11  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Painted/decorated cigar box for Bday gift on: July 17, 2006 06:29:22 AM
We celebrated my bf's first cousin's 9th birthday yesterday. It occurred to me the night before that we had no gift for her so I decided to see what I could make from my  supplies and I came up with this box for her to put cool little girl things in. Smiley

This was one of my grandfather's old cigar boxes. It had this weird balsa wood frame inside so I ripped that out, replaced the nasty brown felt on the bottom with that flowered felt you see, sanded and removed the nails and stuff left from the balsa, and painted it with craft paint. Then I lined the bottom with the same flowered felt. I decorated the top and sides with these rub-on transfers that I had to try when I saw them at AC Moore. They worked great and were a lot of fun to use. I sprayed the parts with the transfers with some sealer and it was done. It was really fun to make and she loved it so I'm happy. Now time to start working on Christmas gifts...  Undecided

(The whole thing is that bright blue you see on the inside pic, not sure why the colors came out so weird here but all we had was a camera phone.)

That's awesome!! Cute scrapbooking paper has so many great uses.  Cheesy

Going to "borrow"  Lips sealed the idea for the wall unit in my bathroom, it's so ugly.

The ASL lamp is fabulous!  Cool

Ergh I think I'm going to go buy more of those lamps at Lowes while they still have some, they seem to look great with every project. I've made 2 slide lamps with it, now I wanna make this one too.  Embarrassed Cheesy

I may be misunderstanding you and if so I apologize... Anyway I use a clear acrylic spray sealer, either matte or gloss whichever you prefer for your project, before I start gluing things down. (It helps the colors from running and seems to help keep magazine pics from wrinkling.) Smiley

That is too cool and I love the pad holder you added. Also I really like the "border" you did. Smiley  Thanks for link to the tut, going to make a couple of these.  I think my bf will like it better than the ugly tampon boxes laying around the house.  Tongue
