1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Problem with Fricke thumbscrew on: March 15, 2007 06:54:18 AM
Anybody out there in Frickeland have this problem? My thumbscrew gets loose. Or it'll seem tight but the flyer will still slip off sometimes. I was told there's a flat area on the flyer shaft that you screw the thumbscrew against to secure the flyer. I see this. And I put it there and it still MOVES... what gives?
2  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday 12/29 on: December 29, 2006 05:10:05 AM
Oh wow, I'm the first to start the topic!? Yay! So, without further adieu...

the reddish on the right became:

Some SheepshedStudio mill ends I got a while back. I used 3 different Kool Aid colors, though at the moment the flavors elude me. I'm sure I can reproduce something similar.

The yarn's a thick-n-thin type yarn, going from bulky to about sport weight. Not sure what it'll be..
3  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Problem with using Paypal with SheepShedStudio on: August 29, 2006 05:49:29 PM
Ok I've finally gotten around to ordering from the Sheepshedstudio, home of the famous Brown Sheep mill end rovings.. and when I click on Pay with Paypal it takes me to paypal where I have to log in.. Then um... there's no reference to who I'm paying? How am I supposed to pay this???
4  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Spindle weight on: July 25, 2006 10:04:14 AM
The other day I made a CD spindle and weighted it with some washers... How heavy a spindle does one NEED to spin thicker yarns?? This one weighs in at about 2 oz. I have some that are 2.2 oz and I can't spin thick on them either. Funny how we spend so much time trying to spin thin and then can't seem to go back the other way.
5  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Harrisville problems on: July 23, 2006 05:16:38 PM
I feel like a complete idiot. I just picked up what I thought was a major fiber score.  I bought 8 oz of Harrisville fleece is a most amazing blue. I'm thinking it's already ready to spin. I get home.. I try to start spinning and it's breaking off in little bits. I've spun carded fiber before and it was nothing like this. It wasn't Harrisville but it was still not a Top, either.  I'm ready to take it back to the place I got it and hopefully get my money back. Or would buying some dog brushes help me sort this mess out?

Maybe because it's a short staple fiber I'm spinning it wrong? I only have spindles..  Help!!

Woohoo! I guess I should start it off. This is some Columbia roving I Kool Aid/RIT dyed about two weeks ago. Took me about a week and a half to spin it up into tiny singles. I've only managed to ply some of it, and the rest will be plied later today. It varies from laceweight to fingering, with some thicker areas every so often. My first skein of this size, 137.5 yards of 2 ply. Much room for improvement.

7  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / How to gauge yarns? on: June 01, 2006 04:07:14 PM
I've got approximately 66 yards of handspun drying as I type this. How do I decide what weight of yarn it should be if it's not a consistent thickness? How does one 'gauge' a thick and thin yarn? by the thickest parts or by the thinnest?
8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Was I cheated? on: June 01, 2006 04:26:40 AM
Ok. I've ordered some roving from the Woolery. 8 oz of red heather corriedale and 4oz of green merino.  I've spun up almost half the corriedale and I'm weighing what I've got on my spindle so far and I'm getting about 4.5 oz. My understanding is that the Schacht spindle I"m using weighs 3oz by itself, which would mean I've spun approximately 1.5 oz of the roving. I weighed what's left and it doesn't add up to 6.5 oz!!!  The green is unused as yet and weighs in at about 3.7oz.

I'm not nitpicking about exact figures(though it WOULD be nice to get what you paid for!!) but the red roving simply doesn't come anywhere NEAR the 8 oz! Is it possible the Spindle does NOT weigh 3 by itself? or did I get robbed?!
