Way to go! Looks like they turned out fantastic.

I'm pretty new as well, and I can tell you that patterns aren't quite as scary or vague as they initially seem.  I've had a lot of luck with patterns by New Look that are marked "easy".

Aislynn, no it is made with 100% cotton.  The cloth is much like a white bedsheet.

Thank you so much for the compliments everyone Smiley

My daughter asked me to sew her a dress for her grade nine grad.  Considering I had only sewn from a pattern once before in my life, I didn't feel too confident that it would turn out, but wanted to give it a try.

I couldn't be happier with how things did turn out.  The dress fits, it looks great, AND best of all, she likes it.

I had to take the zipper out three times and redo it to get a placement that worked for her, but it was worth it.

I also altered the pattern very slightly (it's a New Look pattern, don't have the number handy but if someone wants it, I'll go find out).  The pattern only calls to line the top half of the dress, but I lined the skirt as well.  I added extra loops to hold the ribbon, and we didn't sew the ribbon in place so she can move it and tie it wherever she wants.  Also, we chose to use ribbon for the straps and had them tie behind the neck instead of just putting white straps over the shoulders.

Sorry for the quality of the photos.

I'd also love to know how you did the gathering in the back Smiley

I'm not sure it would work well with knit.. it would probably depend on how loose the weave is.  As you sew, you have to stretch the elastic, which is shorter than the width of your fabric.  I imagine if you were using a knit fabric, it would be hard not to also stretch out the fabric a bunch, and this might make it look weird after it's been sewn.

However, it's really easy to give it a try and find out, so why not?

I used the technique found on the Burdastyle.com how-to, where you just sew in rows of elastic. Smiley

Tivaclare, if you just sewed it so that the top got wider along the sideseam as it approached the hem, you'd have lots of room for a tummy with a baby in it Smiley

I used the Eight Dollar Dress How-To on BurdaStyle.com (http://www.burdastyle.com/howtos/show/724) to make this summer top for myself.  This is the second piece of clothing I've ever sewn, so I'm pretty pleased.  I think it turned out pretty good.
