1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / triangle top bikini on: July 05, 2010 08:23:14 PM
i want to make a lingerie outfit with the top in the style of a triangle top bikini. the fabric i am planning on using isn't stretchy though- so i am wondering if i need to put darts in the top or if i should just cut out some triangles and sew them. i hope this question makes sense.

2  SEWING IN GENERAL / Machine Embroidery: Discussion and Questions / Brother LB6770PRW Project Runway Sewing-and-Embroidery Machine on: December 20, 2009 08:34:35 PM
Hi everyone. My poor sewing machine bit the dust this week (just in time for xmas)... so now i am considering trading up and getting a sewing and embroidery machine. The Brother LB6770PRW Project Runway Sewing-and-Embroidery Machine is in my price range and seems like a pretty neat machine- but i want to make my own designs and i'm not sure if that is possible with this machine. Also- I'm a mac user. does anyone know the answer to my question? Also any other reviews of this machine or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / furniture on etsy? and too much variety? on: July 21, 2009 08:48:07 PM
i am starting an esty shop focused on selling products made from post-consumer materials. i'm going to be offering lots of items-hand knit accessories and clothing, sewn clothing, hand dyed yarn, hand spun yarn, vintage items, furniture, and household items. i am concerned that people may not want to buy furniture based on shipping costs? does anyone sell furniture on etsy? if so have you had any success?

i'm also a little worried that i have too many different kinds of items. they all center around the theme of being 'green' by reusing materials and giving them a new lease on life. on one hand i think that it should work because the items that i am selling are all very common in the indie shops in my town- but on the other hand i'm worried because it seems like people tend to have more of a niche on etsy.

thanks for your help!
4  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / wisdom tooth extraction survival kit on: June 05, 2009 03:06:23 PM
i need some help. i want to make a cute little survival kit for a friend who had their wisdom teeth removed. but i'm not sure what to include. i think i will make a bag that looks like a big tooth to present all of the goodies in. so far i am thinking...

-coloring book & crayons
-recipes for yummy mushy foods
-meal coupons (good for one home cooked mushy meal)
-a blank 'book of wisdom' for them to fill in

any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Knitwear Design/ Textile Design School on: October 26, 2008 09:58:12 PM
Hi fellow knitters! I am about to graduate with my BA in Women's Studies. I am thinking I want to go in a different direction in life- so instead of following through with my original plan and getting a MA straight away- I am thinking about getting another undergrad in design. I just learned that knitwear design programs exist and I am really interested. I have been knitting for 8 years and spinning and dyeing for 2 years.

Does anyone hold a degree in textile design or knitwear design? I would love to hear about your experience and what you're doing now.

Are there a lot of jobs in knitwear design? Is it mainly jobs designing knits for designer collections or designing knits for pattern books?

Anything you know- please!
6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Central Park Hoodie Question... on: August 27, 2008 10:05:16 AM
so I am knitting the central park hoodie. the instructions say

"Work even in
patt until armhole measures 8 (8, 8, 8, 9, 8, 9, 9)", end-
ing with  a WS row. "

what does it mean for the armhole to measure 8 in- like 8 inches from where i started the armhole decreases or 8 inches curved around the actual armhole?

thanks <3
7  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Publishing? on: July 07, 2008 03:27:41 PM
I don't know if this really counts as a crafty business venture, but I am really interested in publishing my fiber arts/ crochet/ knitting related book. It would be a non fiction with patterns and instructions on some different techniques. I have no idea where to go from here. I have the book outlined. What are my next steps? Should I complete the book before I start looking for publishers or would they want my proposal then work with me to execute the book? Please help!
8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / superwash on: November 21, 2007 11:44:12 PM
I was just wondering how fiber is made 'superwash'- what process does it go through that prevents it from felting?
9  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Old Navy has challenged my knitting skills... on: November 12, 2007 05:49:10 PM
I went to Old Navy tonight and I fell in love with a scarf. I can't bring myself to buy a knitted scarf that I could make so I decided to knit it myself. I went home and got on the website and this is the description of the item:

Extra-chunky yarn gives this scarf a handmade look, but the intricate cabled patterns go way beyond "knit one, purl two." Each corner has the added bonus of a fluffy pom-pom.

It seems to me like they are saying 'the chunky yarn makes it LOOK hand knit- but it's too complicated for a knitter to make"... umm.. not this knitter!

How can I figure out this cable pattern? Does anyone know what it is?
10  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Twisted Ovary Hats on: November 01, 2007 09:40:51 AM
I had some painful ovarian cysts this past week and I have been in a lot of pain.  These hats took my mind off of it. I got the pattern off of crafster. Thanks to whoever wrote it up. They are the BR knockoff hat <3
