1  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / HELP!!! FRUSTRATED- Cashmere scarf won't hold dye!!!! on: December 22, 2010 10:48:59 AM
Hi all!
I have been dyeing wool and various other fibers INCLUDING cashmere, with no problems at all.  I bought an ivory 100% cashmere scarf to dye for my dad for Christmas and today when I tried to do it, I had a beautiful combination dye going, but when I washed it out, 90% of the dye came out!

I rewashed the scarf again and boiled the stupid thing in acid dye for two hours and it still only held a very very icy pastel bit of splotchy dye.  I even added more vinegar too- I finally had to use up the dye on other fibers so it would not go to waste.

Do you think they treated this scarf with something so it would not take dye?  I have NEVER had this problem before with any cashmere anything, and I have been dyeing it for years now with great results.

I have to see my dad tomorrow, and I had to give him this faded icky scarf now.

I don't know what to do!!!
2  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: HELP- me find a spinning wheel that does novelty well. on: October 05, 2009 12:03:15 PM
Thanks, everyone!  Someday maybe I can get one.  Till then, well, I will just have to wing it with what I have.  Sad

Wheels are SO expensive and around here, finding one at a good price almost never happens.
3  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: I WON a PRIZE! I am so excited on: October 01, 2009 04:40:43 PM
I like all three yarns, but I have to admit that the one that won is my favorite. Congratulations!

Someday I will post the pattern I plan to try to make with the bright one and the winning one (neon not rainbow is the bright one).

It is striped and very avant garde.

It will take me a long time to spin enough though so who knows when it will be done?  Smiley
4  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: HEXAGON COAT-MY 1ST EVER HAND KNITTED PROJECT (I Spun & Dyed the Fibers too)!!! on: October 01, 2009 04:38:57 PM
Wow, so bright!! The first one made me think of the Beatles, and  I agree with QuiltersBlock, that second one to me screams Joseph!
Where do people find spinning wheels? This could be a future purchase for me (however, I might have to hide it from everyone I know, they'll probably think I've taken it all a step too far...!)

Sorry it took so long to reply to your question- every time I get on to reply to posts, something happens and I only get to do one or two!

Okay, the only way I was able to get a spinning wheel was at the fiber festival.  That way I could try one and see what it was like.  But it was also the cheapest too.  And it was made of hardware parts so easy to replace if urgent.

The one I have is a Hitchhiker and it is from www.merlintree.com

The other brands of wheels that I have seen (I am not overly experienced in other ones) is Louet, Majacraft (I am told this is the wish of most spinners), Ashford- and there is another I can not spell right- Schadt maybe?  I can not remember.

Some day I hope to get a Majacraft, but for now, I will use my little hitchhiker until I can not anymore. LOL

And as for hiding- I did at first, but it is so much fun that I find other people get fascinated and want to see! LOL

I remember seeing your first rainbow coat on here and I loved it!!!  I, too have not been more ambitious than a scarf and that was 10 years ago... one of the many projects I never finished.  I stuck with crocheting because I need to see results to keep me motivated.... but you made me rethink the knit.  Beautiful and vibrant.  I love them both!

You remember?  Wow, that is so cool you remember that coat.

I have to say that once I started dyeing and spinning my own wool, suddenly the motivation factor went WAY up.  Before, I just could not do much of anything- it just bored me because I kept thinking that everyone else could do the same type of thing.

When I started creating my very own yarns, OMG I just can not wait to make something.   THAT is SO not me.  I could never finish anything let alone a COAT- or a HUGE coat- and certainly not all by HAND!!!

So, if you can at all get into spinning and dyeing your own stuff, you would probably freak out like me and go berserk.  LOL  It is amazing the doors it has opened up in my life.

I am madly in love with both of your coats, but I'm wisting the long one!

I am so glad you enjoy them like I do!  It is nice to be among kindred spirits here!  BTW, I hate to sound like a dunce, but what does wisting mean?

Beautiful colors!  I especially love the rainbow coat you did previously! Both items are so colorful!

I have found that since I have started doing my own brightly colored hand spinning, knitting has taken on a love that I never had at all before- I think the colors and unusual irregular shading makes it more fun to knit with.  I just can not maintain interest on dull colors when I knit or crochet- silly, I know, but whatever works to get me creating, right?  LOL

10  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / HELP! Shroat Pattern? on: September 24, 2009 06:19:25 AM
Anyone have the pattern for the Shroat as seen on Uncommon Threads a few years ago?  I just saw it for the first time on HGTV (and missed the very beginning) but there is nothing online about it anymore and I REALLY Want to make one.
