1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / snood? on: August 24, 2006 02:17:12 PM
I want to make little snoods from fabric for when I don't feel like doing my hair. I want it to be like this-

But without the cord tie, and shorter. Any ideas?
2  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / DIaper Genie Refills on: July 05, 2006 12:18:48 PM
I hope you don't think this is gross, but the diapers never actually touch the empty plastic bit, so I use it to hold all my scissors/rotary cutter/eyelet tools on my sewing table. I set my pincushion in the center hold so I always know where it is. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, the diaper genie has a plastic thing that holds a long bag for the diapers. Once that's empty, it's sort of a hollow donut shape.
3  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / cheap awesome smelling body spray on: June 21, 2006 02:19:57 PM
Sorry if this has been posted before, but if you look in the baking aisle at the grocery store, you can find all kinds of super cheap "perfume" in the form of extracts- vanilla, anise, orange, peppermint, all kinds of stuff, and none of 'em over $4, usually.

I just use Vanilla extract in a little spray bottle. Sometimes I mix it up with some Anise (licorice) 'cause my boyfriend likes it. The only thing is I have to put it on before my clothes 'cause the one I like isn't clear.

I've been wanting to try peppermint but I'm afraid I'll smell like foot cream rather than candy. Maybe if I mix it with Vanilla...
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Not sure which size to make... on: June 20, 2006 07:31:31 PM
I'm making New look 6340, view b, and I can't decide which size to make, a 16 or 18... On the 16, the bust and hip are right, but the waist is too small. On the 18, the waist is perfect, but the hip and bust are too large... Should I try making it too large and then downsizing or just go ahead and make the 16 and hope for the best on the waist?
5  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / my bobbin holder keeps breaking my needles... on: June 17, 2006 07:55:53 PM
You know the pointy thing that catches the top thread and brings it around the bobbin? Well it keeps hitting my needle and breaking it... I can't even think of what to do, short of bending the needle, which would just cause even more problems... How did this happen??? Help, please!
6  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / It's Tiki Time! on: June 13, 2006 08:35:04 AM
I was looking at some tiki stuff the other day and decided I need some for my wall. Here's my first little guy.

close up on the face

hope you like him! he'll have some brothers soon, and they'll be going on the wall in my sewing area/bedroom.
7  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Zebra purse- first project post! on: June 11, 2006 05:17:55 AM
I went to Wal Mart a week or so ago and went through the remnants pile, and this zebra print and bright pink tulle were just begging to become a purse. The zebra was 88 cents and the tulle was $1.77 and I have loads left of each. I think I may try this one again because I think I finally figured out how to make it more easily. This was the first time I've tried a triangular sided purse, and I didn't have a pattern so I kinda winged it. I had so much trouble getting it to work, and in the end it was so annoyingly simple. Well, here it is- my Zebra purse, with pink tulle and zebra striped ribbon handles.

Sorry for the crappy pic quality, I only have a really old webcam. You can see that I have no idea what I'm doing with the tulle, since it's all puffy on one end and not so much on the other. That stuff is a pain, I had no idea.

here is the side

Hope you like it.
8  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / neat half toe sock thing... instructions in german and english! on: June 07, 2006 01:51:14 AM

I don't knit but I thought someone might like this here Smiley
9  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / tips for sewing tshirt material? on: May 30, 2006 01:17:29 PM
is it called jersey or is that something else entirely? do I use a straight or zigzag stitch? do i need anything special, like a particular thread. needle, or foot? how do i know what tension to use and if it's too high/low?

I'm sorry about all the questions but I'm totally clueless and I need to sew like mad.
I used to work in promotions at a local venue and i have probably 30 too big tees from all the shows there (atreyu, calico system, punchline, emery, hellogoodbye, hopesfall, etc... i don't necessarily like all those bands but they had cute merch, haha) that are in desperate need of reconstruction.  Also, all my favorite tees need fake "layered" bottoms bc they all show my belly and now that i've had a baby and am covered with stretch marks, I have the good sense to know that it's not cute anymore Tongue

I don't need patterns but rather just instructions/tips/tricks... I know there's gotta be something different with stretchy material, i just want to avoid ruining my neat shirts in the process of figuring it out.

thanks in advance!
