't really "care" about the environment or even anything. this makes us complete opposites.

basically.. i can badly sew, crochet and kinda knit. but as far as ideas go.. i'm blank. i don't think she appreciate a half baked stuffed toy. she wants to be mature and is convinced she already 18.

any ideas? besides taking her shopping and driving her to the beach, i'm completely blank.

like i said, her and i are total opposites and i'm at a loss what'd she want.
wahh help!
