11  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Kitty Couture, aka The Cat's Meow, aka Simplicity 3875 on: May 03, 2007 08:22:43 AM
I finished a dress from a pattern! This pattern was relatively easy to follow. I had a bit of trouble with the back facing, so I just winged it, and it turned out ok. I also had a little trouble with the sleeves, but that was just because I wasn't thinking.

Anyway, here you go. I call this Kitty couture or The cat's meow because of the fabric I used. REALLY cute black with white outlines of cats and white with black "meow"s all over it:

First, the fabric and pattern "before":

Next, the front of the dress (it comes just to my knees, I tried to get a full body shot, but I'm having trouble finding the right placement for my camera...it's hard to take pictures of yourself!):

..and the back. The white around the midriff in the front comes around and ties in the back of the dress.

I LOVE IT! This pattern is highly recommended to any beginners out there. I SUCK at following patterns, but this was pretty easy.

EDIT: The only thing I would suggest if you are going to make this pattern is if you have a large chest, you might want to go up a size on the bodice area. I'm...blessed...in that area and the only problem I have is that my chest doesn't exactly fit in the allotted areas, making the dress not fit as snugly around the midriff area.
12  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / back facing!? Help, please! on: May 03, 2007 05:46:21 AM
So I'm working on a dress: Simplicity 3875 and it is going well, but I'm so unclear about how to do the back facing. Here is a picture of what I have so far:

So, the back upper edge of the neck is a raw edge, so I need back facing. Here is what the instructions say:

7. Fold back facing in half, lengthwise, with WRONG sides together, matching small dots, press (got it)

8. On OUTSIDE, pin back facing to back neck edge (over front), havign raw edges even. Stitch along 3/8" seam, being careful not to catch in finished edges of band. Trim back neck seam and corners. clip curves.

9. Turn facing to INSIDE; press, pressing shoulder seams toward back. Baste close to inner edge of facing. On OUTSIDE, top stitch as basted.

...so, could someone explain steps 8 and 9 to me, as you would to a small child? For some reason, I'm just not getting it. I thought if I just tried it, it might make more sense, but I'm confused as to what the outside and the inside are and I just don't know how to do this! I'm so close to finishing, and the dress looks SO GOOD. I don't want this issue to hold me back from finishing.

Thanks in advance!
13  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Spring Skirt #2 on: May 02, 2007 03:43:46 PM
This is my second spring skirt, made without a pattern.

I think the color isn't true to life, I think it might be more purple than it looks.
14  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Baby food jar candle holders! on: April 24, 2007 06:59:41 PM
So, after the whole pet-food recall scare, I started feeding my precious kitties meat baby food. Ok, ok...I realize that I'm a crazy cat lady, let's move on to the crafts Smiley

So, I ended up with about a million baby food jars and I had no idea what to do with them. So, today I took about 15 minutes, glued on some various odds and ends that I had lying around and while they don't look that great just lying around, once they are lit, they look pretty amazing:

This was literally one of the easiest things ever. I glued buttons/beads around the top of the first two, glued and wrapped some sparkly yarn around the third one and just painted on some glitter onto the fourth one. I did find out that there are two types of jars, one has a wider mouth than the other. The jars with the narrower mouths, I had to take the votive out of the little metal thing before I put it into the jar, but I'm not too worried about the jars filling up with wax, considering I have about 50 more empty jars lying around. I'm going to make some more with beads all over them. I just need to get some more beads!

15  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / A-line summery skirt: My first sewn garment! on: April 10, 2007 02:36:56 PM
I wanted a new skirt for summer, but I couldn't find just what I was looking for, so I decided to make my own! I got the brown fabric on sale at JoAnn's (on sale!) for $3/yd. I'm sorry for a non-modeled photo, but I haven't shaved my legs for a while, so I wasn't in the mood.

I have the side of the skirt folded over, so it is actually just an a-line skirt. The bow is on the side of the skirt. I used an elastic waistband (for comfort's sake) and it comes just below my knees.

I made this hat as a grab bag gift for my Stitch N Bitch Superbowl/V-day party today:

Pooh is not only a great model, but he is also a perfect hat blocker Smiley. Here is the pattern:

I'm adding more flowers as we speak.

19  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Toy Knitting Machine.... on: December 18, 2006 02:53:57 PM
I'm a hand knitter, but I was at the thrift store today and there was a 'Barbie Knit Hits Fashion Maker' for $1....so I picked it up. It is the coolest thing ever. I'm so excited about it. You can make narrow (but as long as you want) tubes and narrow panels as well. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, maybe long skinny tube scarves, but I'm excited nonetheless.

Please keep THIS thread on the topic of discussing the actual machines, how they compare, etc., and discuss finished objects or objects in progress on the knitalong thread!
20  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Veronica Mars Swap? on: December 11, 2006 06:53:37 AM
I'm looking to organize my first swap after Christmas, so I'm sending out feelers for VM fans who would like to craft their fandom for a Swap!

Love Veronica's messenger bag from S1? Been dying for the "Moosetastic!" t-shirt she wore this season? How about some Mars Investigation stationary or a Hearst College sweatshirt?

I would really like to have a long crafting period so that we can make one LARGE item (i.e., something that takes a lot of effort) and one small item (i.e., something that you can make in an evening or a couple of hours).

Is anyone interested in this?
