651  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Minnesota "in a box" on: December 02, 2006 01:09:12 PM
This might be a little on the pricey side, but there's a book out there called "How To Talk Minnesotan" that I love.  I don't live in Minnesota, but all my family is from there & I spent all my summers on the lake.  Its fun to read about the crazy culture!!

Super cute and I *too* am going to make these as stocking stuffers for friends.  I'm getting out the sewing machine tomorrow morning.  Smiley

p.s. My DBF loved the patterns of the fabric.  Great colors!

I know we're a month past Halloween, but none of my non-sewing and non-crafting friends truly understood the work and creativity that went into our costumes this year.... I'm so glad I found this board and I hope others get a kick out of it!

This year for Halloween my DBF and I were cookie monster and a girl scout.  We made most of the costumes ourselves, excluding the tights, shoes, and my white shirt.

Couple photos here:

I made his blue suit (with 4 yards of blue furry fabric that was 70% off at the fabric store) and he papier machied the head, using a balloon-type punching ball as a guide for the size.  He glued blue fabric strips to the head, added black nylons for the mouth opening, white styrofoam balls for eyes, and ... voile!  COOKIE MONSTER!

For my costume, I sewed a little green skirt and a green beret our of felt.  I made my sash ALL by hand, including the merit badges and the troop number.  I used iron-on transfer paper to make the badges and green cotton material for the sash.

Sash details...  The "Austin, TX" and troop "2-2-2" were done with iron-on patches.  The Cookie Monster and "Girl Scout Dedication" were badges I bought on e-bay.

Merit badges...  I thought, I'm all grown up now!!  I'm getting a merit badge for all the stuff I've done as an adult.  I gave myself badges for Running With the Bulls in Spain, planning three bachelorette parties this year (I have "male" swiril sticks as a badge), playing "Bunco" with the girls, Loving to Fondue, Flippy Cup Championships, Laying Out in the Sun, and an homage to my obsession with cows!

I also made a little purse out of an official Girl Scout Thin Mints box!

Thanks for letting me share!
I love this site.  Cheesy

I love it!

I can't wait to use this idea for the two baby showers I'm going to this coming month!
