I bought some from http://www.colonialpatterns.com/ (featured on the craftster blog a little while ago) and the quality is fantastic.

McCall's patterns really drive me up the wall sometimes.  I'm working on a dress right now, and I think there was actually a mistake in the instructions.  Thankfully, it was an easy enough pattern that I've been able to figure everything out, but I think I'm fed up with them as well.

You can sew a piece of fabric the same size as the towel to the back and make it reversible.  That's what I do sometimes to make things a bit more sturdy.
