1  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / possible joining / how is this done - question on: May 19, 2011 03:31:10 PM
So I found a granny square that I thought was cute and have decided to make some of....then I found someone had made a pillow out of them. The part that I really liked were these lines that they had added to it..they kind of outline every square.
The more I look at the picture, the more it doesn't look like they were used for joining the pieces together but I could be wrong.
I'm wondering if anyone has a link to or can explain how this is done. I'll post a picture of what I'm asking about...

It's that pink line between all of the squares.....

 Thanks in advance!
2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Craftster art school? on: May 14, 2011 10:11:47 PM
I've been toying with posting this for awhile...

I for one have always wanted to go to art school but never have. I did some focus on art when i was in college but I want more! lol I have friends from back home in art schools and always thought it was so awesome that they get to create these pieces and whatnot for classes.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested and has any ideas....on creating a Craftster art school. I guess it would kind of be like a craftalong....with lots of options.
lol I hate posting this and not fully being able to explain what I'm looking for...but I guess that's part of why I am posting it...for suggestions and ideas.
There could be themes, 'assignments', etc.
I don't know exactly what they teach in the different areas of art schools...so maybe some people who have been to the schools can crack the code. lol
I know I personally learn towards various fiber & needle arts, but this idea can of course welcome all types of art.

But yeah...I would love to hear if anyone has any ideas, suggestions, etc Smiley
3  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / spinning bamboo - setting twist? on: July 12, 2007 08:25:00 PM
I was curious what people do once they've spun bamboo...
I bought some bamboo roving...and I plan on spinning it and plying it...but I'm curious as to...how do I set the twist? I was told not to use warm or hot water because it will reactivate the dye....so do I use cold water? Something else? lol I just don't want to ruin the bamboo.
4  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Plastic bag doggie raincoat on: June 25, 2007 03:24:30 PM
I've been dying to try my hand at making plastic bag 'yarn' and crocheting with it, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to try it out.
It's been pretty rainy here the last few days and my dog hates going out in the rain, so I decided to make her a little coat for her back so she doesn't get wet. lol She doesn't like that clean feeling.
I made 6 basic granny squares, three of each color combo and then trimmed it in yellow. The piece that goes around her chest is braided grocery bag. I decided not to use plastic for the piece that goes on her belly because I didn't think plastic would feel too well rubbing on her little belly, so I cut up a t-shirt that I had ruined with hair dye & hair bleach (the piece I used for the dog coat didn't have any chemicals on it though).....but yeah, I used cotton t-shirt material for the belly strap.
And without further ado....here is my model, Sara.....

oh, if anyone can't see the images let me know....I can always upload them to a different place.
5  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / tips on spinning fabric & plastic? on: June 22, 2007 01:39:34 PM
I was interested in spinning some scraps of fabric and some plastic grocery bags (in different skeins)....and I was wondering if anyone's spun either of those and if you have any tips to share?
I guess my main concern is how does the fabric and plastic...stay spun together? And how would it stay together when plying? What does setting the twist do for these materials?
6  UNITED STATES / Tennessee / crafty Memphis - Cordova? on: May 29, 2007 02:28:00 PM
In July I'm moving to Memphis and I was wondering if there are some Memphis Craftsters around?
I was curious if there's any art / craft shows, fairs, other cool artsy craft things that go on? Any local yarn stores, other craft stores?

 I can't wait for July!

7  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / coiling webpages & tutorials? on: April 11, 2007 05:37:44 PM
For my fiber arts class I'm supposed to do a couple coiling projects. My prof showed us the basics of making a coiled vessel and that's about it. I was wondering if anyone knew of any websites about coiling and with coiling tutorials?
I found a couple artists but it just showcased their work or were about Native American baskets....I have a few ideas on what I want to make, I'm just curious about some technical stuff...
8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / winding yarn - making a skein w/out tools? on: April 07, 2007 04:39:24 PM
I was wondering if there's a way to make a new ...hank is it called? of my yarn without going and buying a skein winder or a niddy noddy? Whenever I look up winding yarn it only comes up with winding hanks into balls. Tutorials anywhere?
9  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / pictures added!- leader issues on: April 04, 2007 03:31:47 PM
I went downtown and splurged on a bottom whorl drop spindle and a bunch of different colored rovings....I've been going through the FAQ sites about how to begin and whatnot....but I am having the hardest time getting it started. lol I think there's something about the leader and connecting the wool to it that I'm just not getting.
I start spinning the spindle clockwise...to connect the wool and the yarn leader...it twists, but immediantly gets twisted so tight it wants to go clockwise. Or it spins itself to where the wool comes off the leader and then the wool unwinds.
  Anyone have any suggestions?
10  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / a 'can i do this with multiple pieces' question... on: April 02, 2007 09:06:41 PM
A lot of the tutorials I've seen have all been using one ...hunk of wool, whether it's all dyed one color or painted or whatever. But I was at my local yarn store and saw that they sold little ounce packages of dyed wool. I was wondering if it's possible to combine them in some way and spin them into a skein. (sorry...lol I haven't spun yet...I'm just getting info and purchasing supplies..) I didn't get to ask the couple who own the shop as I was buying something specific with fellow classmates and we needed to get back to class.....
But yeah.....I didn't know if I could mix and match or if it all had to be ..one bundle to begin with.  lol I hope that question made sense.
Oh...and one more thing. Are there any tutorials for adding things to your yarn? Like....buttons, beads, ribbon, etc.?
 Any help is appreciated!
