1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Animal Crossing Swap? on: November 23, 2008 05:27:29 AM
Is anyone interested in doing an Animal Crossing themed swap? I've seen there have been ones in the past, but I'd like to do one now!

I love this game - I play on the Nintendo DS. Here is a link to the gallery from one of the previous swaps:

I was thinking that it could consist of crafting items based on your partners favourite resident, for instance, a Blathers teapot cosy anyone?
Or a Kid-Kat baseball jersey?
Maybe a Brewster Milk Jug?
Or what about a K.K Slider iPod cosy?

2  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions / Sock monkeys and racism? on: November 13, 2008 03:08:13 AM
I have a question I want to ask - do people consider making sock monkeys to be racist or offensive in any way? The thought has not crossed my mind until this morning when I find that I have an offensive comment on my blog referring to two sock monkeys I made, in which I am asked if I am racist or just ignorant? I don't understand this and it has really upset me.

I know its just a comment on a blog and there are a lot of weirdos out there that write all sorts of nuts things just to insight people in to feeling bad... but its still really upset me  Cry

I don't consider sock monkeys to be at all racist on their own. I could only imagine them to be racist if they were used and talked about in derogatory ways concerning minority groups somehow. I just never think of them like this! Sock monkeys are joyful animals that are cute and fun to make - they are nothing about marginalizing people. But maybe I am naive and unaware of what other people think.

What else do people think about this? Is it fair to ignore this comment or should I respond to it directly? I guess I feel so upset because I have been judged unfairly and very inaccurately by someone I don't know and doesn't know me.  Cry
3  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Sock Monkey Quilt! on: September 11, 2008 01:29:15 PM
This is my first completed quilt... I have started two others but never quite managed to finish them off  Embarrassed I haven't managed to keep the thrill of starting ongoing through a big project before, so this is a real first for me!

I made the quilt for my Dad's birthday, and I can't wait to give it to him.  I really hope he likes it!

I used Moda's Monkey'n Round charm packs and some Aunt Grace 1930's repro fabrics for the star blocks and simple red and white dotty fabric for the sashing and backing. I pieced the quilt by machine and then hand quilted it using perle cotton. I used Hobbs heirloom batting to keep the quilt traditional looking and drapey.

Here is the full quilt:

And here is a detail of the quilt draping nicely:

And a detail of one of the blocks:

Comments and criticisms appreciated!  Smiley

4  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Anyone have a knitting pattern written in Chinese? on: August 13, 2008 05:37:48 AM
Hi, I have a problem that I'm hoping someone on here can help me with!

A Malaysian woman has just started working where I work and she is just settling in to the area. Her parents are visiting her at the moment and her mother  likes knitting but only reads Chinese. She is trying to find some knitting patterns written in Chinese to follow as she can't read English. We have tried looking for them online but can only find knitting patterns in English that are for things that look Chinese.

Does anyone know where we could find some?!

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Craft my National Bird Swap! on: August 06, 2008 08:09:32 AM
Would anyone be interested in a national bird themed swap? If you don't know what your national bird is, or, if you want to have a look at some other countries birds here is a site that lists them all out:

How it could work:
We get paired up and we craft things based on our partners national bird (or state/county bird if you prefer). For example: if partner A came from Maine (Black-capped Chickadee) and partner B (European Robin) from the UK, partner A would craft European Robin themed goodies for Partner B and Partner B would craft Black capped chickadee goodies for partner A. Makes sense?!

For it to work we would all need to come from a range of locations!

Would anyone else be interested in this sort of swap?  Smiley

7  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions / Where can I get real RED HEEL socks for sock monkeys in the UK? on: June 28, 2008 07:29:32 AM
I live in the UK and I really want to make a traditional red heel sock monkey, does anyone know where I can get the socks from? I can't seem to find anywhere online : ( I have seen a few on eBay but the shipping makes it un-economical, any ideas?

Thank you  Smiley
