1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Re: Heart Shrine on: February 19, 2018 12:29:48 PM
kbrison and pottermouth- a few things I've noticed the first time around, and will fix or at least be aware of for the hot glue technique next time

-acrylic paint is fine
-but it's going to take like 5 coats. The first 2 or 3 it's still just streaky marks on the glue. Don't give up!
-the glue takes paint A LOT better with an overloaded foam brush, dabbing down, then trying to use a stroke of any kind with a bristle brush.
-if you're doing a more complicated design, and draw it out in pencil first (or just are bad at freeform, like me) if you miss gluing over any point of it, pencil ALSO takes like 2 or 3 coats before it's not visible. Who would have thought grey pencil could defeat bright colours, but it's true, at least at first.
-glue guns are incredibly uneven. Keeping the exact same pressure on the trigger, I got thick bits and thin bits. The slower you go the better.
-lastly, you can go in and fill the thin parts later, once the glue is cold, but there are tiny crease marks where the new and old glue joins, even once you paint it. So it's better to go slow and get it all the first time, if you can.

Hope you have fun with it! It's definitely something I'll be doing again.  Cheesy
2  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Mermaid Tote on: February 18, 2018 08:16:15 PM
I made this for Onyxnox in the Fairytale swap. I read the Hans Christensen tale a few times, but it doesn't specifically mention what the youngest mermaid looks like, so I went with colours I liked together.

The bag is actually a sea foam green, you can see it in the aura around the mermaid. I did indeed add handles, one I took the picture. And it's a biiig bag, the box you see inside it is a jumbo Rice Krispie box.
3  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: 2018 Annual DeStashAlong Thread on: February 18, 2018 04:31:48 PM
One of the first things I've made this year completely out of stash:

I think my favourite bit is the way I cut the heart mardigras beads up into the balls and the hearts and used them different ways.

mellybelly, I think the polka dots go well with the frogs!

I'm not putting this on the 'occasions' board for Valentine's day, because I hope that it's something that can be up all year. I tried to be relatively generic, but stay on the love theme.

It's my first time experimenting with painting on top of hot glue, and I like the effect. It wouldn't work for deeper shrines, but this one was only about an inch deep, so it's very readable.

The back of the shrine has a little inlay, which I filled with a pretty heart themed paper.

I love the two cows, they're so cute! I really like that you picked odd colours, instead of natural. If you don't want to turn them all into broaches, I bet they'd make cool magnets too.

dfabbric made me the best TM Patches! Either they're machine embroidered, or she's a freakin' witch!

A mask. It also has a nosepeice, but I haven't had the chance to glue them together yet.

Oh dear children, do come in. No harm will happen to you...

Rapunzel Rapunzel, let down your hair! She let her hair fall...

And for my girlfriend's fave story, The White Snake:

I got a pouch from craftylittlemonkey made out of three TM Patches. It's hard to say which side I like better, because on one hand, the quote, but on the other hand, YELLOW!
