11  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Lemon scented soda can tart melts on: October 15, 2008 01:41:53 PM
Since I'm not currently working (doing the whole college thing) I've been searching for ways to make most of my Xmas gifts for as cheaply as possible without looking like I skimped.  Here are some tart melts that I just made for my mother, the candle freak, as part of her gift.

I melted the wax in a metal bowl placed in a pot of boiling water.  I scented the wax by adding lemon extract (I didn't measure just went by smell) and added a yellow crayon for color.  Then used a ladle to pour the wax into the hollow of an upside down soda can.  I had to pull the tabs off in order for them to stand straight.

When they're dry they slip out with a little pressure, but if you're afraid of scratching them, they will pop out nicely if you slip a butter knife into the can opening and press against the bottom.  I was really proud of this even though it's so simple.  Hope you like 'em!  Better yet, I hope she does...
12  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / $13 Anchor(wo)man Ron Burgundy Costume on: October 14, 2008 04:41:39 PM
I will admit I am a tad bit obsessed with Will Ferrell  Cheesy  So for Halloween two years ago I decided to dress as Ron Burgundy, rather than some cliche costume that you've seen a million times before.  I didn't want to spend too much so I went to the Salvation Army and found a maroon suit and blue striped tie for under $12.  I found the microphone at Spencers the day before Halloween marked down to 99 cents and everything else I had in my closet.  Well, except for the poorly matched mustash which my best friend provided after I couldn't find one to match for the life of me--I even attempted to make on out of a lock of the wig but that plan failed miserably.  The wig was actually a mullet that I'd used the year before, with the length tucked and pinned up.

Me and my "Baxter" for the evening:

And my best Ron Burgundy stare:

My fiance still has trouble looking at these!  He claims I shouldn't be able to pull off being a dude so well Cheesy  I guess that means I did a good job!
13  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Stenciled Tee for Pervert Sailor on: October 14, 2008 11:15:05 AM
While my fiance was still in the Navy and we were just dating, I was traveling down to visit him in VA every few months for a couple of weeks at a time.  Since I didn't want his roommates to start resenting my frequent house invasions, I started bringing them gifts each time I came.  I looked at it as a way of saying, "Thanks for putting up with me" Grin  This was a tee I made for Jason, his roommate that had/has an obsession with teenage girls.  Dirty old Sailor, I know.

I used the good old freezer paper stencil method for my technique and used several coats of each paint color.  The red was the most troublesome paint, since it took MANY coats until it appeared opaque but I was happy with the finished project.
14  COOKING / Dessert / Fire Breathing Dragon Birthday Cake on: October 12, 2008 09:07:37 AM
This is my first post so constructive criticism is more than welcome!  I made this cake for my fiancé's best friend's birthday back in August by following a recipe I found on instructables.com.  The only thing that didn't turn out right was the frosting color--he's a big Cubs fan so I was going for a deep blue, but after using an entire bottle of food coloring it was still too pale:/

They thought it came out so nicely that it took them 3 days to cut into it!
