9  earth day themed tee to dress recon (inspired by vegbee tute!) in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by katera on: April 22, 2007 07:10:02 AM
when i saw vegbee's t-shirt to dress tute, i knew i wanted to make my daughter a dress for earth day from one of my old environmental tees.  i took a few shortcuts, so it's not as cute, but more instantaneous gratification.  Smiley  (and thanks, vegbee, for the tute and all your inspired creations)  Smiley

started with a HUGE old tshirt (with a endangered turtle iron-on i did years ago) and a swing top she's outgrown (size 24 mo) that was too stained to sell at the consignment store.

used an existing dress that fits her ok as the basic template.  you can see how ridiculously big the tee is here, it was a 'one size fits all'.  i wanted a cap sleeve effect, so i measured about an inch and a half from the shoulder seam of the template dress at the top and tapered from there to the armpit seam at the bottom of the sleeve.

so, shortcut from vegbee's tute #1 - leave in original neck.  it's a little big, but her head is too.  heh.  Smiley  shortcut #2, no set in sleeves, extend the shoulder for a cap sleeve effect and use the binding from the armholes on the too-small shirt to finish.  her arms are still plenty skinny for the little armholes.  (this was actually the part that took the longest, using a seam ripper to take off the armhole binding from the tiny shirt).  shortcut #3 - using existing ruffle from shirt instead of making one.  i hate gathering almost as much as setting sleeves, so i made the bottom of the dress small enough to use the ruffle i cut off of the tiny shirt.

here's an action shot, she's wiggling to make the dress swing back and forth.

the tiny shirt had bugs embroidered on it, i'm thinking about making her a tiny bag so she has a whole eco-themed outfit.  Smiley
hope you all like it, and happy earth day!  Smiley

10  Re: Fill-a-Box Supply Swap 4 (aka: The Spring Cleaning Fill-a-Box Swap) in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by katera on: April 21, 2007 02:02:01 PM
that's me!  i think i have my 3 year old distracted long enough that i can post pics!
i received yesterday from jloveg and honestly, i can see why the post office wouldn't let you pay the flat rate!  look at the box (before i opened) compared to an empty one!

inside was so much stuff!  she even vacuum sealed some fabric in food packaging stuff so it would take less room!  here's the vacuum pack before opening -

all together, there were NINE different fabrics, i haven't measured the yardage, but it has to be at least ten yards total!  i am so spoiled, thank you so much!

here's a closeup of the other goodies, two huge spools of green and blue thread, and a GINORMOUS one of black!  the black is nymo thread, which is what i use for beading!  perfect!  i will never have to buy black thread again!  EVER!  Smiley  plus a package of zippers, fabric crayons, and a box full of cute little trims and notions!  i'm hiding this from my daughter, all the stuff is perfect for her!

thank you SO much for everything!

i also sent to jloveg today, and discovered when i got there i had the priority mail box without the flat rate red circle - same size, but they wouldn't give me the flat rate either unless i went home and repacked.  after standing in line for 20 minutes with a toddler, i just paid the extra!  so, lesson learned for me!  Sad
