11  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Wanting to get craft book published on: June 10, 2008 04:53:44 PM
I have a few ideas for craft books that I want to get published but I have no idea where to eeeeeeven start!  The first idea I have uses a product made by a company that publishes their own craft books and brochures and things.  I would be using their product so it makes sense to approach them.  But - does anyone have any ideas on how to go about it??  Do I just contact them through their email type thing on their website?  Is there a way to show them pictures of my projects and ideas and make sure they stay mine?

I just have no idea where to begin.......

Thanks in advance for your help!
12  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Attaching string to glass? on: June 03, 2008 08:11:24 PM
I have this killer idea and have actually made a few cool things attaching string to glass - like really thin surger string on things like glass vases and candle holders.  I used Mod Podge and it worked really really well but I want to make sure that's the best product available.  Plus, I used enough of it that I want to make sure I'm doing the most economical but also best quality work.  Here's a little sample of what I'm doing:

I used Glossy Finish Mod Podge and it makes it look sorta like the glass is actually fused onto the glass!  it's pretty awesome.

Any suggestions on using other things besides Mod Podge to attach things like string to glass?

Thanks in advance for your help!!
13  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Buying supplies at Yard Sales on: April 10, 2008 01:23:04 PM
Hi -

My 22 yr old son and I are coming up with some great ideas for crafts to sell on etsy and at craft shows and maybe consignment shops or ebay.  Our brains are a-spinnin'!

We will be going to yard sales for supplies.  It just occurred to me today that I have receipts for other supplies I buy but how do I keep records of purchasing supplies at yard sales?  Do I ask the person for a receipt?  Can I just keep a record book and would that be legitimate enough to use for taxes and stuff?

Thanks in advance for your help!

14  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Great display idea without electricity on: March 16, 2008 05:43:08 PM
So, I was walking through one of my favorite second hand shops (a.k.a. GOLD MINES!) and spied something that all of a sudden clicked in my head to use for a great craft display!

The item is - - - - that battery operated carousel for the microwave!!!!!

It was one of those kinds where it turns on and slowly spins when something heavy is set on it.  At this point, I don't have anything that I'll be selling that would need to turn around but, how cool would that be??

Just thought I'd share and maybe help someone else make a super duper display!
15  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Great idea - somebody beat me to it -now what? on: March 09, 2008 05:19:30 PM

OK, I have the items bought and the idea in my head but I'm not feeling well so I'm going to wait to make my new item.  So, while surfing around Etsy, I found an item very very similar to mine!!!!

I'm so bummed!!

I'm thinking - my idea is different enough that it wouldn't be exactly the same but it uses the same materials and has the same function.

I really want to make them and list them in my shop but I don't want the other seller to think I'm copying them!  That would be a really bad thing, if someone thought I was doing that.

So, what do you think fellow Etsyans - should I contact the other seller and let them know I'm not copying them?  Should I just make them and list them and see what happens??  Should I just give up the idea??

P.S.  I'm kinda bummed because I thought I was pretty brilliant to come up with this 'all by myself'
16  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / listing shop in email 'signature' on: March 07, 2008 04:46:28 PM
I'm FINALLY adding my shop's addy to my email signatures on yahoo and hotmail but I'm wondering how to list it in a nice way and not so needy or over-salesman-y.  I want to say something different than "check out my shop!" which is the only thing I've come up with so far!

Any ideas?
17  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Recon Goodwill Hat! on: February 23, 2008 07:46:37 PM
Ok, this is embellished, not really a total reconstruction but it turned out so cute I just had to share/boast Smiley about my find and show how cute a $2 hat can look!  This is for a friend of mine who started chemo this week:

She LOVES teddy bears!  I was so geeked when I re-found these beads in my Bead Bucket!  They're teddy bears but not cheezy or tacky!  They look like a cool pattern from far away and then, when you get closer.......Teddy Bears!!

So, yea, $2 hat into a fuzzy bunch o' love  Smiley

18  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Buyer buying a ton of stuff...? on: January 26, 2008 06:20:13 AM

I sold two scarves yesterday!  Yay!

But I'm wondering if this is OK or legit or.....??

I wanted to look at the buyer's shop and when I got to her shop, there is nothing in it, no profile and she has over 600 positive feedbacks!  My two scarves are part of 25 items that she bought just yesterday!

Is this a good/bad/nuetral thing???  I'm guessing she's a wholesaler but for some reason, I'm just wondering if there is anything fishy going on.  She bought my scarves using Paypal so the transaction is complete.

So, is there anything I should be concerned about or should I just be thankful I had a sale yesterday?

Thanks in advance for your input
19  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / A Negative into a positive.... on: January 19, 2008 07:27:03 PM
Well, something cool happened that could have been a bad thing but, for some reason, that light bulb in my brain kicked in and I came up with an idea that may turn out to have quite a good outcome!  So, I thought I'd let you guys know and maybe you could use this idea some time!

So, someone bought a pair of my Puff-Me-Knots - - Yay!!  And the day after she bought them, she convo'd me and asked if I could mail them Priority Mail because she needed them by the weekend for a birthday party.  Well, I realized that I hadn't made any distinction in my descriptions any where regarding how I ship things so I decided not to mention extra charges to her and just bite the bullet, chalk it up to a learning experience and add some details about shipping to my shop!

The day after she asked if it could be shipped Priority, she convo'd me again and asked if she owed me anything extra.  This is where the light bulb went off.   Smiley  I told her the extra charge was minor so if she would be so kind as to tell all of her friends about my shop and somehow help me promote, we could call it even!  Tah-dah!  heehee

She convo'd back and said she had bought the Puff-Me-Knots as a birthday present for her daughter's friend who was in a SKATING CLUB with her daughter and they met every Saturday!!!  She got them for the girl to put on her skates!!  Total Coolness!!  The other skater moms will be at the party Saturday so she'll be telling them all about where she got the Puff-Me-Knots AAAANNDD ---  She has a blog where she'll be talking about my Puff-Me-Knots!!!  How cool is that??

So, thought I'd let you know and maybe you can use this idea some time!

20  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / Bucket O' Luv! on: January 07, 2008 09:45:38 PM
Ok, I was supPPOOOSED to be going to sleep last night when thoughts of valentines day started wandering into my brain and WHAM!! Lightbulb!!!  I had these supplies in the house (ok, I had to go get a paint pen but...) and came home from work tonight and - voila!

The writing says "How do I love thee..."  heehee - so, you put sayings on the papers, get it??

And you can put stuff in the bottom that your sweetiepie can find after they take out the papers!!

I have other versions - like one with polka dots that says "I love you because...." and one with flowers that says "This is why...."

waddya think??
