1  Re: Post your CRAFTY Tattoos! in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by aphrasdaughter on: January 31, 2010 09:36:21 PM

My sewing fairy.  The idea came to me as I was falling asleep. I'd had the fairy done in college, and almost 10 years later, was thinking about doing a cover-up.  I woke up from a doze thinking, "Aha! She should be holding a button! (before it was sort of an orb-thing) And sitting on a spool!" and three days later, she was made eversomuch more beautiful and relevant. The artist who added the spool and button touched her up a little, but I like that she seems so ephemeral compared to the shiny newness of the spool.  Let's pretend I did that on purpose, k?

Lots of gorgeousness today!  I finally got a working camera, so here's my contribution:

Appalachia.  Merino, spun thick and thin and plied with purple thread.  Something ridic like 400 yards.  Sooooo much yarn.

Dottie.  Hand-dyed, hand-carded, hand-everythinged.  BFL, angelina, satin scraps and locks from some sort of sheep I can't remember.

This shows the sparkle a little better.  The colors are off in the pic, I need to figure out this newfangled camera-ness.  IRL, it's a sparkly mix of deep reds, pinks and purples.

Wow, there is some really gorgeous work on here.  Here's my addition; the story is that I got the first one when I was 18 and not very assertive, so it wasn't exactly what I had wanted.  It had gotten a little faded and just, kinda "eh".  Here's the pic right before I had it added to:

Now, 8 years later, I was wanting something that would make my little fairy more representative of who I am now.  As I was falling asleep one night, I had this flash of inspiration and knew exactly what I wanted done:

(Sorry for the mirror-image pic, it's actually on my left shoulder.  This was the day after, so it's still kinda swollen.)
It took about 2 hours, b/c the artist (the awesome Lea at Bethesda Tattoo Company) did a little bit over the old tattoo to make them go better together.  Now I loff it totally.

4  Re: Show off your dorm room! in Interior Decorating: Completed Projects by aphrasdaughter on: September 09, 2008 11:50:13 AM
Weirdly, I just found some pics of my senior year dorm room (I graduated in '04).  I'm not sure why I took these, as it's messy as all get out, so I clearly wasn't showing off.  Oh well, ignore the mess, enjoy the awesomeness.

This was a basement room, which sucked for lighting, but it was a quad and we had it as a double, so there was a ridiculous amount of room.  Here's my (full size!) bed, which I put in this weird nook in the corner.  I made curtains and (you can't quite see it in the picture) re-purposed a strange wood-shop looking bookcase I found in the storage room as a headboard.  It's also up on a gajillion cinderblocks, and had an acre of storage underneath that I covered with more curtains.

This is our couch, which we got from the Habitat for Humanity store for 5 bucks.  Since it looked like someone had possibly a) died on it. b) been lit on fire on it. c) had that fire doused with bleach, we decided to recover it.  Three ladies and a staple-hammer later, and there was this.  We also decoupaged a shiny shiny $3 coffee table which is not in the photo for some reason.

This is my desk area, which I only put in to show the fabulous re-purposed card catalog we used as a bar/wine rack.  I still have this, 4 moves and three cities later.  My roommate's desk and loft was to the right.  Seriously, enormous room.

Last is a shot of my closet (yes, just mine, my roommate's is on the left side of the picture) that was so huge I kept my clothes in half and put a sewing table in the other half for a permanent craft area.  There was an outlet in there and everything.

Thanks for letting me reminisce!

Hey wonderful spinning-type people!  I've been lurking for many a Friday, and I finally got my camera in order, so here's some recent spinning/dyeing stuff.  (Sorry I still have to post links, being a n00b has its downsides.)
This is the free mystery wool that came with my shiny new Baynes ST.  It's a lovely hunter green with different colored accents.  It's a little thick and thin b/c I was breaking in the wheel with it.

Levi: I bought this wool at MD Sheep and Wool last year; i don't remember what kind it is, but it's super soft and totally looks like vintage jeans in person.
I did my first dyeing experiments on my handspun a couple of weeks ago.  This is Fuego, a fiery mix of cherry and tangerine
And Loop, that I swear looks like Froot Loops in person.  The wool for this and Fuego is Leicester that I got at the last MD Sheep and Wool, and is my first wheel-spun thing ever.  There's some thrift-store yarn from the same dye lot for comparison

And I'm plying my last bobbin of this shiny shiny wool/soysilk blend.  I lurve this fiber.  Like, my gf should start to worry.

That's it for now.  I've gotten a second wheel and gone a bit dye-crazy, so hopefully I'll have more for next week.  Thanks!
