11  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Discussion and Questions / Can anyone tell me what this Harry Potter graphic is? on: November 03, 2007 03:06:09 PM
I was thinking of recreating this messenger bag for my sister for Christmas but I'm not sure what this graphic is:

If anyone could find a clearer picture of it I'd be grateful!!

12  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / Painting a rug? on: October 29, 2007 02:37:13 AM
I have this rug from IKEA that I think would be great to have in different areas around the house - the loop/pile makes it a good candidate to join multiple rugs into larger ones without being too noticeable.

ButI'd like to paint them (they don't come in the color(s) I want). I'm  thinking fabric paint, I'm not planning on going with a pattern just an all-over new color.  Is there another medium I should consider?  Hmmm, what about RIT dye in a spray bottle?

Would I then need to seal them somehow?  Maybe heat set them in the dryer?  Or maybe some of the spray you can use on furniture?  I haven't had much experience with fabric paints or dyes...

13  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / A new purse, mini messenger style... on: October 18, 2007 06:37:13 PM
Made this one today, very simple - no interior pockets or anything.  This is my absolute favorite fabric (this week)...

Finished size is about 7.5 x 9.5

Thanks for looking!!

**Sorry for the large pics - I've tried to resize!**
14  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Purse templates! on: October 18, 2007 06:01:55 PM
So I love sewing purses but I HATE CUTTING the fabric - even with a rotary cutter and quilting ruler I can't cut straight lines to save my life...

So I've been using templates I made out of pizza boxes, I'd have to trace the shape, get out the ruler and cut...  BUT NOW...

I went to Lowe's and had 1 sheet of plexiglass (18" x 24" - about $8) cut into templates!  I had 3 different sizes made (10 x 13, 6x13, 8.5x11) and had the left over cut into squares - 6x6, 5x5, and 3.5x3.5.

Now I just put the template (that I can see my pattern through) on the fabric, whip out my rotary cutter and WHALA!!

Hope this helps someone!!

15  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Ribbon Tees - anyone know how?? on: October 11, 2007 08:37:45 AM
I think these are cute - with the wide strip of ribbon across the front of a basic T.

Has anyone made these?  Do you open the side seams to enclose the ribbon ends?  Any other tips?

16  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Old shirt = new bag #2! on: October 04, 2007 08:24:39 PM
Another one of my summer shirts that didn't leave the drawer this year...

I even used the tie - for the closure flap.

Inside (lined with felt because I had some!)

I also made a small snap wallet to go inside - you can see the matching fabric on this picture.

I actually winged this one - instead of having to run over to the computer every few minutes to see what the next step was!

Thanks for peeking!
17  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Old shirt = new bag! on: October 02, 2007 07:14:29 PM
This was one of my favorite summer shirts that just never made it on this summer, so it was in the Goodwill pile Smiley

I used this tutorial:  http://www.supereggplant.com/archives/000216.html  (only because I couldn't figure out how to start the Jordy tutorial).

First a shirt:

Now a bag!

Close up (I even used the decorative button from the front of the shirt!)

Since the fabric was so flimsy/stretchy I lined it with a brown felt - the next time around I'll use interfacing.

Thanks for looking!
18  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Jordy Bag tutorial - what am I missing? on: October 02, 2007 02:45:37 AM
Can anyone who has successfully done a Jordy bag tell me the cutting directions?  I'm assuming they are in the 1st picture (that is missing) - and I can't figure out what the square cutouts are for?  I've been admiring these bags but can't even get started on one!

19  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Can we talk fabrics? on: September 26, 2007 01:33:21 PM
I really want to make some of the cute skirts and especially the peasant tops I've seen around.

What's your favorite fabric for shirts?  Do I just purchase cotton, like the quilting stuff?  Does it soften up after washing?  Or should I stick to knits?  Are they harder to sew?

Thanks for your suggestions!
20  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Looking for ruffled jean insert help! on: September 25, 2007 09:11:30 PM
Can anyone point me to a tutorial (or explain how) to get the triangular shaped fabric/ruffles into jeans?  I'm assuming you open the seam up to about the knee, but can't get any further than that...   I'll try and find a picture if it's not clear what I'm asking... Thanks!
