51  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / quilting notebook on: November 22, 2004 06:59:01 AM
i'm almost finished with this book (a christmas gift for my mom)..

this is a coptic bound book made with her old scrubs (she's a nurse) and fabric glue.
all four embroideries are from Sublime Stitching's Craftopia patterns.

i added a snap to keep the book closed, a fabric bookmark, and pockets for a calculator & pencils & scissors.

i can't decide whether to cover the spine or not.. just to make it look neater.

53  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Princess Kit on: November 13, 2004 12:22:25 PM
i made a "princess kit" for my best friend's birthday this spring..
i love how a collection of random objects can become a gift when you package it right!

i included:

a little colored instruction book  page 1 page 2 page 3-4 page 5-6 page7-8 page 9

a necklace beaded from Robyn's pattern
a decorated mask

a toy frog & lipgloss (for kissing, of course!)
girly pom-pom socks, some chocolate & a box of kleenex (for snotty princesses)

a princess remote, designed to command servants to do her every bidding
a few teeny soldier toys (knights in shining armor)
a little black book, with phone numbers like David Duchovny's (1-800-HOT-BUNS)

54  COOKING / Dessert / cake decorating - come share!! on: November 12, 2004 04:14:14 PM
hey, folksies.  Smiley
just wanted to share some of my confectionary artwork.

these are my wilton class cakes.. oh, my teacher was soo disappointed i wouldn't use the white picket fence like in the book.. and the plain yellow butterfly..

the swing image was freehanded from some clipart.
i used a transparency to trace a web photo of the monarch, then covered the transparency with wax paper and piped/toothpicked royal icing right over it.

and these are some cookies i freehanded.
with just a toothpick. really. that's it.
because i have to do everything the hard way.  Roll Eyes

though i must credit the original art to Mary Engelbreit, Cicely Mary Barker, and Rosemary Wells.

55  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / quilting notebook for my mom on: November 05, 2004 01:09:55 PM
so i'm thinking about making a blank book for my mom for christmas..

have a little embroidery on the cover. she does a lot of machine quilting these days, so i might have a pleated pocket on the inside front cover for a pencil and a little calculator.. and maybe a regular pocket in the back for her to stick extra notes or pictures in. or scissors, i suppose.

pockets kinda require fabric, though.
what kind of glue works best for fabric on cardboard? fabric glue? mod podge?

any other ideas?

57  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / help- danceable wings? on: October 29, 2004 02:44:22 PM
i'm running behind on my halloween costume and thought i'd poll *ahem*beg*cough* for some help.

i'm going to be a dragonfly, and i want to have the wings attached to my arms (probably an elastic band i can slip my arms through).. but i also want to be able to let them hang loose down my back, so that i can dance without whacking people.  Wink

any suggestions to keep them on me, when not attached to my arms?

here's a pic of what i have in mind.
the wings themselves are already made, and extend further than shown..

58  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / christmas advent calendar swap? on: September 24, 2004 11:28:29 AM
anyone interested in making some advent calendars?

an advent calendar is traditionally a large-ish picture with numbered doors (one for each day between Dec 1st & 25th). the doors open to reveal small pictures, or little gifts. it's just a cute way to countdown to christmas, and can be made out of paper, fabric, etc.

like these- http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0735814716/ref=sib_db_rdr/102-3253076-8709700#reader-page

i love them, even though i'm not particularly religious..  Smiley
and i've always wanted to try making one.
59  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / very silly fan portrait by a non-artist on: September 09, 2004 11:23:18 PM
hey. i'm strangely proud of this little piece even though it looks nothing like the reference photo i used. there's logic for ya.

hooray Tony Leung Chiu Wai! for those of you who don't know, he's been in films like Happy Together, Hard Boiled, and Hero (that new one costarring Jet Li).

done a few years ago for the Hong Kong Cinema class. and even though it looks better PhotoShopped with some noise and color, i won't do it and you can't make me. ptttb.

60  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Spike Pumpkin on: September 09, 2004 11:16:00 PM
my brain won't shut up. so.. 1 am posts on craftster! whee!  Roll Eyes

this is a halloween pumpkin i made 3 years ago.. freehanded from the image source below. it's the only "real" pumpkin i've carved (not counting triangle-y eyed ones), and despite what all the websites say, you don't need fancy schmancy tools.

being at college, i used what i had: a gigantic knife and an itty-bitty eyeglasses screwdriver. hah! that's patience for ya. and i came away with one important lesson- if you're going to photograph a jack-o-lantern, turn off the friggin' flash!
