82  Heart of Darkness New mo bettuh image-Yay!! in Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) by balkandina on: June 19, 2007 08:16:28 PM
I found this image of The Prince of Wales in the 1920s with two other hunters and a killed lion on safari. I love Africa and it reminded me of the Joseph Conrad book "Heart of Darkness".I  distressed it with sandpaper and collaged it over some scrap paper and another picture of Victoria Falls. I placed a slide frame around the lion and added transparency from an ad for travel to Africa in the 50s that says  "Shoot wild animals" and "wondrous beauty and strange" .I then used umber and brown ink pads to colour it and painted on beeswax. To finish it I put some gold ribbon under the lion and added a small coin from Zimbabwe. I've really only started ATCs in the last few months-the small canvas is quite different for me-I usually do assemblage, decoupage and altered books. I hope the image shows up-it's definitely harder to photograph these little arts and I don't have a scanner! If this doesn't show well, I shall try again!

Alert! I gave in and got a new camera today and I followed the advice in this thread https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=172096.0
and I am so much happier with my photo posting. Huzzah!

83  Microscope slides -homage to Mum and beginning of an altered necklace in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by balkandina on: June 19, 2007 02:09:48 PM
I made a series of microscope slide pendants for my sisters for mother's day since our Mother died many years ago. I used photo copies of old pictures of her and pencil coloured them. I put a picture of her as a young girl on one side and a picture of her when she first married our Dad on the other. They aren't soldered A: because I don't have a soldering gun Wink B: My mother loved copper and collected copper molds.

My mother as a young woman

Mum as a panto dancer, a baby and floating in space as a flower girl!
This slide is the beginning of a "story necklace" about a young woman and vinyl (!)

85  Hearts and donuts by a newbie! in Polymer Clay: Completed Projects by balkandina on: June 18, 2007 02:27:06 PM
My 12 year old daughter has just recently started using polymer clay, so I promised her I'd post a few of her charms. These are inspired by some things she's admired on Craftster and other places, so please accept them as a compliment, not a copy Grin

This is a tiny charm holder box decorated with a clay heart

She loves all of the little food charms that are posted.
As soon as we can access a better camera, she'll post some more Smiley Thanks fo all being so inspiring and starting her on a new craft!!

86  Re: Garden thru the season shots?? in Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Discussion and Questions by balkandina on: June 12, 2007 10:56:29 AM
So-here we are in June in the garden...

This is the front "cottage garden with rusty stuff I find at abandoned sites"

The new rock garden in the under trees and hot area.

Hopefully this will be filled with sunflowers, calendula and marigolds Smiley

Last years rock garden-pretty good for a one year old garden!

front cottage garden with 2 columnar apple trees

Peas(3 kinds) and brussels sprouts( I like the way they look in a garden)

Cottage flowers and put together bird bath planter

herb garden

tiny corn, huge cabbages and squash and beans (a 3 sisters garden) And a cherry tree with a dozen cherries this year!!

Lettuce bed-the broccolli raab is being replaced with eggplants

A drawerful of microgreens

I finally got clematis to bloom-it's with a David Austin Rose on the edge of the soon to be salsa garden

Strawberries and sage
Sorry if it's too many pics. Lat year we ate entirely out of the garden for all veggies other than potatoes for a family of four.We have green beans, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, leeks, salad greens, cabbage, brussels sprouts, basil, corn, pumpkins and melons all in a city back yard! I hope that's not bragging Wink

I received my third card today-WOOO. I desperately need to get a better camera, but I'll post what I can. If you sent me a card and have a better pic-please post them Smiley The true designs don't show well here. They are S for Sphinx/Sasquatch/Sun and Sand-a beautiful acrylic ink on watercolour paper by Minouette (she sent it in a linoleum printed butterfly card),T for Tiki, an ink (sharpie?) and collage card-very trendy cool, from Radegund and a fun U-is for Umbrella made of foam, paper and paperclip by CLarinetcutie. They're all really different and amazing!

This is the super big Quiet suncatcher

A great altered book clutch

An "original by Brenna" (you should check out her other paintings on Craftster-they're tres cool!)
here's the link to another of her paintings
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=173590.0

An altered painted collaged cigar box with 2 Where the Wild Things Are domino necklaces

Another view of the box. She also gave me a ring and a cuff which are being worn!!
Thanks again, Brenna!

89  Re: Altoid Tin Theme Swap Round 5 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by balkandina on: June 01, 2007 11:34:47 AM
I received a fabulous travel themed tin from Gougeaway. I love to travel, so it is very appropriate for my art collection. She included all sorts of little paper tags I can use in my collaging, tiny round clips, a bird pin and a glass and silver charm. It's just terrific. I will post a pic from my not very good camera (note to self: get a better camera), but I hope that Gougeaway took pics, too and can post .

I'm going to add my bad camera picture just so you can see the fabulous stuff Ashestoashes put in my beautiful tin

She used my Isadora Duncan Theme. The tin came wrapped in my favorite shade of green fabric and is decoupaged in green. It has Isadora quotations, 2 cool magnets, a BEAUTIFUL silver wire and green bead bracelet, a hand felted flower and cute little garden stickers(gardening was another theme) It is absolutely lovely. Thank you so much , Jennifer, I love it. I will put it in a place of honor. And my daughter is already eying the bracelet Grin

Also-she says that this is her first needle felting-it's just perfect. I'm going to use it as a pin
