1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Fabric Dyeing question on: September 28, 2013 12:31:51 PM
Hopefully this is the right board to be asking this question, but here goes: I have fabric that my Mom sent (I got 3 boxes of random fabric! Cheesy) BUT one of the fabrics is a dusty rose that I would love to dye a dark violet and make a skirt out of. However, I have no idea of the fibre content. Is there any trick to finding out if the fabric will hold the dye? Without wasting all of my dye?
2  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Pattern (free) or basic instructions for Circular Shrug? on: June 17, 2013 07:35:51 PM
I've been searching the internet for a circular shrug, as in you start in the centre back with what looks like a doily or a granny square?

I'm a fairly experienced crocheter so even some basic instructions would work for me.

I just need a simple project for a 5-hr flight next week. Cheesy

3  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Many Jeans Make One Tote Bag on: November 05, 2012 05:04:30 PM
I made this tote bag for my daughter who is in Sr. High. She needed a bag that she could carry all her stuff in from class to class since they now have 2 min between classes! (Small school).

We figured it needed loads of pockets for pens, snacks, notes, etc.

And the pockets on the inside.
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Help... started sewing a jacket but now I don't like how it looks on: June 09, 2012 04:29:53 PM
I started sewing a jacket (cardigan) for my daughter and it looked cute in the picture but once I had the front and back sewn together I had her try it on and it just does not do anything for her. Its too square and boxy. I'm thinking to make it more rounded and bring the waist in. BUT, I don't have enough fabric to cut a new facing -- the facing I have is of course for the boxy style. The fabric is a knit. My daughter's solution is to just re-shape it and not worry about the facing at all and just turn it under & stitch along the edge. Would that look ok?
5  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Basic shapeless black suit jacket -- what to do to make it flattering? on: August 21, 2011 07:42:12 PM
I'm just not sure what to do with a suit jacket that was donated to me. I like the colour and the length is fine. Its a very basic lined jacket that has very little shaping and has a real square "boxy" look.

The jacket is a size 16 and I wear a size 12-14 so it just needs to be shaped at the waist to be more flattering. Any ideas of what I could do considering that its lined? I was thinking of pleating at the waist but would that work with the lining??

Also the sleeves are slightly too long. Any ideas there too?

I've had crafter-block with this jacket since it was donated to me. I've held onto it because I know with a few tweaks it could look very good!
6  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Camping Recipes and Tips (?) on: April 09, 2011 05:35:07 PM
My hubby just booked us for 8 days of camping for early July! I'm pretty excited but it will be 8 days of non-power with 4 teens/tweens and 2 adults. We are in a tent trailer so we do have a fridge since that runs on propane.

Sooo... I am scrambling for ideas now!

I do have one cool idea to share that we came up with a few years ago: We use cookies that have chocolate on one side to make smores. If you use the cookies to pull the marshmallow off the stick then your fingers tend to stay neater (usually!)

We will do the usual hamburgers and hot dogs but would love recipes and tips for more variety.
7  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Knitting and Crocheting for Pre-Mature Babies - a few questions on: October 11, 2010 07:15:59 PM
My daughter is in Grade 9 and each student has do a project that will help the community. I made a few suggestions to my daughter, among them being to knit and/or crochet for premies, and my she liked that one the most, so that is her project. So, for those of you who do this, are there specific things to keep in mind? What colours are best? Does she just start making the items and deliver them to a local NICU? Or do we have to arrange this with the hospital ahead of time? Do different hospitals have different policies?  She has till June to work on this and she is really excited about doing this!

To be honest, it has inspired me as well, I may be adding items to her donation as well! My heart breaks thinking of what these parents go through and anything that helps them through those moments is so worth it.
8  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Spray Painting Tin on: July 17, 2010 11:15:33 AM
Sorry if this topic has been covered before, I did do some searching and could not find the answer.

I have some great metal buckets that I got from the liquor store when I bought beer for the hubby last year. They have the "Molson" logo on them so they really would not go so great in my living room for storage. I would like to spray paint them so they can sit on a shelf and hide my crafting while being in my living room! SOOO... do I need to sandpaper it down first? OR can I just go ahead and spray paint?

9  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Birthday Party for 10 year old -- wants soap making at her party!? on: March 07, 2009 10:02:41 AM
My DD has insisted she wants soap making at her party (this coming up Friday) since last year when her older sister did it at her party last year.... BUT I am not totally on board with this since it was a disaster with the older DD's party. I had bought the "Life of the Party" soap making kit last year and it all looked so fun and cute but the results were anything but, the smell was not what we expected (supposed to blueberry smell but it smelled yucky not nice and fruity) and the girls were bored since there were only two trays for pouring the soap and 5 girls at the party.

HELP!  Huh What to do? Suggestions for making this party better? OR any suggestions along this line that are better suited for a party would be most welcome as well.

My 12-year-old daughter has invaded my craft supplies and made some birthday cards for her friends.

She asked me to post them here for feedback! Cheesy
