1  Illinois / Illinois: North / Re: Cool Chicago Crafter Peeps wanna get together? on: September 17, 2007 04:44:04 PM
I just moved to Chicago and was hoping to find some kind of crafty meet-up to help get me out of my little bubble Smiley I went to one a couple times in Providence, where I just moved from, but at that point, I wasn't as mobile with my crafting, so I didn't keep with it. I think its fun to see what other people are working on, and it's good to get out of the apartment. If anyone else would be interested, let me know Smiley
2  UNITED STATES / Rhode Island / RI area Artist/Crafty Businessperson to talk to high schoolers on: June 19, 2006 12:23:54 PM
Hi all,
This summer I will be running a summer program for a group of high schoolers called "Artrepreneurs." In the program the students learn how to make their own stencils and then decorate, market and sell their products. Because the kids will be running their own art-based business, they learn creative as well as business and marketing skills. I ran the same program last year, and this summer we're going to expand somewhat and one of the things I would like to add is to have a crafty businessperson or artist who is familiar with selling their work come and speak to the students about the business side of being a working artist-- it'd be pretty informal, I just want the students to be able to ask questions and get some advice from someone with experience in the business side of the art world. The dates would be flexible-- the program runs Tuesday and Thursday evenings in July and August from 4:30-6:30 in Pawtucket, RI, and I was thinking sometime in last July would be best, but I'd be willing to plan around your schedule. If you've got questions or think you might be interested, drop me an email at [email protected]. Thanks so much!

4  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / HELP-- Knitty Yorick Scarf on: December 13, 2005 01:13:19 PM
Help! So I want to make this:

for my brother for Xmas, but when I started looking more closely at the pattern today, I got all confused. Has anyone made this? I'm a little baffled by a couple of the techniques, like what's the difference between yarn over and slip a stitch? And what about knitting through the back of a loop-- isn't that purling? Any help would be much appreciated!!

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Brother's Women's Studies-Major Girlfriend on: November 23, 2005 12:24:37 PM
So I need a gift for my brother's girlfriend. She's awesome, and I was originally thinking of getting her one of these from stitchpixie.com:

this: http://members.shaw.ca/stitchpixie/may28/4.jpg
or this: http://members.shaw.ca/stitchpixie/may3/20.jpg

They're really perfect, but honestly, more than I can spend. So, does anyone have ideas of something in this vein (pro-women/sexuality type stuff) that I could buy? I like that it's handmade, but I just can't afford $25 total for just one person!

8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Re: How's Your etsy Shop Doing? on: October 24, 2005 11:58:25 AM
I'm just saying, I seriously don't think there should be penises in the toy department. Art, yes. Ceramics, yes. ...
Nothing against the sellers, just the placement of the item.

And feedback. I think it should be way easier to leave a person some feedback, like a visible link to leaving feedback rather than all the hunting a person has to do.

I have to agree with this-- I think the "Little Head" is hilarious and adorable, but it's not really a toy.

Are you guys advertising in anyway? I tell almost everyone I met, kids in my classes, I've posted to livejournal....

I'm trying to feel out where I want my shop to go and how/how much to advertise. I'm debated about doing things like the Sampler and printing up business cards, but I still feel pretty new and don't want to jump in too quickly. I've linked my etsy shop to my livejournal and put something on my myspace account, but that's about it. If anyone else has ideas, I'd love to hear them, too!
