11  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Re: recyled yarn KAL? on: February 20, 2008 09:03:33 PM
Thanks!

Eliea -- i think the sweater was from the 80's --- very preppy.  I originally intended to overdye it blue, but I think I'll keep it green.  It's the only green top I own now!

Here is my latest.  The yarn is 85% silk/15% cashmere and it is VERY VERY soft.  I love it.  I wish I would remember to take a before picture, but the sweater was a plain stockinette men's pullover.

This is Calla ( Magknits pattern) -- with a couple of modifications.http://www.magknits.com/Apr06/patterns/calla.htm

That is really cute.  I like the fit.

Motleycruiser -- I love the hat.  It's adorable.

LaughingLark, I think easter egg dyes are basically food coloring, aren't they?  If they are. they should work.  I have used food coloring to dye wool.  My favorite homemade dye however are the Wilton's icing.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

kalan71,  I wish I could find the tag from the orginal sweater, because I don't remember the exact blend of fibers, however I don't think the angora was more than 20%. There might have been some rayon in it, too.

I have found that it is difficult to unravel (and the result doesn't look so great) anything with too much angora in it.

Motleycruiser, I love the hat.  I prefer the right side look -- but it's cool either way.

Here's my latest made from an unraveled thrift store sweater.  It's  a very soft lambswool angora blend yarn.  I was inspired by Magknits Stargazer pattern, although I went in a bit of different direction.

That is really adorable.  I think your striping came out great.
