271  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Pants recon : ) on: February 06, 2007 08:56:07 AM
That's excellent!  I've seen people do stripes down the side before to make flares, but I was always a bootleg girl and these look so much more punk.  For the criss cross across the front of the leg, did you cut out the material sections from the black pants or did you just sew those as decoration on top of the fabric?
272  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Thread Tension Disc? on: February 05, 2007 01:21:21 PM
Hello, All.  I'm a newbie to the sewing machine and I'm having problems with my new Singer.  It's the Singer curse!  The stitches on the underside are loose and sloppy.  I called the Singer hotline and they walked me through rethreading the machine and the bobbin, changing the needle, blowing out the thread tension disc with compressed air, and playing with the thread tension dials.  No use.  The stitches are still loose.  The woman finally told me to take it to a store.  Now, my fear is that I'll take it to the store and they'll charge me as much to look at it as it cost to buy the machine.  Any advice?
273  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Sew U book: thoughts? on: February 05, 2007 01:14:52 PM
Hey.  I've read the "Sew-U" book.  Personally, I would recommend "Sew Subversive" by Melissa Rannels if you're looking for beginners tips.  It gives a lot of practical information about using a sewing machine and altering clothes and DIY sewing projects.  Wendy's book is more about creating and altering basic sewing patterns.

Google Goldfinger's "January."  It mentions a few of the months.

Those are excellent.  Did you use a pattern?

No kidding!  The blue looks cute on you though.  Your own custom hoodie!

That's so cute!  It's like the Emily hoodie, but without having to pay like $8,000 on eBay.  I love it!

The zipper doesn't look that bad.  Did you press the burlap seams forward to cover the zipper?

I love it!  I want to go out and buy this pattern right away.

You said the sizing in the bust had to be adjusted, but overall, do you think the sizing is correct?

That's excellent!  I wonder if it'd work with fuzzy nap felt (since the Denver fabric isn't available)...

I never would have thought of using towels as scrap fabric.  Two questions:
a) Does the material unravel, or is it staying put after you've braided it?
b) How thin did you cut the strips?
