21  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: boyfriend questions... on: December 24, 2006 08:30:25 PM
okay, I ended up doing the boring thing because the stuff didn't work so much as stocking stuffers, so i just wrapped them all up separately and in a box.

I said explicitly that I had spoken to him, and that he nor his family found it at all offensive. they thought it was funny. Plus, not all jewish people are like you, I'm sorry. He liked the idea and thought it was funny. I got Hannukah presents from him, and he got Christmas presents from me. no big deal, that's just what we did.
and also
His family must be on the relaxed side of reform or reconstruction. Those of us who really practice Judaism would totally not be cool with a stocking for the record...
um. thanks for saying that he doesn't "really practice Judaism"  sorry, but that was just rude. who are you to say that reformed or relaxed jewish people aren't jews. That's like saying all jews who don't practice exactly what the Torah says aren't actually jews.

Gah. some people just don't understand that something like that as a joke isn't offensive and that they need to respect other people if they expect to be respected. I mean really. who asked you?

thanks mucho for your ideas! i guess i should have mentioned that i already had the conversation where i was like "jeez you've never had a stocking? wtf i'm making you one." and he was like "okay cool." his family's verrrryyy laid back so no one's gonna get offended.

yeah one of the gifts i was already thinking about making him was a snakes on a shirt shirt and maybe something else cuz i have some cheap tshirts in his size already

I'm not sure if this goes here, but i can't think of a better place.

So my boyfriend is Jewish and has thus never celebrated Christmas.  Which, I eventually realized, means he has never gotten a stocking.  I'm not religious but stockings are awesome. So I wanted to make him one and stuff it full of good stuff-- I have a bunch of ideas of what to put in it but I really want to make the actual stocking and I'd prefer if it weren't super Christmas-y.  Like, blue or red or black or something, not red and green and uber-festive looking. I don't want to scare him lol. So, I'd kind of like your advice on what it should be.  I can crochet but not very proficiently, and knit but i've only ever done scarves.  Sewing would be very easy, and I can stencil and do cool stuff like that. Not the best at embroidery i'm afraid, probably because I'm impatient, but i can do quick-ish simpl-ish stuff pretty well.  I was thinking maybe like a band-oriented one maybe?  Or something plain-ish but cool.  Any ideas are welcome

-he likes tons of music but marilyn manson, nine inch nails, nirvana, led zeppelin, pink floyd, grateful dead, stuff like that in particular
-he's a geek-- so star wars, nintendo, computer stuff, 1337, etc. is all good.
-he has two bookcases entirely filled with marvel comics. the essentials. oh yes. i love it.
-we both adore san francisco and sf stuff has all kinds of inside joke meaning for us so that's cool too

also, he's soon to be 15 and i am 15 and our parents would definitely be seeing the stocking so nothing y'know. super-mature. they're fine with most stuff though.

and if any cool ideas come to you as to what to put inside of this stocking, i would be very grateful if you shared

that's about it i guess, thanks in advance for any and all ideas! Grin
