1  COOKING / Dessert / Glacier cake with penguins & a jelly lake <3 on: October 29, 2010 11:34:25 AM
For a work friends birthday  Grin

White choc mud base, stacked brownie glaciers, blueberry jelly lake!

Noone ate it of course- this seems to be my new curse! Its like the 3rd time in a row noone has even cut it and Ive had to throw the whole thing away. It makes me sad inside >_< People use that "too cute to eat" excuse, but man I am SO sick of hearing that! I don't spend days and nights making ridic cakes and giving myself ridiculous baking injuries (my own fault) to just throw them away. *Sigh* I liked it though..
2  COOKING / Dessert / Vegan Chocolate Wedding cake & cupcakes! on: October 02, 2010 08:49:35 AM
My adorable straight edge vegan friends got married yesterday, I made their cake and cupcakes Smiley I was really happy with how they came out, Im not overly confident with fondant, regardless how many times I try. This time I got it on the FOURTH go, hehe!

And look at the adorable topper I bought them! Traditional ceramic, but he girl is pinching the boys bum when you look at it from behind Wink

They loved them, but hardly ANYONE ate any, that always seems to happen to me!
3  COOKING / Dessert / MUSTACHE CAKES! Yes, really. on: September 30, 2010 06:03:48 AM
It was my awesome friends 21st the other week- he has an epic beard and twirly mustache that he waxes into shape- it's probably his best feature, so for his birthday cakes?

Best of all, they are vegan!
4  COOKING / Dessert / Rainbow cake, Breakfast cupcake & Little Green Men cupcakes! on: September 30, 2010 05:54:13 AM
It was my besties birthday on Monday, and being the spoilt brat he is, I decided he needed LOTS of birthday cakes. We had a lovely big picnic with our friend and everyone brought great stuff along. I was, of course, in charge of desserts!

I started the day first up with leaving a single cupcake outside his house in the morning. I wrapped it in a little clear cube & tied a single helium balloon to it, then texted him that his birthday breakfast awaited him outside!

For entrees at the picnic, I made him some Little Green Men cupcakes!

And for the big finale, I tried to do a How to Train your Dragon cake. I wasn't happy with how Toothless came out, and come 10pm I decided I had better give up and do something else. I didn't have any fondant left so the first thing that came to mind was a rainbow layer cake! I had been wanting to try one for a while, so why not!

My lovely husband, showcasing the massively tall cake!

I used a standard butter cake recipe, and buttercream icing. And it was diviiinnneee!
5  COOKING / Dessert / A very Wu-Tang Wedding/Birthday. on: July 31, 2010 08:28:30 AM
Ok, so this is kind of an in-joke, but my manager, who's name is Portia, is completely in love with RZA, ex-Wu-Tang member. Like, to the point where we all call her PZA.

A few months back she mentioned in a conversation "If I was ever gonna get married now it would have to be to RZA!" I instantly decided for her upcoming birthday that we would make her a wedding cake for her & RZA's make-believe nuptials.

And so we did..I enlisted the help of my work baking buddy, he made the cakes and helped cover them, I designed & decorated it and make the toppers!

And before I post pics, yes, I am quite aware it looks nothing like RZA..he was tough to capture Roll Eyes

Note the gold Wu-Tang symbols which went all the way around the cake  Cheesy

It looks little, maybe because the toppers were so big- but it was actually pretty huge- it took 3 days for everyone at my work to get through- and we usually polish stuff off within the hour!

The fondant wasn't perfect- but I'm trying to improve that and get a bit of practice in- Ive got a few wedding cakes to make for friends later in the year. Anyone have any tips for smooth fondant? The part I have the most trouble with is it sticking to my rolling pin or falling apart and tearing when I lift it to put over the cake, gah!

Anyway, it was fun to make- and her reaction was priceless- it was a mixture of laughter and "OHMYGOD!" And she got what it was straight away. She texted pictures to her sister & got me to email her my photos, and said it was the most thoughtful present she's ever gotten, so that was lovely to hear, and made it totally worth it!   Grin
6  COOKING / Dessert / Dinosaur Cookies & Cakes! on: July 10, 2010 08:45:42 AM
A friend from work is leaving for another state, so what better reason to throw a..errrr..dinosaur party!

So we watched The Land Before Time & all the Jurassic Park movies, and ate these!

My first attempt at making sugar cookies (They're not big in Aus like they are in the US), they're not perfect, and I overcooked them a little and had to compensate by drowning them in icing, but they were cute and tasty enough!

Pretty colourful cupcakes! Note the teeny green T-rex sprinkles!

7  COOKING / Dessert / Baby Shower Goodies! on: July 10, 2010 08:38:28 AM
Today was my Sister-in-laws baby shower! I was in charge of what I do best, the sweet stuff!

Teensy Baby cupcakes..with doodles!

Sugar cookies, chocolate-dipped meringues & Brownies!

My magical balls of make believe! (Oreo truffle type things)

The whole table before anyone else added their stuff!

I posted about the invites & bunting in the Holidays & Occassions forum Smiley
8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Baby Boy Invitations & Paper Bunting <3 on: July 10, 2010 08:30:51 AM
It was my sister-in-laws baby shower this afternoon, which I did most of the planning and baking for!

I was really happy with how the invites came out, and I made some cute paper bunting to hang around the place  Smiley

I really loved these little bibs I found- I punched flowery shapes from blue card and used them to seal the invitations.

I looked everywhere to find suitable scrapbooking paper to make the bunting, and eventually realised I could use wrapping paper! I got a bunch of cheap sheets from the $2 shop and they turned out quite lovely. I made tons of these, and used the scraps of paper to make little flags and put them on toothpicks to stick into some of the food!

And here's a shot of the whole table before anyone else added their stuff- I'll post close ups of the food in the appropriate forum!

9  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Felt Sammich anyone? on: June 12, 2010 03:29:38 AM
I know it's been done..but it was funny, cos I had a friend stay over and told her I made her a packed lunch for work the next day..disguised it in a ziplock bag and paper bag- hope she didn't get too hungry. Heheeeee. I'm evil.

10  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Couple of doodles I like. on: June 12, 2010 03:26:33 AM
I don't consider myself an artist by any means but I do occassionally like to fiddle around. These are a couple of sketches I quite liked (rare for me!)
