1  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Silly Santa White Elephant Swap signups/craft due 12/19 on: November 26, 2007 10:34:01 AM
I started crafting last night Smiley
Like many though, I'm definitely lacking self confidence.
What if no one likes it? What if it's not big enough?

I'm totally looking forward to the swapping to begin though.  Grin
2  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Winter Postcard Swap ( Sign Ups Nov 20-27, Send Out Dec 7 ) on: November 25, 2007 07:49:24 PM
I wasn't going to join this since I'm already making 20 postcards for Post Secret 2, but I'm having so much fun making them, I figured "what's a few more?"  Grin

I love making post cards and getting mail
3  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Paper Roses, with a very detailed (and pic obese) tutorial. Pics fixed. on: November 15, 2007 11:11:04 AM
These are great!
I work at a coffee shop so I've been saving the used filters to make these with.

My co-workers think I'm nuts for washing off and saving old filters!   Cheesy

I'm glad you enjoyed your goodies, trillian!
I'll post a better pic tomorrow as soon as I find my camera cable.

travelbug's package arrived today, but it's still at the post office until I can pick it up tomorrow  Tongue This is worse than waiting for it- knowing it's here, but being unable to open it!
5  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: Spinning in public :) on: November 12, 2007 05:44:01 AM
(woo purse-sied drop spindle!)

lol, the last purse I bought, I bought to fit my spindle rather than trying to find a spindle I liked to fit in my purse Smiley

Also, many people seem to think my spindle is some sort of top- the old fashioned kind where you pull the string to spin it.  Cheesy
6  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: a couple of questions for you spinners on: November 04, 2007 03:48:58 PM
I spin both on drop spindles and spinning wheels.
I have a turkish drop spindle from Ashford which I don't like too much, and a top whorl drop spindle with inlaid glass that I love- I think because it is significantly heavier than the turkish and I think it is easier to spin on.
For wheels I have an Ashford Kiwi as my main wheel and I do the majority of my spinning on this. I also have a Country Craftsman that a co-worker gave me but I don't spin on it often since I only have one bobbin.

As for dying wool, you can do it before or after, but sometimes the dying process felts the wool slightly and you'll have to pre-draft it more to open the fibers back up again. Still not too hard to spin, but some added prep time.

How many yards you can fit on a drop spindle varies depending on the size of the spindle and how thick/thin you spin the yarn.

As for tips- try spinning everything you can get your hands on to see what you like and dislike. For me a lot of the fun comes with seeing how many different things I've spun. Last week I spun a silk cap (hated it), bamboo (LOVED it!), merino (my classic stand-by), and Ingeo (corn fiber- hated it.) For this swaps are great because you can swap small amounts of fibers Smiley
Also, if you're considering a wheel, find a fiber guild or shop and try several different wheels before committing a large chunk of money to one. I had though I might like an Ashford Traditional, but I tried spinning on one before I bought it and discovered that I hate it! Also when buying wheels, keep in mind that you're going to want several bobbins- a minimum of 3 for plying- and that ups the cost. I've got 8 and counting for my Kiwi.

Good luck and Have fun!!

I wasn't sure at first if I was looking at a doll or a human. Beautiful work and photography!
