Hey so you got some FO's or prototypes or experiments sitting around? What about TOO MUCH YARN? FABRIC overload getting you down? Let's declutter! No junk of course! But maybe we could combine a crafted and supply swap and call it decluttering (or in my house it's called making room for more yarn! Grin)
Waddiya think?

So, I'm new and I would love to compile a thread of vocabulary so I can know what the heck you guys are talking about!!!

Ok, so I know:
Wool: comes from sheep
Mohair: comes from goats
Spindle: hand held spinning aparatus
Spinning wheel: fiber spinning machine, usually foot powered
Bobbin: the thing that gathers the spinning yarn
Singles: a single strand of spun fiber
Doubles: two strands of singles plyed together

I would love to know what you know!

8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Java's very first fiber friday! 2/22 on: February 22, 2008 04:39:40 PM
Woot! I got my wheel (Ashford Elizabeth) for 75$ two wednedays ago... the first yarn to come off my wheel is this hand dyed wool (Not dyed by me, but by the gal who sold me the wheel!):

I set the twist with some nifty help from you guys here, this is only singles...

Here's my next batch. I got this big bag of goodies from my neighbor (who's double car garage is full of fiber!), this is an experiemnt in dyeing (of hers) with mohair and silk (and some other wool that has a special name that I forgot!)
Anyway, it was tricky to say the least. All those fibers and their different [insert vocab word] fiber length! ACK! Anyway, I plied some and kept some singles:

Here it is plied:

Thanks for looking! Can you tell I'm stoked!?!?!?!
9  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / mixing fibers on: February 11, 2008 10:02:54 AM
Ok, so I got my wheel last Wednesday, and my freaking awesome neighbor hooked me up with all sorts of fibers...
She gave me some silk and mohair that she was going to mix (or whatever that is called) that she kinda  botched the dye job on... and I tried mixing it, but it seems there must be a trick I don't know... its like the mohair is short fiber and the silk is long fiber and the silk is slippery and the mohair slides off sorta... do you mix the two in one hand like a pre draft, or do you have them separated in your hand and just have one on the left and one on the right side and sort of draft them at separate intervals, like multi tasking the two fiber in your hands... help!!!

(neighbor is always busy so it is hard to have her show me... and you guys are so awesome at explaining...)
10  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / HI! I'm venturing into fiber land.... on: February 07, 2008 10:27:55 AM
Ok gals,
I just brought home a garage sale find... a new wheel!!!

There are no markings on this wheel (photo to come) but I think it is in pretty good shape. My friend that found it for me knows a bunch about spinning and stuff, but she's not here right now and I have questions!!!!

So, I know where the yarn is supposed to feed from my hands to the spinny-winder part. I know where the pedal is and how to use it. Is that all I need to know to get started. Just pedal and draft? Then when the winder thingy gets full I'll have more questions, but I really really really want to get started and I want to make sure I don't get immediately frustrated. Smiley
