1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: "_____ in a box" gift ideas. on: October 19, 2007 02:36:29 PM
So I'm totally stealing a few ideas from here for some birthday presents next week. (Why, oh why, did half the people I know have to be born in October? What is the deal?!) I still need more cheap ideas, though, so any suggestions are welcome! Luckily, all these people have great senses of humor so all tongue-in-cheek things will be well received. And after 91 pages of awesome in-a-box themes, I can't for the life of me remember who to give props to for the following:

Jack-in-a-Box (for my mom's new hubby - I guess that would make him my step-dad, huh?)
- The Shining DVD
- Framed picture of my grandfather, whose name is Jack (my mom's dad, his new father-in-law)
- Deck of cards
- Burned Jack Johnson CD
- Burned White Stripes CD
- Felt donkey plushie (as in jacka** - is that too obscure?)
- Need more/better ideas!

Commute-in-a-Box (for my mom, a nurse who has an hour commute to work each way, three times a week)
- Burned podcasts to CD (I'm thinking NPR game shows, great Fresh Air and This American Life shows, and others.)
- Lumbar pillow (will also need to make)
- Travel mug (she has tons but you can never have too many, I suppose.)
- Dunkin' Donuts gift certificates (for when she doesn't wake up in time - 4:00 AM! - to make coffee before leaving)
- Bad Girls' Guide to the Open Road book (granted, she can't exactly read it while driving and isn't making a "real" road trip, but she'll get a kick out of it.)
- Wipes or paper towels for those inevitable coffee spills
- Need more/better ideas!

Katie Survival Kit (for my sister Katie's boyfriend - they live together and I'm trying to pass on my Katie survival skills!)
- Earplugs
- Mini bottles of alcohol
- Aspririn or other pain meds
- Coloring book and crayons (to give to her when she's bugging him about changing the channel - she just needs something to occupy herself!)
- De-stress aromatherapy candle and tea
- Journal and pen for "getting his frustrations out"
- Stress ball
- Tampons (a secret stash for him for when she runs out and asks him to go to the store to get them, which he hates to do)
- Katie voodoo doll (will need to make)
- Need more/better ideas!

And finally, I need to come up with something for my grandparent's 40th anniversary! My whole family is going down to Florida in a week for just this occasion and that's when I'll be giving all these presents to their recipients. I'm stuck on what to do for my grandparents, though. They're a bit older, are very active in their church, and thoroughly enjoy their gardens and pool. My grandfather is brilliant (graduated MIT at age 17!), on dialysis and just recently had to start using a cane which severely hurts his pride.. My grandmother is a bit younger than he, loves cooking Weight Watchers style and getting together with friends for cards.

Super duper cute!
3  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Help! Need quick appetizer to impress guests TONIGHT! on: August 14, 2007 11:31:19 AM
So it's 2:30 PM, I'm at work and my boy just called to let me know that we'll be having a friend, along with the friend's parents, over tonight for a glass of wine before heading out to dinner. We have to, of course, serve an appetizer or hors d'oeuvre of some sort and I don't know any terrific (veg, of course) recipes that I can whip up in 15 minutes! I do have time to swing by the grocery store but I will seriously only have about 15 minutes to throw it all together. I'm really having a culinary idea blockage so any help or ideas you guys might have would be SO appreciated!

I made that backpack too - here is a photo of it:

The fabric is denim from joann and then a bird quilting fabric from Moda.

Did you have trouble weaving the straps through? I did!

Yes, I had a TON of trouble getting the straps through the casing! I ended up using a plastic straw that I had kicking around to push it through. That helped a bit.

I LOVE the bags you did, though. Too cute!

The suit is gorgeous and you are gorgeous in it!

Ok, so I totally set the second (close-up) picture as my desktop background. Hope you don't mind but I smile just looking at it. I am in love! They are absolutely amazing.

I love this book! I actually spend more time admiring the pictures and the fabrics she uses than sewing, but I have made a couple of the projects. Here's my version of the backpack. That's my boy, Matt, modeling it. He's such a good sport. (The bag turns out to be a bit small for a boy - he's 6'1" - but it's perfect for me!)

I've never made clothing before but decided this morning that I absolutely HAD to have a new tank for Bonnaroo next week. It's supposed to be 90 degrees and rain the whole time so I need to be comfy! (Having grown up in NH, 90 degrees to me is UBER-hot and I get wicked cranky. Comfort is essential. My fellow New Englanders, you know what I'm talkin' about!) Anyway, I whipped this up this morning. I didn't use a pattern but definitely tried to copy one of my favorite tanks that I already have.

I think I've caught the bug, though. How unbelievably cool is it to own clothing made JUST FOR YOU that fits perfectly and for only a couple bucks??!! Why am I just getting this now?

Absolutely gorgeous! The fabrics are terrific finds - I'm jealous! But, like everyone else, I adore the last bag. So perfect. Nice job!
