272  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Re: Very lame question regarding my machin on: February 06, 2006 07:14:39 AM
this is totally not a lame question at all. if i understand you correctly, i've had a really similar problem a few times. try threading the bobbin EXACTLY the way the manual tells you to do it ... i started threading my new machine in the same way i had threaded my old one, without reading the manual and it just would NOT work properly. instead of stitching, it would make these giant stupid thread loops on the bottom which would then get caught in the bobbin, seize up the machine, and leave me screaming expletives.

the other thing that has solved the problem for me in the past is making sure that your needle size, thread weight, tension and fabric are all coordinated. so like, if you're sewing wicked heavy fabric, you need a monster needle, heavier thread and a tighter tension, whereas for silk, you need lighter thread, smaller needle, and so forth. it'll have a chart in the manual, or you can just google it and find what you need.

finally, i've also found that sometimes, my machine just doesn't like a certain sized spool of thread. it just will not use without doing the giant stupid loop thing.

i have never taken any sewing lessons, so all of this may be exclusive to my own sewing incompetence - but it sounds like we had similar problems.
if it's not, i guess i'm just rambling publicly about how i'm too spastic to sew.

good luck!

strangela, i totally have a knitting needle stab story too (and apparently i'm just as excited about it).

before i say what it is, a warning - if you're squeamush STOP READING.

i'm an idiot and left my knitting on the floor once. I jumped up to answer the phone, forgot my kntting needles were on the ground, and half-stepped on them -  so hard that a needle stabbed me in between the big toe and the second toe. the worst part was it was so deep i had to PULL THE NEEDLE out, it was so gross and hurt like a mofo. plus, how do you put a bandaid between two toes?

i've only ever sold like two items, but you would've thought i'd won the lottery when i sold the first one. i was so excited!!! i find it  so amazing to think someone else would want to buy something i put my heart into making - which is silly, because i love buying things other people have made.
