1  Two cute dresses from thrift store finds <33 (Also, need HELP!! advice pls) in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by casmuffin on: August 09, 2009 08:14:09 PM
Hello all! I post here.. rarely. I finally found time this summer to go to my local savers and found some really cute things (well more like two cute things) and here is what I did with them! (P.S. Sorry for crappy webcam pics, I'm in my dorm and i just moved in and forgot my camera).

Here's the first dress I made. I don't have any before pics but this was a basic gray knit dress that I resized, made shorter, and added some elastic for the babydoll look. This one was easy.

The next one i'm having more trouble with. Before: An XXL Cowl neck purple knit top. I LOVED the cowl neck, but it'd feel too dressed up for me, so I had to get rid of it.

After: A cute little purple dress! (belt is not made by me, lawl.)

And here's where I need help: I'm struggling with the neckline. I attempted a "bias-tape" thing but realized that doesn't work with a knit fabric.. so any ideas/suggestions on how I can fix this?

2  Help making a plaid button down babydoll top? (pic included) in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by casmuffin on: August 06, 2009 12:15:18 PM
I need some tips on how to make this:

I understand hte sleeves and what not.. but with the waist part, do I just sew elastic on the inside? Or should I take the two pieces apart, sew it together, then sew the elastic? Help!

p.s. I'm using an old men's button down to do this

3  Re: quickie dress that anybody can make - Infinity Dress and link to tutorial in Clothing Sewalongs by casmuffin on: May 31, 2009 10:07:55 AM
Hello all! I am going to my HS's prom this year (graduated last year, but going with a friend this year).. and I was just going to wear an old dress. Well, after lurking on this thread for a month.. I decided to give this a shot! I went out to Joann's and found cheap yellow polyester fabric for 2$/yd and made a prototype!

Some of my favorite ways to wear it..

Unfortunately this material is super-seethrough so I can't wear it anywhere other than the house (haha) without this tanktop on. Hopefully my trip to Joann's today will be successful in finding a prettier fabric!

4  Re: Promalong - Making your own Prom dress? Join the club! in Clothing Sewalongs by casmuffin on: January 13, 2008 04:33:36 PM
Yay for making our own prom dresses! I'm planning to make mine too for my senior prom  Grin.

So for my inspiration:

And I think i'm going to use this pattern, but obviously alter it to make it shorter because i'm 4'11" (yes i'm short):

So I speedily went on photoshop and edited that photo to try to imagine how it would look on me:

Yes, very much like a midget. haha.

Anyway, i'm still contemplating this plan and just might make it plain yellow, because i've never had to ruche before and for the breast im afraid it will be complicated.

Do you guys reccommend just making the dress from the pattern, shortening it, then try to add some fabric over the bodice to create the ruching? Also, what type of fabric would I use to get that type of effect, and still be formal? Thanks to anyone who's wlling to help Smiley

6  Cleopatra costume HELPPP in Halloween Costumes by casmuffin on: September 22, 2007 09:59:46 PM
Ok so after seeing the costume below, I REALLY would like to be cleopatra. This isn't really a cleopatra costume, but people will just assume I am cleopatra and not just a nile princess, i think Tongue. What I need help with is:

I believe I am just going to use gold costume beads for the gold beaded part of the headpiece, but the actual headband I don't have any idea where to start, like waht kind of material. Same goes for the armbands.

Anyone have any ideas?

7  Lolita-esque costume help? (pic included) in Halloween Costumes by casmuffin on: September 17, 2007 10:00:12 PM
So I really want to dress up lolita-ish, probably using Lamby's tutorial for a dress.. but what I need help is thinking of what to actually be. I know that more than half the people I know don't know what Lolita is, and i'll just be annoyed at explaining it. I'm trying to figure out what I can be lolita-esque.. for example:

-mad hatter
-queen of hearts

Any other ideas? something particularly that would look with black.. because i'm planning to go all-out lolita in may for fanime.

[edit] This is what the shape of the dress will most likely look like:

8  HOLLYWOOD "Movie Premiere" Party in Party Planning by casmuffin on: June 04, 2007 07:41:45 PM
So I was inspired by the hollywood party theme on this board, that I decided to do a "hollywood" type party for me and my sister's 18th birthday party! (Yes, we're twins). My friend just had a small hollywood party for around 10 people, and I wanted to make it different from hers, so that's why i'm having a "movie premiere" party.

I have many ideas, but I like getting input and ideas from other craftsters, or here goes nothing Smiley

So for the invitation I wanted to do something like this:

I'm going to make it look like something like this, altering the information and make it a "post-card" sized type thing and just mail it out or hand it out, whatever I feel like.

On the day of the party, When my guests walk in they will be entering from a (cheap, not expensive) red-carpet type thing, and have their picture taken by 1 or 2 people by the carpet taking pictures, almost like the "paparazzi." So I can have it for some sort of scrap book and see who came and what they were wearing.

I am also going to have a bar that serves "mocktails" (and I already have a list of these, but if you have a favorite "mocktail" just let me know Smiley) and have a relative just bartend.

I will show the movie after about 30-45 min and announce to also get food. The movie will basically be a mixture of slideshows and home videos mixed onto a DVD where I will either show silently as the dancing goes on, or make an announcement right before dancing to play the movie and then do dancing. I haven't decided yet.

For food I haven't decided on waht the FOOD FOOD is going to be, but i'm sure I want a chocolate fondue fountain (anyone know the price for this?), deep-fried oreos, and other sweets and stuff like that.

For entertainment I will have a DJ and there is enough room for dancing, and I think that is enough to keep everyone occupied.

As far as decorations go, I wanted a marquee but they are WAYY too expensive. There is this nice looking one here:

I was wondering if I could just use the styrofoam-type thing at Michael's, paint it black and silver and such, and then for the "glowing" feel, do you think I could just use white paper and put some sort of lighting inside? If not i'll just make the original idea and take cardboard and punch holes and stick in xmas lights.

Other than that i'm stumped on decorations. I have no idea what is a good color scheme. I wanted to do black, silver, white, and another color, but I don't know. I also don't know what to do about center pieces or favors. I can't do clap-board keychains because that's my friend did.

Overall, i'm trying to make this budget as tight as possible because my mom just got married this year and there isn't much to spend, but I think i'm pretty good as far as planning cheap-wise.

Any ideas as far as making my ideas better/more simpler, or adding anything that you think a "movie premiere" should have?
