1  Scarf from 2 shirts with tutorial in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Roethke on: March 08, 2018 09:18:47 AM

This infinity scarf is made from 2 t-shirts and requires minimal hand sewing to  connect the ends of the grey strip together.

Photos by Marlene Picard and Jason Troff.  Tutorial by me.

2  Kitty Plugs in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Roethke on: July 23, 2012 10:10:48 AM

Polymer clay kitty earrings!  I'm adopting a homeless kitty who is all black with yellow eyes in a couple of days, and I made myself some new earrings because I'm so excited about it.  These are 5/8" plugs made with polymer clay, painted with acrylic paint, and then the face is sealed with some shellac. I reinforced the ears with a small wire embedded in each one to minimize how easily they could snap off.

3  Painted luggage in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by Roethke on: July 14, 2012 01:48:19 PM
My boyfriend and I finally bought new luggage for the first time earlier this year.  The downside to our new sturdy rollerbags is that they look like everyone else's sturdy rollerbags, so I customized them for us a little bit.

My boyfriend's bag is the greenish brown one.  I painting the common housefly on his bag, but for mine (the black bag) I opted for blowflies because their emerald green bodies would show up better.

This nylon weave is absolutely a nightmare to paint on, so I abandoned trying to keep to any veracity with the wing veination and just tried to keep it somewhat believable and just gave up on painting all their little hairs, so these flies have some severe balding.

The BF is traveling to DC for business tomorrow so he's going to be breaking the flies in and I'll see how well the acrylic paint holds up.

4  Shiney, scaley, black--two large soft necklaces in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Roethke on: October 03, 2010 01:14:42 PM
I've been really interested in statement jewelry lately.  And since big beads are heavy and clack against stuff, I've been experimenting with soft jewelry.

This one is made with silver  nonstretch lame and black netting.  I was going to use old black nylons, but my hands are very rough so I snag nylons often which seems impractical for a necklace.  The netting I ended up using is from an old ugly skirt.  Initially, I stuffed the tubes but then they just looked like silver poops.  Twisting them in differing directions seemed to work out pretty well, though.

The two button holes on the closure are actually pretty crappy as I just barely learned how to make button holes.  It seems almost criminal that someone who works with textiles constantly didn't know how to make button holes until a month ago.

This one is made with scrap pleather cut into various size circles and then sewed onto a jersey backing in a haphazard pattern.  I polished the pleather circles first with dashboard polish.  This was inspired by a jacket from Outsapop.

6  Soft chain necklace in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Roethke on: February 11, 2010 09:42:59 PM
I've been trying to wear more big statement jewelry lately.  Nothing dresses up a boring tank top like really dramatic jewelry.

I made myself a soft chain necklace using this tutorial:http://www.cucumbersome.com/tutorial-leather-chain-necklace/

Instead of leather, I used pleather scraps and made up my own figure eight template because hers was narrower than I wanted it.

8  Postcard framer in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Roethke on: August 10, 2009 01:43:54 PM
A screenprinting store was selling off all their old screens for $1 each.  I bought about 50, and only half of them were cleanable and able to be reused.  For the rest I've been coming up with creative reuses for them.

I made this with just some loop-screws, string, and binder clips.

9  Dream carapace in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Roethke on: July 30, 2009 09:30:20 PM

Yesterday I was fussing about with fabric and other bits, trying to make a necklace, but only making uniformly ugly and stupid things.  I went to bed and had a dream about becoming a beetle, which seemed the correct thing to do at the time.  I woke up and made this necklace.

It's made of lorica, a pleather material, and black rivets.  It's all hand cut, but a lasercut version would be awesome

10  birdcage tights in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by Roethke on: July 30, 2009 05:28:56 PM
I dyed the tights with acid dye, and then discharged the birdcage pattern by screenprinting bleach mixed with a thickener.

Also, check out these fancy new shoes!  I'm so excited about them but still haven't had a chance to wear them anywhere.
