1  ASIA / Japan / Thrift stores, craft stores - Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo? on: October 16, 2006 10:43:38 PM
Hi all,

I'm going to be in Kyoto for my Spring quarter (that's next year, April-June or so), and then in one of the three topic-listed cities for the rest of the summer.  When I was last in Kyoto, I had a really hard time finding any sort of list whatsoever of where to find Thrift/Recycle shops, and my only way of finding them was to be highly vigilant on my bus rides - not ideal, since they hardly cover any territory.

So, if you know of any thrift stores in any of the three cities, can you pleeeease give me the name and address?  In English or Japanese, it doesn't matter to me.  Smiley

Also, if you know of any especially good/cheap/awesome craft/fabric/etc stores, I would also love to know about them.

2  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / Switchplate "cover" on: October 16, 2006 10:37:41 PM
So, I was bored, and I had magazines at my disposal, and my dorm room is really boring, so I decided to do something about my boring switchplate.  I couldn't actually alter it permanently, at least not without buying an extra one, and I didn't feel like going out, but then I found the perfect image, so it didn't matter.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with my switchplate:

3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Mother's Day / My mother is so incredibly impossible. on: May 02, 2006 09:30:57 PM
I need a mother's day gift idea, but by this Sunday, which is a week early, because we're celebrating early.  My mom is in her 50s.  She likes... um... cats... and cleaning things...

Seriously, my mom is so impossible when it comes to gifts, and she will never give me any ideas that aren't really pathetic.  Last time I asked her, she said "new dinner bowls from Longs".  I refuse to buy my mother dinner bowls (they were boring looking, and I wouldn't be able to make her cool dinner bowls, for the record.)

Cry.  Help.  Please.
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Work-appropriate clothes? on: May 02, 2006 05:08:00 PM
Hey everyone.

So, I just got my first real job in which I actually have to attire myself nicely, which starts in mid-June.

The problem?  I am, at heart, a jeans and tshirts girl.  If I have skirts, they're almost all minis, and I can't wear those to work!  I would really like to avoid spending a lot of money to get a wearable work wardrobe.

My dress code is basically medium or long skirts or nice pants (nice capris should also be okay, I believe) for the bottom, and dressy shirts or polos for the top.

I have tons of fabric that I got from a gal off of craigslist for free, but the thing I don't really have is TIME!  School is going to be a fulltime job for me right up until the time my summer job starts, so if I'm going to make myslef some clothes, they need to be EASY stuff!

Do people have some suggestions for me?  They'd be really appreciated.

I have a pretty good source of a lot of polo shirts that I will probably resize to flatter me more (they're kinda big, from an old boyfriend or from my dad's work), so I'm a big more worried about the bottom right now, and ideally I'd like to have more skirts because it is HOT in the summer here.
