261  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / where to find printed canvas fabric on: June 09, 2006 10:30:09 AM
I've been making bags out of canvas or canvas-like material (i.e. duck cloth, decorator fabric) because I hate the way interfacing crinkles.  But I am having a hard time finding places to buy printed canvas.

I've been getting fabric from JoAnn's and Hancock's but they don't get new stuff in often enough.  I have scoured the internet searching for PRINTED canvas and not the plain but the only place I found was somewhere in China that prints canvas for you and I don't like to mass produce the same bag.  I like to make few-of-a-kind bags.

So anyway, anyone know of a place where I could find something like that?  I wouldn't mind if it was even canvas-like fabric.  I just need something of that weight and with cool prints.  Nothing old lady-ish, if you know what I mean.

oh these are super cute!!! i love it when people come up with different patterns other than the basic tote.  don't you find it costly to add so much hardware.  i know it really adds a professional touch but i always find that i have to up the cost of the bag when i use a lot of it.

Great job!  I love it!

I TiVo "Sew Much More" on the DIY network and on Tuesday she made a shoulder bag with cargo pockets.

I just turned it on after work today.  I like watching this show because although, they make some pretty goofy things, I pick up some great sewing tips!!

They also post directions on their web page.  Which is my reason for posting this! There is a tutorial for making cargo pockets!! WOO WHOO!!

wow! thankyou so much!  i'll have to check it out.  maybe i'll learn something about how to do them easier or faster.  i do tend to do things the hard way.  i guess because my dad always taught us to never take short cuts and to be very thourough.

thanks again!

oh WOW!!!!!! any chance of a tutorial? or just a tute for the pockets??? preeeettttty please i would love you forever!!!!

I'm so sorry but if I were to put up a tutorial it would be a million pages long.  I really do have a hard time with them and because of them it takes about 5 hours to make the bag. (I timed it the other day)  I appreciate the comments though!

oh my god... that bag is EXACTLY what i tried to make. i LOVE IT. i spent like 3 days searching online to figure out how to do those cargo pockets and finally i just went to walmart and found a purse there with the pockets that i wanted and studied them and just copied them. they really are a pain in the ***!!!!!! i hated doing them! the pockets took longer than the rest of the purse! and in the end, i accidently made my purse WAAAY too big, so i was mad lol. but i LOVE yours. those are ADORABLE

I'm glad that someone feels me on the pockets!!!  They are super time consuming and aside from the additional hardware I sometimes use, they are what I base my price on.  But then again, I don't see many bags like it.  I wish I could find a way to do them quicker and easier.  But that's a part of sewing.  You learn as you go!

It has taken me a year or two to come up with the perfect bag.  For awhile I have been making totes and spicing them up in different ways but I have finally come up with a pattern that I absolutely love.

The last photo is of one of my first bags of this style.  I started out making flat patch pockets with flaps and then I figured out how to make a cargo pocket.  I think this is what is so time consuming about the bag.

I use either canvas or strong upholstery fabric to construct the outside, handles and bias tape and whatever is around that matches for the lining.  There is one large compartment in the middle and two smaller compartments either side (where the straps are).  Then I have 4 cargo pockets (2 on the front and 2 on the sides).  I usually use magnetic snaps for the middle closure, regular snaps on the side compartments and velcro for the flap pockets.  The bag measures 11" H x 10" W x 4" D.

I'm on myspace and I wrote a blog to show my friends the picks and all of a sudden I was selling them like crazy and getting requests to make more.

This is my passion, I would love to know what everyone thinks!

*To answer some questions...

The cargo pockets were a pain in the you know what.... so I don't know how I can begin to describe how to make them.  I can tell you that I lined them first and then attached all the pieces together.

I will take some pictures of the inside soon and post them for those who are curious.

Thank you everyone who commented.  It's nice to be appreciated.  Especially when my whole heart goes into making them.  It truly is my passion and I now know what it means when they say, "There is love in every stitch"

The top of the bag is binded using the same fabric the bag was made out of.  I made the binding myself using only an iron to fold it.  I still consider myself an ameture, so I don't use any special tools.  But if anyone has any suggestions that could cut down production time, that would be great!
