1  New York / New York: NYC and Long Island / Blythe collectors in NYC? I have a fun project for you... on: September 03, 2007 06:06:14 AM
My crafty ladies...

I don't know exactly where this post goes, sorry!  I'm involved with a fun pilot project for Fashion Week.  I'm looking for someone in NYC (or the boroughs or Jersey) who has a Blythe doll with at least 8 outfits to photograph once a day for the duration of Fashion Week (next week). If you're interested, pm me, or email to abh75@mac.com

About the project: We'd like to cast the eyes away from Bryant Park & celeb/professional fashion during Fashion Week - & take a look at what the rest of us wear.  We've compliled a list of regular folks we know with great style & asking them to photograph themselves once a day. They'll be telling us 4 points about their outfit, i.e. where they bought something, or who made it, etc.  We'll also be asking a random question of the day. We're doing a blog, a collection of photos on flickr & a maybe printed zine.  It'll definitely be a cool peek at NY street fashion which is a main influence for the pros, although none of those clothes are really made 'for us'.

We thought it would be really funny to have a Blythe doll, with her fab fashions in the mix.  If you wanted to photograph yourself with her, that's cool too.  (we also have a few super-stylin' little kids signed up & a pooch)

Let me know if it sounds interesting to anyone! Thanks!
2  CRAFTSTER CRAFT CHALLENGES / Craftster Craft Challenge Theme Ideas, Etc. / Summer TIKI Challenge on: May 24, 2007 06:36:55 AM
How about a TIKI themed challenge to kick off summer?

Gussy-up a beach tote, create your own drink umbrellas, make a coconut bikini,
whittle a cursed idol (Remember that Hawaii episode of the Brady Bunch - Peter & the tarantula!), beautify some board shorts, build a grass hut (err...).  Well you get the idea.

You could use straw or bamboo in a design & there are some brilliant tiki fabrics out there.  Could be kitchy & vintage.  Could be fun!
3  CRAFTSTER CRAFT CHALLENGES / Craftster Craft Challenge Theme Ideas, Etc. / A Sweet Treats * Sugary Goodness Challenge on: March 02, 2007 05:45:57 AM
Why not a sweets challenge?  Crafted items with a sugary spin - think cupcakes, pies, bon bons, cookies, custards, ice cream, tarts, chocolate & such.

Any crafty medium could be used from sewing to painting, crochet to polymer clay, resin to recycling, beading to baking.

A cupcake pincushion?  Layer cake earrings?  Chocolate bar wallet?  A lollipop lamp?  Cherry pie tee?  A creme puff pillow?  Felted fruit salad?  The posssibilities are endless (& delicious).  And what fun entries to see...

4  COOKING / Dessert / My Mid-Century Modern Gingerbread House on: January 02, 2007 12:41:28 PM
Well, even though it wasn't a craftster challenge I was dying to make a modern style gingerbread house this year.  I was inspired by the case study houses of the 50s & 60s & architects like Eichler, Richard Neutra & Craig Ellwood. I kept the back open like a dollhouse so I could craft some edible furniture too. So much fun! Smiley

Here are some detail pics:

And some teasers:

6  CRAFTSTER CRAFT CHALLENGES / Craftster Craft Challenge Theme Ideas, Etc. / Modern 'Cozy' Challenge? on: November 02, 2006 05:23:30 AM
Cozies areen't just for teapots...our modern must-haves need protection too - laptops, cell phones, pda's, ipods, lipsticks, yoga mats - the list could go on & on...
7  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / fire island mermaid on: November 01, 2006 06:17:22 PM
So this is my first post here ever!  This year I made a mermaid costume for my step-daughter who lives on Fire Island.  I bought the nude leotard & the rest I made. The tail portion is 'holographic liquid spandex' *insert bad 80's joke here*, paillettes & silver tulle.  The top was the same spandex turned right side in, pink paillettes & 'seaweed' straps.  Come to find out they don't really make fake seaweed so I had to improvise with some silk ferns from the craft store - snipping & glueing to twine.  I also made her a shell necklace & some starfish/pearl barettes. The best part was the mermaid shawl.  I took an old velvet table runner that was wasting away in my attic, sewed real fishing net to it & hot glued all kinds of 'sealife' on the net - including plastic crabs, real starfish, little rubber goldfish, shells, etc.  I was pleased with the end result as this was the first costume I've made.  Might lend it to a friend for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade next year...
