93  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Heartbreak Shrug and other Lost Knits--FOUND 12/22/12 on: December 21, 2012 06:24:40 PM

I was in a recent swap with a very special person so I wanted to bring out my A-game and challenge myself to make things I rarely make: a lace shrug, a pair of leg warmers, and a pair of fingerless mitts...

Unfortunately, the package is lost, hence the title of this post...Sad...
But, I do have my pictures and I did learn a lot...so not all was lost!

Front of lace shrug, modeled by one of my co-workers, who wanted to keep it:

Back of lace shrug:

Fingerless mitts done in a seed stitch pattern:

Leg warmers with skull buttons:

Thank goodness that there are so many craftsters willing to angel because I just could not remake these items any time soon! Cheesy

Thanks for looking!
94  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Craft Your Daily Reflections--Continuing the saga in 2014! on: December 07, 2012 07:17:41 AM

A few years ago I saw a project that I wanted to do...the project is very simple...excellent for beginner knitters/crocheters.

It is a project that is not just about the knitting/crocheting...the pattern is simple...it is about being aware of your everyday existence and appreciating the small things in life...we take so much of our lives for granted and get caught up in being inside with our electronic devices....

Maybe you can get a small group of friends or your knitting/crochet circle to participate...it is a project to connect you to nature, to others, and to yourself.

Here is how it works:

Each day, preferably the same time each day, you look at the sky...determine what color the sky is and knit/crochet it.

The original project only has 5 colors, but you can be more ambitious and add more.  I have selected three blues, three greys, and a cream. It might be too much, but I wanted to be prepared. I am using fingering weight, but you can use any yarn as long as you adjust your needles and number of stitches.  I might throw in a pale orange since pollution is a reality in my area, and as awful as that is, sometimes it makes the sky a gorgeous orange even in the middle of the day. Make it as simple as you can. This is a project of calmness.

You can also knit squares or pick a different pattern...I have seen huge afghans made with this concept. You can do a ripple stitch, do a granny square, etc.  Be creative.  The goal is to have a record of your sky for a full year. (Hopefully, it won't be all blue or all grey! Cheesy)

You can do it for a month and join anytime during 2013, but I am starting my scarf on January 1.  If you can't do a day, write it down on your calendar and catch up...don't get too far behind or you will not appreciate your day...you are just knitting or crocheting!

I think to keep things manageable, we should post once a week , but at least once a month...grab a post and post your progress in that post.  I will start it.

The link to the original story and project is here.  Lots of pictures, too!

Please join me for this journey of discovery.

EDITED:  Looks like people who do not knit or crochet want to play with fabrics, paper, etc.  Heck--the more the merrier...craft the weather in your own meaningful way! Cheesy

This craftalong has evolved to include people who want to craft their moods or another form of nature, such as trees;  some people want to include their children or strangers.

So, we are changing the craftalong to be one of your own personal daily reflections...a time to be with nature, or your kids, to understand your moods...to enrich and document a year of your life...and like life, it will evolve as the year goes on...please don't feel you have to follow any rules...some of you might want to do five days on a free Saturday...you can skip days...heck--you can skip months and come back!
95  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Face Your Monkey Fears with a Monkey Print Purse on: July 18, 2012 07:01:44 AM
I was such a scaredy cat kid...I was scared of clowns, monkeys, height, etc.  I was pinched or bitten by one of those organ grinder monkeys when I was overseas with my Dad...they are not cute and not friendly...they want money or food! Cheesy

Anyway, a friend gave me a ton of decorating fabric that I have been storing for years...as I was destashing, I found this piece, which I am guessing was for draperies...I was going to pitch it, but then decided, that I need to get over my monkey incident once and for all!
Seriously, as an adult living in the USA, when will I ever encounter a mean monkey? Cheesy

So, here is my purse in homage of dressed up monkeys everywhere...

Wide shot:

Close-up,Side one:

Close-up,Side two:

I lined it with a tan bamboo print and had just enough monkey fabric to make an inside pocket.  It is closed with a magnetic thing and the handles are bamboo.

I will probably use it more like a tote or maybe a project bag than an everyday bag...and yeah, I think maybe I no longer fear monkeys! Cheesy
96  CLOTHING / Shoes: Completed Projects / A Drummer should wear fun shoes! on: July 15, 2012 11:12:26 AM
My hubby bought these black, plain converse shoes to wear while playing drums at formal events...he now plays at fun places, so it was time to revamp his boring black shoes! I remember seeing some pretty cool painted ones on Craftster, so I started looking to see how it was done...

I used fabric paint markers and just started doodling....one thing led to another and the next thing you know, I had painted all four sides....now he wants to do one of his other pairs and I will do the other...what a fun way and inexpensive way to get "new" shoes!

Thanks for looking! And, thanks for all of you who inspired and taught me how to do it!
97  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / My new favorite hat in my favorite color, RED! Swirly and warm! on: November 28, 2011 06:50:59 AM
I was inspired by my new craftster meet-up friend, indigo_roses to try the pattern she used in her own post:

I even used the same yarn, only in my favorite color, red!

I love this pattern:  it is fast, easy, and looks complicated because of the spirals! Cheesy

Thanks for looking and thanks indigo_roses for the inspiration!
98  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / 50 Projects 2012--Join here and post your lists ! on: November 18, 2011 06:52:38 AM

(image is of scarves shipped to the Special Olympics 2012--another great craftalong that motivated me to get these done on time! Cheesy)

Welcome to the 50 Projects 2012 thread!  This is a craftalong that encourages you to try new crafts, hone and expand your current skills, get great ideas, make gifts for family, friends and yourself...get organized and focused...

You can handle your list in any way that will help you stay on track and record your progress...your list can be changed anytime...or you can just add to your list when you get done...cross stuff off...whatever works!

50 is just a random goal...some people will have far less, others far more...there is no score-keeping...you are doing this for yourself and sharing what you want with your fellow craftsters!

We encourage comments, lots of pics, and positive cheering on...we still have to follow craftster rules, so please stay on the topic of crafting as much as you can, but please do not forget that we are a social community so be respectful and kind to each other in bad and good times!  Most of all, have FUN!!!

I have a prize ready for one of the lists that I randomly selected already... Cheesy...so good luck and remember to post to see if you win!!!  You do not have to have a list, but if you want to enter the list random drawing, you will need at least a mini list! Cheesy  Lists must be posted by January 7th to enter!

99  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / DORMANT: Use Your Leftovers- Scrappy Projects (not afghans!) Crochet-along on: October 30, 2011 04:44:45 PM
I visited a favorite yarn store along with fellow crocheter and craftster member indigo_roses.  They had a basket that contained three different yarns to make a scarf...I picked one group that I would never have put together myself to see if i would like it...I DID!! Cheesy

When I finished the scarf, I thought:  I could put together my own mixes!!

If you guys are like me, you have plenty of leftover yarns from projects you made for swaps, friends, co-workers, family, etc.  And, you probably have yarns that you bought that you have no idea what you were thinking...or a special skein that you can't think what to make with it...and, finally, you probably have tiny balls of a lot of unrelated yarns...

How about using up some of your "forgotten" yarn? Cheesy  Destash that yarn that you have been storing...You can experiment with mixing things and be quite surprised how an ugly yarn can be made "beautiful"!

You can make a scarf, a hat, a shawl, a bag...anything except an afghan (there are plenty of craftalongs for those!)...

Here is the basic idea:

Find a yarn that reads "solid"
Add a textured yarn, like ribbon, mohair, etc.
Add another yarn that goes with the above

I am going to try to keep my projects to three to five yarns...I don't want it super scrappy...

You can make all even rows or you can just keep adding your yarns when they run out...I plan on doing it both ways...

Anyone want to join it?  Share mixes, stitches, projects?

Here is a start on what I have done so far:

The scarf is single crochet using a J hook.  It is about 100 inches long (definitely use a foundation stitch for this one!)...and I did uneven rows for each of the three yarns (Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light-my "solid", Knit One Crochet Too Doceur et Soie-baby mohair and silk, St, Charles Venus -rayon twist)...these are fun and easy even for beginners...and you can watch tv while doing them! Cheesy

100  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Neko (cat) Tote on: July 31, 2011 05:21:08 PM
While cleaning out her basement, my sister found this fabric which she had purchased in Japan. She didn't know what to do with it so she gave it to me!

I added a bit to the side, some vinyl on the bottom, quilted around each of the "lucky" cats, and turned it into a large tote bag. There are 24 different cats! The lining is a simple red mini-dot that was in my stash.

I am guessing that she will want it back now!  Cheesy

Close up of some of the cats:

Thanks for looking--guess I will pack it up and surprise her with it tomorrow! Cheesy
