1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: Help me make gingerbread houses in Japan! Advice please! on: December 05, 2010 09:57:13 PM
Hey guys, great ideas!

I'm afraid that the blender trick wouldn't work in this case because I have so many classes that I am doing this with.

BUT the wall spackle is a great idea. I am going to the local hardware store tonight.

I am also going to try the dough idea and make a dough out of paste/flour/water and see how well that works.

Any other ideas? Tonight is my test night! :-D
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Help me make gingerbread houses in Japan! Advice please! on: December 05, 2010 05:47:47 PM
So I am teaching English in Japan, and have been asked to do special Christmas lessons starting this Wednesday. As part of it, I want to have the children make gingerbread houses. For a number of reasons, we will be making them as decoration only.

So, we are using cardboard forms to which the children will adhere cookies and candy.

I have two problems:

1. I cannot acquire powdered sugar in economical amounts (I can only get small, expensive packets) so I need to make a substitute "icing" that looks like white frosting and dries hard

2. I cannot decide if i should cover the houses in cookies ahead of time and then let the kids put on the candies as final decoration, or if I should let them go for it.

Please help! どもありがとございます!

Great job, very stylish and yet definitely registers as a Dalek!

Wow, Sewnutzz, you're the BEST! Thank so you so much for your very thorough and helpful tips. The starching is a great idea, and I think I will get wider ribbon now that you mention it.

I will edit my original post to include pics.

5  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / silk chiffon patchwork- am I nuts? on: April 28, 2010 07:07:45 AM
I got a bunch of squares of gorgeous, very lightweight silk chiffon. I want to stitch them into a patchwork scarf. The patches would be large, maybe 10"x8" each. Have I lost my mind?

I'm thinking about getting a spool 1/4" ribbon, sandwiching the seams on both sides, and topstitching so that the scarf looks good on both sides. And as far as the hem goes, should I just do a rolled hem? What would you do?

Do you guys have any suggestions? Should I try another technique?

Thanks sooo much!

Wow, I can't believe how long it's been since I joined this community... not long after it got its start!

I'm glad you'll still be around as a participant, Leah, but it's still a shock for me. Just makes me realize how much time has passed. Best of luck with your new ventures!

PS And of course I have to add how much of an inspiration Craftster has been to me. It's all thanks to you creating such a great virtual space for so many creative, generous people to come and share their ideas!

Hi all-

My package from AbsurdAnnekuh came Saturday:

They are charms made from repurposed Scrabble tiles and two (cherry?) lollipops. My favorite tile is the one of 10's All-Stars.

I know I promised the file for the Adipose stationery, so let me go post the file to my Flickr and I'll be right back!

Thanks for all the compliments, guys!

I'd be happy to post a file of the adipose stationery so y'all can make your own, if you'd like. Just let me know if there's enough interest for me to upload it. (It's a 8.5x11" design, so you get 2 pages of stationery per page.) I can also post the envelope template if any of you have the ability to print your own envelopes.

Wonder where our MIA swap people are... :-/
