1  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / need help asap! on: May 01, 2009 02:15:23 PM
Sorry this is so rushed, but I really need some advice.

There was a death in the family this past week, and the funeral is tomorrow (Sat) morning.  A few years ago, we had some of the rose buds from the funeral wreath preserved at a local florist.  They've since shut down and no one else in our area does them anymore.  The buds are still in perfect condition (slightly darkened in the past 8 years) and look to have been preserved with some kind of waxy substance.

I've used my google powers to the extreme but can't decide on:
-drying with silica gel
-dipping in glycerine and then drying
-dipping in paraffin wax (which may or may not last long)

Does anyone have any feedback on this?  I'd need to know soon, as I'd probably start the preservation process tomorrow afternoon after the memorial service.

2  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Sweetest gift ever (Img obese) on: December 24, 2007 04:33:30 PM
So my boyfriend flew in for xmas, and I didn't really think he was "crafty" at all, until I got my Christmas Eve gift today.  He took a journal that he bought, along with some scrapbooking supplies, and made the prettiest journal I've ever seen!  Seriously.

the front.

every so many pages, there's a sweet quote pasted in.  Love it.

But yes.  Horribly impressed with my lil britty boy!  The Queen mother is definitely proud of him!
As am I... maybe I'll finally get my butt in gear with my short stories!!!

3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / gift for the best friend and her man... IMG heavy on: December 24, 2007 04:27:31 PM
I meant to post this a few days ago, but with the British boyfriend in town and dealing with family, time's been a bit hard to come by.

So for my best friend and her boyfriend, I purchased a horse and carriage ride through downtown Lousiville in their new Cinderella carriage--white and in the shape of the pumpkin, with purple-ish christmas lights woven around it.  Very pretty.

Only problem was--had no way of giving it to them creatively.  Then, I thought of this:

A cast iron Cinderella carriage.  I attached a pretty little note to it giving the time and date of their ride.  But then I needed something to put it in...

voila!!  A gorgeous handmade box fit perfectly--and she could re-use it!

She loved it!

4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Juno shirt goes from flab to fab! on: December 24, 2007 04:15:51 PM
So I saw Juno for free the other night, and they were handing out free shirts as well.  Hurrah!  So they were your standard unisex tee sizes, so the original looked like this:

Note the sad face.

So with some minor alterations, the shirt went to fitted and cutsie!

Oh, and Juno absolutely rocked my socks off.
5  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / suh-weet new journal. on: June 16, 2007 09:24:16 AM
So I bought a plain journal at B&N a few weeks ago for my short stories and such.  But it was just so plain and uninspiring!

so I jazzed it up a tad bit!

all i really did was paint it bright red, then lightly swirled some gold paint over it.  The heart-piece was actually an old earring that was in a bag of costume jewelry that belonged to my aunt before she passed away a few years ago.

I thought it turned out nice!
6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / help me? on: October 31, 2006 07:43:07 PM
Ok, so my fiance and I will be celebrating our first christmas together in our brand new house.

I'm still a college student, so I'm perpetually broke--which means I'm going to make most of his christmas gifts.  Trouble is, I don't know what to make!  I have one thing I'm working on... it involves black and white photos of us and matting them in nice frames and arranging them on one of our blank walls.  Anyhow... here's a lil about him..

He's 25 and is a social studies teacher for the 8th grade.  He's definately "metro," and he likes football.  He likes dogs, video games, and CSI...

Ok... so any ideas?  I've already made him a fleece blanket at the beginning of fall, annnnnd he doesn't wear scarves... the one thing i know how to knit!

So what's a girl to do?Huh

8  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / plaid cuteness! on: June 13, 2006 05:50:00 PM
First the fantastic Dick Tracy skirt, now this!  I've been on a skirt trip here lately, and the fabric was only 1.45 a yard, with 30% offa that!

What'cha think?
9  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Dick Tracy is my hero. on: June 07, 2006 08:25:08 AM
so I found this great Dick Tracy (who I seriously heart muchly) bedsheet at the local goodwill, and I wanted to make pillows out of it.  BUT then I found this great pattern on sale for .99 .... and I thought, why not marry the two awesomely great ideas?? This is what came out of it....

How cool, huh?  And I must re-emphasize that Dick Tracy is soooo awesome.

The pattern was Butterick B4686 and it was skirt D.

10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / mom's old shirt into stripedy goodness... on: May 23, 2006 05:34:03 PM
So I was going thru bags of stuff being sent to the Goodwill, and I noticed a shirt of my mom's that I used to wear as a nightshirt when I was a kid.  Before that, my mom wore it as a teenager (as shown to me in old photos by my kick arse memom)... so the shirt was really soft, old, and comfy--as well as really nostalgic for me...

it looked like this...

really baggy with no shape to it.

So after some fiddling around on the sewing machine, I came up with this....
