6981  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Little Odd Ball Yarn Swap R3 Gallery on: December 31, 2008 10:40:37 AM
Has anybody heard from cheyelizabeth?

I checked in with her (and heard back from her) before the ice/snow/no electricity/no heat/no internet disaster hit me Dec. 12th). But, I haven't heard from her since, so I sent another PM. If I don't hear from her by Friday, I'll just assume that she received from everyone and give those folks their requisite feedback. I know that, due to a work commitment, her internet time was restricted. I'm hoping nothing bad has happened to her since then!
6982  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / Re: 2008 12" Squares ~ NOV on: December 31, 2008 10:34:34 AM
i dunno what color i'm going to use to join them.  i was going to go out to buy some yarn for joining today, but now it's snowing and they haven't really plowed yet, so i probably won't be able to get it today.

all my fillers are 6" squares.  i plan to alternate between 12" squares and two 6" squares.  it's probably going to make joining harder, but we'll see how it goes!

It's snowing here, too, so I'm staying home as well! I would guess that the 6" squares wouldn't make joining much harder, especially if you joined them as a 6" X 12" rectangle. As long as you include the same number of rectangles in each row, it should work out quite nicely. Can't wait to see it Wink

I'm so excited that so many folks will be joining in, especially the new crocheters! I will be finishing up my square tonight, and I'll try to post the pattern as soon as the New Year rolls around... I have a feeling I'll be crocheting as the clock hits midnight Wink

And, as I selected the patterns, I tried to pick patterns that didn't look too difficult, but could still teach me a thing or two. I still call myself a beginner, but I'm probably more of an intermediate now. I'm still a little intimidated by some things, but this CAL has helped to build  my confidence.

They look great, puppy_girl! What color will you use to join them? And, this may seem like a silly question, but did you increase the size of the fillers to 12" (I saw that the 9-patch pattern only makes a 6" square). I'm really curious to see how it will all fit together!

Would this be an appropriate CAL for a beginner to participate in?  I have a teeny bit of experience in knitting and I'm trying to pick up crochet as well.  I think the moral support and accountability would be helpful!   Wink
Squares are a great way to learn crochet. As long as you know some of the basic stitches like chain, sc, dc, then you'll pick the rest up and feel free to ask for help.

I agree! I have learned so much just from making squares in these CALs! I started the January square last night, and so far, it's pretty easy (but looks more complicated than it is, so it's a deceptively impressive looking square to start with Wink ). I think the most confusing part is the beginning, but if you use a stitch marker or two, and follow the directions, it works out just fine Wink And, since I started it after 10 pm, I think someone who is a little less tired than I was should be able to understand it perfectly Grin
6986  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / Re: Sammy the Hedgehog Crochet-along :) on: December 30, 2008 08:36:05 AM
Somewhere, I have a hedgehog body... sounds sinister, but it's purely innocent Wink

I tried to make one for a swap, but couldn't get the hair to work out right, so I tossed the body aside. I really should dig it out and finish it!

Everyone's afghans are wonderful.  After keeping up most of the year, I have now fallen behind and definitely won't finish by the end of the year, especially since I'm making another afghan for the IYP swap and a ton of other things.  But I will finish this one eventually and even if I can't keep up, I will join the 2009 CAL too.  Heck, I even plan on finishing 2007.  Some day.   Grin

Hah! You sound just like me Wink

I'm hoping to do the ones here and both the 12" and 6" ones on ravelry and end up with some kind of babette type blanket.

Now, that's a neat idea! I'd love to do it, too, but, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to pull that off just yet...
6989  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / Re: 2009 12" Squares on: December 29, 2008 11:45:13 AM
I don't have anyone to make an afghan for either, but they are good to have on hand as emergency gifts (or to donate to a charity event, even). I just really like learning new stitches and techniques as I make the squares. I hope you're able to join us- your squares were awesome in the last round!

I hope I can keep up this year!

LOL! Me too! I got stuck at July but I'm still planning to finish. For this round, my goal is to finish the square before I post a pattern so I can post a pic when I put the pattern link up... We'll see how it goes Wink
