1  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Wallet/wristlet/Clutch - it's all in one! on: November 23, 2006 04:57:56 PM
I wanted a small wristlet that I could take to concerts but also use as a wallet so I didn't have to transfer all the necessities from my purse every time I wanted to leave my purse at home, so I designed this. I loved it so much I couldn't bear to use it. I do that with a lot of things  Wink (just had to use a Thanksgiving smiley)  When I was trying to think of how I wanted to dress it up I remembered this little vintage pendant I got years ago. Somehow I found it immediately and it just goes with the whole thing so well, I just adore it!

Ok, I'll shut up about how much I love this now.

Happy Thanksgiving!
2  UNITED STATES / Wisconsin / Wisconsin Etsy Sellers on: October 13, 2006 07:54:46 PM
As I'm building up the items for my own shop I'm thinking of ways to get the word out about Etsy since I think it is still fairly obscure - around here at least.  At my 9-5 I write press releases and thought something about Etsy could likely be published.

I'm looking for local Etsy sellers (Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general) that want to be considered as "featured" sellers in print and online articles. Basically all you have to do is pm me with a link to your shop and any other info you think is important. I would include you in a list in a press release I send out. You should also tell me about any local publications or websites I may not know about.

It would be up to the particular publication to decide which sellers were featured.

I'll be creating a categorized list of Etsy sellers, if I get enough sellers to join in. I wouldn't take anyone off the list unless they had only 1 or 2 items (with the exception of fine art shops), closed up shop, or had mostly items that would be considered offensive by the publication (swearing, racial slurs, graphic nudity - that kind of stuff).

That last caveat really depends on the publication as some of the publications on my list would consider some of those things a bonus - so don't hold back if you have a racy shop. I'll either put in a disclaimer or put your shop in the edgy section. Edgy will go over very well with a lot of publications and will likely have top billing for a few press releases. Then again I know Reiman Publications could find a place somewhere for country, old fashioned, or garden/bird related crafts from Etsy.

Basically there is a place for everything and the only reason I would omit your shop from the list of sellers is if it was completely incompatable with the spirit of the place I was sending it to. I can't send "Buds and Blooms" a link to a shop full of embroidered thong underwear with racy sayings just as much as I can't send an edgy urban weekly links to shops with country crafts. Though I know of a few publications that would love to showcase that whole range of craft items.

(Sorry I rambled on there but I came down with a horrible cold today and the thought of making those last paragraphs more coherent frightens me at the moment. I'm half delerious on Nyquil and a potent cocktail of nemacing germs.)

If I find out in advance that you will be featured I will let you know. This rarely happens unless the writer has to verify something with me personally but it does happen. Usually I get a tenative publication date/range that I can inform you of if this happens.

I have a two week timeframe to gather names and look at your shops to categorize and edit/provide descriptions for them - so get back to me ASAP. If I get at least a few sellers to make this article worthwhile I can post here the publications I send to and if I know of any articles. Quite a few times I've written a press release for work and never knew it was published until someone else mentioned it a few weeks later, so keep your eyes peeled. Remember to suggest any publications you know of - especially outside the Metro Milwaukee area.

Hope to hear from fellow crafty wisconsinites!

3  Calls for Swap Angels / Swap Angel Archive / Big Lebowski - 1 angel Found! on: October 01, 2006 10:49:21 PM
Angel found!

Unfortunately knitty mcknitknit's partner for The Big Lebowski swap is no where to be found. But knitty sent her an awesome package and needs an angel. You know you want to do it!

Yeah - you get friend of craftster status if you angel and other benefits like FOC board access, special offers from Leah, and looking cool in every post with a nifty changeable FOC avatar - plus you get to be super nice to a fellow craftster in need.

Check out the gallery here - https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=119836.0

and the original thread here -

Here's her swap info -

What are four of your favorite things about the movie? Oh, so hard to pick. (1) how quotable it is, though i guess that's obvious. I quote it all the time. (2) the dream sequence  (3) Walter's character (ooh, and Jesus Quintana)  (4) The Dude, in all his idiot glory.
Do you any ideas on something you might like? Hmm. Whatever! Something useful is always appreciated, like a tote bag or knitting supplies. If not, no worries!

See - she's the perfect person to angel for!

PM me for details - but I'm going to have a lapse in internet service beyond my control from 10/2/06 through 10/04/06. If you want to start angeling now please contact knitty mcknitknit directly.

5  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Jeffersons themed housewarming gift? on: August 21, 2006 08:20:41 PM
So I have this awesome DIY guy friend who is waiting to delve more into craftster during the winter months but was searching ebay for a Jeffersons themed housewarming gift - I told him to stop right there and make her something. My only thought was a decopaged box but someone who was more into the jeffersons than I would probably come up with a better idea.  He's such a great guy I told him I'd ask all of you!

So do you have any ideas?

Walter: And let's also not forget--let's not forget, Dude--that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city--that isn't legal either.
Dude: What're you, a fucking park ranger now?

I'm not sure if I posted the script somewhere before but it's here - http://www.thugbot.net/features/lebowski/lebowski_script.txt

Since I had an early heads up I was able to find a new partner/angel for spazcadet55 early on in the swap(pjmclnj). spazcadet received a small initial package but was never heard from and unresponsive when contacted. After some discussion among pjmclnj, knitty mcknitknit, and diannab everyone agreed that the best thing to do with pjmclnj's package was to send it as an angel package to knitty mcknitknit. Knitty had sent early (a great package) but her partner flaked. spazcadet55 responded after negative feedback was given and apologized for flaking.

Oops - I forgot to modify that it was closed in the title!
9  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 14 ENTRIES / Hunter S Thompson/Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas sunglasses (PinkyK DON'T LOOK!) on: August 06, 2006 09:57:04 PM
I painted this pair of sunglasses for a swap based on Hunter S Thompson and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I'm entering the leaving Las Vegas sign and not the Ralph Steadman inspited bat. It's not the best of show but it was really hard making those tiny letters using the tiniest needle I had as a paintbrush...

I wish I could get better pics in daylight but that's all folks.

Can I post better pics after sunrise?

I'll still be touching this up once it is dry but I had to send in before the deadline.

This is an artistic representation of what would have been reflected in Hunter S Thompson's Sunglasses as he was leaving Las Vegas after the Fear and Loathing incident.
10  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Keeping Paint Brushes in Shape on: July 31, 2006 12:02:57 AM
I don't really know where this goes but I have a tip and hopefully it will help some of you. Let me know if there is a better place for this but I searched all over and can't find a place for miscellaneous craft tips! I'm assuming this is the place...

Recently I was painting something for a swap and my less than expensive brushes would splay out at the tips when drying. The next time I washed one I sprayed hairspray on it while it was still wet - basically saturated it - shaped it so it was pointy and in the proper shape and let it dry. It worked great with acrylics (though I'm not much of a chemist so I don't know how it would work with other paints). I got none of the lines from stray hairs on the edges. I also like to trim away any stray hairs that are bent out of shape or coming loose. I'm sure I could buy a much more expensive set of brushes but I don't have the budget for it nor do I paint that often. The hairspray is also seeming to work against getting kinks in the bristles when the brushes are in storage.

I'm also considering mod podge for some of the tiny brushes I use to put in very small details - thinner than a pen - that kind of stuff. From experience letting small amounts of it dry on brushes and fabric it seems like if you use a small amount you retain flexibility but also it will be stiff. You would be sealing off the brush itself and just using the outer surface to pick up paint instead of getting all that paint inbetween the bristles. I'll keep this posted with my results.
