1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Paypal and Other Shopping Carts on: June 10, 2006 08:20:53 AM

I decided to try a shopping cart other than Mals, because I wanted one that would allow me to control quantities and inventory etc.  So I went with Zencart which says:

" BEFORE YOU PROCEED, make sure you have access to a MySQL database, and username/password to that database. You may need to create the database using your webhosting account's control panel. Contact your webhosting company for assistance. Zen Cart cannot create the database for you.

(You need the following permissions on your MySQL user: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, ALTER, INDEX, DROP)"

I'm really knew to all of this.  I have an account with godaddy.com and know I can access the ftp part, but I have no clue what mySQL is.  Does anone know if I actually have it or how to set it up if it needs setting up?

Godaddy does offer MySQL databases. I am not familiar with their hosting, but poke around and you should be able to create one somewhere. You'll create a database name, then a user and password for that database, and you'll need to change the permissions as well. You'll need all this information to use Zencart.

Suggestion: Zen can be quite tricky to install. If you're stuck on the first part, you'll probably encounter some other problems along the way. I'd say I know what I'm doing and I wouldn't even attempt to install it. What you may want to do is find a new host that offers a one-click installation, such as Dreamhost, so you do not have to deal with any of the installation complications on your own.

Best of luck. Wink
2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: domain name and web hosting? advice please! on: June 10, 2006 08:09:32 AM
Just an Update:  (for some reason this thread is sticky so it stays at the top of the board, which is unfortunate because it is actually a very old question that is quite outdated at the moment!)

My business has come quite a long ways since I first posted that question. I now consider it an actual business (legal with all necessary licenses) and my near-full time job instead of just a hobby. I have been using lindsaydesigns.net without issue for the past year and a half. Recently, lindsaydesigns.com became available and I was able to purchase that. I am in the process of switching over to a new shopping cart, a new host, and this new .com domain. I did all the design, and am very happy with the overall look and feel of the site (it's quite a far cry from my original bravenet site!)

As a business - I am on my way to being able to live off of the income, which is my ultimate goal. I have put a lot of time and money into my business and feel it is starting to pay off.

I appreciate all of your comments and input, and best of luck to you all! Smiley

Here's a big THANK YOU to Babs [teamwang]... my lovely swap angel. Smiley

Just look at these goodies!

It was well worth the wait! Thank you! Smiley

(btw the Jellyfish cat toy is ingenious. My cat just loves it... that's why it's just a bit 'distressed' in the photo.)

I mailed mine out last week. Smiley I'm really happy with how it came out... I've been waiting for a reason to use this fabric for ages!! I sure hope she likes it... or at least her cats do!

Can't wait to see everyone else's loot!
5  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: domain name and web hosting? advice please! on: July 19, 2005 02:58:57 PM
Sure been a while since I posted this. And boy, have I learned a lot.

You can see my current website here: http://www.lindsaydesigns.net.

I ended up going with ixwebhosting.com.... though I am considering changing once my contract expires in October. I designed the whole site myself using adobe GoLive, and uploaded it to my server. I originally chose ix because of the templates - they are quite a bit better and more customizable (colors, at least) than other templates. It's nice to know some html to add more than just text to them, but overall they're pretty easy to use for beginners. Ix also has a load of features, including a mailing list and comes with oscommerce already installed (though I am baffled by it and don't have the time to learn it).

I want to switch hosts... well... because there are cheaper plans out there with just as many, and even better features. Plus I find my email goes down more than I'd like it to. I'm sure email goes down on all hosts, but it's an excuse to change.

I plan on switching to either www.fatcow.com or www.totalchoicehosting.com. Both are very affordable, have great features, and plenty of bandwidth. I managed to purchase the lindsaydesigns.com domain name, and will eventually make that my primary domain (right now it redirects you to my .net site).

For beginners looking to set up a very basic site, I'd recommend www.godaddy.com. You can get a plan there for about $4 a month... great for starting out until you know more what your site needs in the way of features/bandwidth. There are tons of add ons as well, which will cost you, but will also make setting up your site much easier.
6  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Re: Ribbon & Felt Flower Pin Cushion on: June 01, 2005 08:32:06 AM
It's basically just a cylinder of ribbon with felt circles on top and bottom. I would have liked to fill it with sand or something to keep the needles sharp - but all I had was fiberfill.

I've been so busy that I don't know if I'll have time to start making more of these. Too bad, though, I love mine. Smiley So cute.

Thanks everyone!

I got my wallet yesterday from hdoglovesyou. Pink gingham and gray... with a cute little dead kitty applique on the front. Smiley It is very cute. My living gray kitty doesn't quite think the same though... haha.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure if I'll end up selling them - it took me close to 1 1/2 hours to make, and for $5-$8 it's not quite worth it to me. I had to hand sew it all, which is a pain. Oh well. At least I have a cute new pincushion. Smiley
