1  Re: I won an art contest! Now what!?! in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by lava on: September 01, 2014 02:01:27 PM
This  is the second painting that won.  It was a Freethinkers art contest and they requested paintings based on Freethinkers, atheism, feminism, science, and zoology.  I won the atheism and feminism categories.

2  I won an art contest! Now what!?! in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by lava on: September 01, 2014 08:28:32 AM

(Above painting is one of the pieces)
So I won first place for two paintings in an art contest, which also includes having my paintings hang in a gallery for a month and really, I'm freaking out.  I've always just painted for myself, maybe given a piece of two to family or friends, but now it's all out there in the public for everyone to see! And long story short, I really don't feel like an artist or all that  great at painting!  Ack!
The art show is on Friday and I have no idea what to wear or to expect.  I know my fellow Craftsters are fantastic at advice and I could really use some!  Thanks in advance if you have any for me!

3  My spell book! in Halloween Decor and Parties by lava on: October 06, 2013 02:02:57 PM
So being a kid growing up in the 80's and 90's, I loved Hocus Pocus. So needed a book of my own!  Not exactly like the movie, got to have one of my own of course, but inspired by it and a post from Pinterest.

It started as a fake book of Oliver Twist, the kind that looks like a book but you open it and it's a box.  I made the eyes out of flat marbles and magazine eyes.  Then I glued them to the book, I crumpled up paper and twisted it and rubbed it until it was nice and soft and then glued it all over the book and a layer of paint a bit of sanding and viola!  I love it. Smiley

4  A zebra plushie! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by lava on: September 03, 2013 05:05:06 PM
So, after making the first one, I had to make her a friend!  This was originally going to be a Rainbow Dash like pony, but while I was painting the eyes, I accidently smudged some black on the body and it wasn't going to wash off, so viola!  Just add more black!  There are no mistakes, just happy accidents!  Still need a bit more black on the nose I think but all in all I like it!  I made this one from an old polo shirt!

She stands up a lot better than the first one, which I think is from the more sturdy materiel.  I hand drew on all the stripes and of course painted the eyes (don't recommend watching Netflix while you paint, makes you a wee bit careless!)

I love the tail and mane though!  Had to look at a thousand or so zebra pics to make sure I was getting the stripes on sort of right lol.  Ok enough of my rambling, enjoy!

5  Pony plushie! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by lava on: September 02, 2013 07:45:34 PM
So my little girl will be turning 4 next week, and she asked for lots and lots and lots of ponies.  So, of course buying them is one thing but it's sooo fun to make things. Plus she seems to love the things I make her and I'm going to enjoy that while I can Smiley.

I found this pattern online http://jackiekie.deviantart.com/art/Pony-Plushie-Pattern-v2-0-331784231  and it looked fantastic.  I did enlarge it by 2 1/2 times though because I like big plushies. Ok ok, and they are easier to sew lol.

She's made of white fleece, eyes are painted with regular acrylic paint.  Her mane and tail are cupcake printed fleece that used to be an old pair of my pajamas. (I also made her a bathrobe from those pajamas lol)

Her hooves have lentils in them, so they have a little weight to help her stand up.  Her head's a bit floppy though, but I kinda like her like that.  I've taken to calling her Cupcake, but she may have a new name after next week when she get's to her owner!  Lots of fun making this, I think I might have to make a whole herd!   I like painting the eyes, much more fun than safety eyes.   Thanks for looking!

6  My Dalek! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by lava on: August 20, 2013 07:39:34 PM
So I kept hearing about this Doctor Who....and a few months ago decided to check out an episode.  Well you know how that goes.  Days later I crawl out of my bedroom, red eyed, caffeinated, emotionally torn to shreds and having watched all the new episodes, all the old episodes, all of Torchwood and even all of Sherlock that I can stream from Amazon or Netflix.  Needless to say I'm hooked.
Well, I have this cool robot, from the late 80's called Emiglio.  It's neat, runs around remote control and you can use radio control to make it talk in weird voices.  But it's not a Dalek.  I need a Dalek.  What's a Whovian crafter to do?
Make Dalek of course!

He's not quite finished, still need another coat or two of paint but there it is!  My Dalek!

And here are some progress shots!

It all began with foam board, and plastic balls from the dollar store.  And flat rate boxes, random pen parts, chopsticks, and a weird wire head massager.

Emiglio is ready to become a Dalek!

Fit test

Before paint!  I love the eye stalk and eye sooo much. lol

My little Whovian!  She runs around saying EXTERMINATE  all the time. Like a Dalek says it too lol.

Size reference, she's 39 inches tall.

Dalek love!  Aww!

Oh and his head is made out of a dollar store chip bowl lol.  And almost forgot, this is my sonic screwdriver that I made from random pen parts and glue and painted with nail polish lol

Ya know...to keep the Dalek in line Wink
Ok!  That's it for now! I'll try to pop back by with some video of it in action once I get another coat or two of paint down.  Just was so excited to see it mostly finished as I've been working on it since just after the fourth of July.  I hope you like it at least half as much as I do!

7  From rusty planter to fancy canopy! in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by lava on: July 31, 2013 05:36:50 PM
So I went to a rummage sale and seen this rusty outdoor planter.  I walked by it about ten times and then decided it was telling me that it needed to come home with me.  It needed a new life!  So I brought it it home, cleaned it up, spray painted it with the ever so marvelous Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze, attached my sheer curtains to the inside and hung it up!  Viola!  A sad little planter no more, now it's an elegant canopy/curtain for over my bed!  Even my husband likes it, and he's super picky Smiley

8  Doctor Who shrink plastic pendants! in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by lava on: June 23, 2013 11:58:49 AM
So, yeah I kept hearing about this "Doctor Who"  and thought, ok I'll watch and episode see if I like it.  5 seasons and hours and hours and hours later....I guess you could say I'm hooked!  And what's better than watching something you enjoy, than crafting about it!  I made these pendants for necklaces or key chains.  I haven't decided yet which, though I'm pretty sure I have to have a sonic screwdriver necklace.
Anywho..(see what I did there lol)  On to the pictures of which there are many!  Sorry I get excited lol

One of these days I'll make a light box for taking nice pics but till then!

9  Quoth the Raven, Nevermore. in Halloween Decor and Parties by lava on: September 24, 2012 10:26:37 AM
I've been on a wreath making kick lately, and felt inspired to whip up this little guy for Halloween or Poe lovers. Smiley

I made him from Dollar Store stuff!  The entire wreath was only about 5 bucks to make!  I'm so hooked...how many wreaths can a person hang in their home before they start looking crazy?  Thanks for looking!

10  Got an asprin? Headless corpse with head in jar. in Halloween Costumes by lava on: November 01, 2010 04:34:49 PM
So, in pursuit of the most awesome and scary costume this year, we came up with.  The headless guy.  Yep.  And he carried his head around with him in a jar!  It was alot easier to make than it looks. Really.  We made the basic body frame out of cardboard and stuffed it down into his backpack. Then, added the shirt, cut the back off a big plastic jar and glued it to the shirt.  (Umm yeah did I mention I LOVE glue. Lots and lots of glue..)  Anyway, enough talking onto the pics!

If you're curious...his arms are down in the pants and those pants are up to his armpits pretty much.  Yeah...so Mom had to get all the candy!

This is my first entry into a challenge!  Hope everyone likes it as much as we did!
