1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / gift swap games, not dirty santa? on: December 06, 2010 11:35:31 AM
our fam does a gift swap at christmas, usually a dirty santa type thing.  no one ever wants to plan this party because the old people ( lol parents and grand parents ) hate it.  the men dont want to participate at all, the women are afraid to steal gifts and hurt someones feelings, and then the little kids cant even participate ( all under 9 ).  well somehow i got stuck with planning it this year.  im trying to think of something different to do for the gift swap.  the men still wont enjoy it, but ill make them participte anyway.

i just need ideas, all im finding online are variations of dirty santa and the left right game.  left right would be ok i guess, i just wanted a few more unique ideas.

my mom suggested some kind of trivia. but im not sure how to work that out.
2  COOKING / Dessert / fudge shop goodies? on: November 23, 2010 09:27:14 AM
so last year i made candy for christmas.  i really enjoyed it and i think i will again this year.  im looking to make things like you would find in a fudge shop.

dh has demanded peanutbutter fudge, so thats on my list.  christmas crack.. posted here and such a rave is totally on my list because i love it.   i was also thinking about chocolate covered cherries, white chocolate covered oreos and maybe some eggnog cookie truffles. id love to make home made turtle's but im a bit intimidated by the caremel.

what other fudge shop goodies can you guys suggest.
3  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / photo quilt, not made with tranfers. on: November 21, 2010 05:38:04 PM
i want to make a photo quilt.  but not with transfers that you iron on.  i want to make pockets you can slip a 4x6 into.  so the photos can change as kids get older ect.  i got the idea from a quilt that hangs in nearly every cracker barrel resturant ive been in.  its a quilt with a tree and plushie apples  that have little pockets to hold wallet size photos.

something similar to the photo pocket purses/diaper bags like this http://www.amazon.com/BSI-QUILTED-PHOTO-DIAPER-BAG/dp/B0020ICESG  but in quilt form rather than bag form.

idealy id like to have 9 squares with pockets, that resembles a frame. i have the clear vinyl, i just need to figure out how to make the quilt blocks and attach them.
4  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / ideas to re dye tie dye? on: August 26, 2010 05:32:45 PM
we tie dyed last weekend.. it was a blast and we got some cool stuff.   my stuff was a total dissapointment.   nothing to do with the dyes, or the technique .. im just off lately.

i just need some ideas on how to snazz em up a bit... they have way more white space than i care for, and just generally dont look as fun as other batches ive made.

5  CLOTHING / Shoes: Completed Projects / painted baby shoes on: August 08, 2010 08:20:48 AM
i had some little white baby shoes and they needed something. i painted them to sorta look like saddle oxfords, but the idea didnt translate perfectly.

they have little cherries, and say Cora in cursive.  they could have been better but my crafting abilities are lacking lately.

and heres how they started out
6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / what to make with diapers, thats not a diaper cake. on: July 06, 2010 01:30:28 PM
any suggestions on what to do with some horrible quality diapers.  i really dont want to use them in a diaper cake because i feel like the whole point in those is to be pretty and functional ie: the diapers are ment to be used.  id feel bad giving away diapers like these.  these things are a step above wrapping your baby in newspaper.

i thought about a diaper wreath.. but again i feel like those should be usefull.. but they dont really have to be.  i know a lot of moms who kept their wreaths for ages and never used the diapers.  id really like to do some diaper animals, and they dont look hard.  i just dont have 10$  to spend on instructions on how to make them... they look pretty easy, i just cant figure out how their held togather.

i have one pack of size 5, super thin cheapo diapers, and 2 1/2 packs of really thick papery feeling size three diapers.

maybe ill just make a diaper cake for myself, lol.  my SIL is throwing me a shower at the end of the month and i dont really know what else to do with them.  maybe donate them to her and let her do the crafting ( but then i miss out on the fun )
7  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / scooby quilted tote on: June 23, 2010 06:23:00 PM

i found this wonderfull quilted bag at a yardsale, and knew a friend whos son is nuts about tractors so i bought it for 1$.  what a deal!

i got to looking and it was in great condition and i really liked the way it was made.  i thought about keeping it for myself.. but were not really all that big on tractors.

with a little help from my quilting instructor i reproduced the bag in a scooby theme for my son, since hes nuts about scooby. now both boys have a cool bag to carry their toys/clothes in.

whole bag

it was so easy, so much easier than i thought it would be. i think ill have to make one for myself and everyone else i know lol.
8  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Q about oatmeal and spices for baths. on: June 07, 2010 07:46:40 AM
ive been using a ground oatmeal+ water mix on some itchys and decided id like to make up a batch of something for some soothing baths. i know you can do just oatmeal, or oatmeal and baking soda ect.

really my question is, would it work to add a little cinnimon/other spices just for pleasant smell, or would that be irritating to skin. id like to use things i have ( ie: stuff in my kitchen ) instead of essential oils ect. since im not really making much i dont want to go buy things i might never use again.

id also like to whip up a batch thats kid friendly, my 2 year old likes to drink his bathwater, no matter how hard i try to keep him from doing it.  he could benefit from something soothing come winter since he gets dry skin easily.  maybe just oatmeal and powedered milk, i doubt baking soda would hurt him if he ingested a little bit.. after all you cook with it.
9  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / recon jeans for the baby bump, and some tyedye on: May 28, 2010 05:00:35 PM
i reconed some regular maternity jeans.  i just seam ripped off the ugly blue stretchy stuff that had elastic in it, and replaced it with some lime green stretchy t shirt.

i just cut the shirt at the armpits and sewed it onto the pants, so i can fold this twice or three times, as you can see in the pictures.  if i totally unfold it i can literly wear it as a tube top lol.

also a  tye dye t shirt dh and i made.  we tye dyed it pink, and then he painted buddah on it. or as my 2 year old says "boobah"

please excuse the sorta bad pictures.. i was using the picture in the mirror method.
10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / how do i size a pattern. on: May 18, 2010 06:11:57 AM
i decided i liked the amy butler in stitches lounge pants, but i dont have the money for the book, and our library doesnt have it.  i make pants for my toddler all the time, just by tracing existing pants and it works great.

i got a cool sheet and a pair of too big, but built right pj pants and traced away.  i gave myself half inch seam allowance.. which made this pattern look huge but i figured i can take it in when i get the whole thing togather and see what works and what doesnt.  i put it all togather and, ended up with something equal to a size small.  im 6 months pregnant and was a xl to begin with so these dont fit at all lol.   i went back and folded everything in half and held the newpants up to the old and they looked the same... but when i unfolded  they were about 3 inches too small at the waist. one thigh filled up most of the waist lol.
im not sure what i did i was sewing with pregnant brain late at night. the pants came out wonderfully though, just not my size.

so how do i size a pattern? because obviously tracing and allowing for seams wasnt the best way for this project. i might just have to do it the proper way, what ever that is lol.
