1  Re: Embroidery Hoopla Rnd 5 - Color Spectrum Gallery!! (Send 6/6/11) in The Swap Gallery by paper rose on: June 12, 2011 10:58:57 PM
I present to you...one of the greatest things ever:

Rosyposie combined my love of foxes, natural history, and dinosaurs to make this AMAZING hoop, titled "Hole Sweet Hole." I. Love. It.

The dino:

The adorable foxes (the little one is about the size of a quarter):

I can't get over its awesomeness. All the little details are amazing. Thanks again, rosyposie! Smiley

2  Adventures in Satin Stitching *Now with pattern* in Needlework: Completed Projects by paper rose on: April 12, 2011 08:01:47 AM
My first foray into satin stitching occurred when I made my "elephants on trapezes" hoops for the Hoopla Diptych Swap. I decided that I wanted more practice, so I whipped up a little doodle and got to work:

I used silver thread for the glint in her eyes:

I know it's not perfect, but it was fun to make!

Here's the sketch I used--feel free to use it! I'd love to see your results.

Here's what ChrissyCrafts sent me! I love how the knotted birdcage makes it seem kind of like it's vanishing. Very cool. And I love the swallow (I put my interest in Sailor Jerry-style tattoo art in my questionnaire). Bonus: I can make the bird look like it's flying away from the cat portrait that I received in the last Hoopla swap I participated in! Smiley

Since my swap partner's life is chaotic right now, I'm posting what I sent her. ChrissyCrafts mentioned a love for circus themes and cute things, so I combined them:

5  Matryoshka Luggage Tag in Sublime Stitching Embroidery by paper rose on: February 01, 2011 12:12:42 PM

I really like the way this came out! It's just a piece of cotton calico, folded over and reinforced with light interfacing, and whipstitched. On the back, I sewed on one of those plastic pockets that hold photos in wallets, which will contain my contact info.

My firsts for this project: French knots, thread blending, and that thing where I made the swirly pattern on her bow (no idea what that's called, if anything). I used Jenny's tutorial for French knots, and thought that they were a breeze!

6  Skeleton Cameo Embroidery in Needlework: Completed Projects by paper rose on: November 10, 2010 01:42:54 PM
I made this for Faux_Valentine for the Hoopla Swap (#2), and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

How I made it: I printed off an image of a skeleton cameo, poked holes every few millimeters along the image's outline, and rubbed chalk over the holes to transfer the image onto black quilter's fabric. Then I used 2 strands of pale pink embroidery floss and backstitched the whole thing. I painted a wooden hoop with white pearlescent acrylic paint, so that it has a lovely silver shimmer to it. Voila! Now I just need to make one for myself. Smiley

7  Re: Embroidery Hoopla Round 2 Gallery! (SendOut 11/15/10) in The Swap Gallery by paper rose on: November 05, 2010 02:40:36 PM
I received the most touching and beautiful hoop from Faux_Valentine:

And here, already in a place of honor on the wall (please excuse the crappy lighting--the colors in the first photo are accurate):

The backstory: Faux_Valentine discovered that we recently had to put down our beloved cat due to cancer. She captured his beauty soooo well (including his crossed eyes)! I get tears in my eyes every time I look at it (in a good way).
Thank you so much!!!

8  North Star Embroidery in Needlework: Completed Projects by paper rose on: August 23, 2010 01:22:48 PM
I made this simple gift for a good friend who was moving to another town. We are backpackers, and there's a way to find the North Star by using the Little and Big Dipper. The meaning behind this embroidery, then, is that he would never be lost, even when he's far away from home.

Close-up of the metallic thread:

(p.s. The dimensions are a little wonky, I know. Smiley)

9  Re: One Tiny Sea Creature in The Swap Gallery by paper rose on: June 06, 2010 05:40:30 PM
Dude. Ninetyninety sent me the sweetest pendant EVAR! I mentioned that I love illustrations of crazy sea creatures from old maps, and this is what she made for me:

It's from a map by Sir Francis Drake, of modern-day Cartagena, Colombia (Drake raided it in 1585). It's a little under 2 inches x 2 inches.

She also made this sweet envelope (featuring sketches by crew from the Dutch East India Company):

I love it so much! And I love that she sent me some info about the images, too. Thank you!!

10  Re: 44 Cent Swap Rd 3 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by paper rose on: October 09, 2009 06:08:35 PM
I got the most awesome envelope from calluna! I mentioned that I love Halloween and bookish things, and this is what she sent me:

She made the envelope out of a beautiful piece of scrapbooking paper! How brilliant is that?
Embroidery floss in my favorite color, one of my favorite vintage Halloween illustrations, awesome international stamps, a poem...

Some amazing, slightly translucent old advertisements, book-themed illustrations...

A Lotteria card! I almost bought a pack of these the other day! Pretty bookmarks. The circle and oval are a pale blue/silvery color that shines when light hits them...

A cool sardines label, cantaloupe ad, and very delicate paper within which lie fibers...

Neat photograph, illustrations, and textured cardstock...

And a perfume ad, and more literary-themed clippings!

Mars approves of this package.

AND, she fit all of this into a 44 cent envelope! I'm so lucky! Looking through the contents of my envelope felt like Christmas. Thanks again, calluna!
